If the youngins needed room to spread their wings, it may have become obvious to him there was a ceiling on his Laker career. This was bound to happen at some point, so the timing isn't very meaningful to me personally. Our roster is set for a couple of years, but hopefully the rest of the crew can keep the G-League well stocked with talent.
If you are Ballmer, and you like to play dirty, that's a hire he HAS to make. What better way to attach a foe than to hire someone that knows their inner workings? Jerry is pretty far removed from the operation, but Ryan is fresh meat. So while the younger Buss' may have been growing into increased roles, it doesn't mean Ryan won't feel underappreciated and let a few beans spill here or there.

This is a stupid or at least very questionable move by the organization. If AEG people are telling you that kind of stuff yeah it really sounds weird and why would the Lakers do that? Is there a chance to get the real story and scoop the inevitable articles by reporters covering the Lakers that will be out in a day or matter of days?
to what position? If the people above you aren't going anywhere, or ones that left aren't being replaced, then there's nowhere to go. Magic mentioned grooming the Buss kids to eventually take over.
It wasn't just targeted at Ryan West, but rather anyone who posed a "threat" to rising in the FO. Same pushback is being given to the younger Buss brothers too. Kurt Rambis is heavily "guarding" upper management right now, and is effectively functioning as President of Basketball Operations. Rob Pelinka indirectly answers to him.

Why would any successful organization stunt the growth of any of its up and coming executives? If it's coming from someone outside of the Buss family I'd potentially buy that if other ownership partners were trying to loosen the grip of the Buss family on ownership, but it's not. I'd be curious why anyone would think that makes any sense at all unless they feel the younger Buss brothers are not qualified to move up any further. But to insert Kurt in that position just seems a bit odd. But if Linda is ok with this, Ima roll with it.
Cause he also has a HUGE f****** ego. Rob was talking behind his back about his annoying part time status and Mag blew a gasket and I bet wanted Jeanie to fire him, and she wouldn't. Not rocket science. The 2 things have nothing to do with one another.
But all while these same guys who heralded him are the same guys who said our draft picks basically sucked until we traded them and ONLY then they pointed out how we got fleeced and they are some of the best young talent in the league. Look everyone, don't believe anything the media says about the Lakers, at best they are chirping broken clocks who get lucky to get things right every once in awhile.
Mostly corporate politics. Those in positions of power don't want those who are more competent to usurp them. Magic, Kurt Rambis, etc all want to be in control.
Sorry, I don't buy that for a second. Magic wanted to be in control so bad he was never around. He was prepping Pelinka to take over, and he has his own empire. Being in control of others seemed to be low on his list of priorities. Did he want final say? Yes. And when he saw that wasn't happening, he called it a day. No biggie. But capping others' potential doesn't sound like the guy famous for raising the game of those around him. I don't know that anyone has enough information about Kurt to say he's concerned about others being more competent than he is. Most people do the best they can for the company they care about. Obviously as someone trusted and brought back into the Laker family to make good decisions, it would be really odd to try to keep your underlings frustrated and stagnant. This just sounds off to me for some reason.
