3 year, 40 mill contract for Rondo/Dragic. Thats it. Other than that, not a penny more and get a bargain price on Lin.

That technically leaves 32 million to spend, but with four players on the roster I believe we'd have 9 cap holds worth roughly half a million each so our cap space reduces to 27.5 million.

Then you add in the Houston pick we have which is roughly another half a million and we're at 27 million to spend.

If we get a top 5 pick you add probably another 2-4 million so our cap available to spend is actually more like 23-25 million and that's without Lin, Davis, Hill, or Boozer.

We have room for a max contract to a young player and then some flexibility. That's why I like Monroe and then target a wing.

Wed still get to decide who those cap holds are and get further bargains am I not correct? No point including the holds IMO, because we simply dont know if well sign 3-5 solid players plus reserves or go for 2 big ones and other reserves. ALONG with the picks because they can easily be traded away if thats fair to say.

AT THIS very moment. 32 million I believe in projected amount to actually spend.

No a hold must be accounted for. You CANNOT spend that money. We will not have 32 million to spend this summer. By my estimation we'll have at most 27 million to spend.

A cap hold is used so that your team is GUARANTEED to have 12-13 players on it. The cap hold is worth roughly 500,000 dollars because the team can fill itself out with minimum contracts after it's spent all it's other cash. They are glorified spot holders for your roster.

If we have 30 million in four guaranteed contracts, we're not allowed to spend every cent of the remaining 36 million. We are allowed to spend 31.5 million and the remaining 4.5 million MUST go to minimum contracts (assuming we've used any exceptions that we have).

In our case we've got 35 million in guaranteed deals if we waive our rights to Clarkson and Sacre, Hill expires, and Davis declines his option. That leaves 31 million in cap space (Kobe, Kelly, Randle, Young). The Houston pick will be guaranteed and will be worth probably near 1 million.

Now we're at 5 guaranteed contracts for 36 million which means we've got about 40 million on the books with cap holds.

That leaves 26 million to spend on available free agents. That's NOT counting Lin, Davis, Hill, our possible top 5 pick, Clarkson, or our possible 2nd Round Pick.

It isn't old for a Nowitzki, Nash or a Abdul Jabbar etc because their games aren't/weren't based on that type of athleticism that dwindles quickly @ 30+. Like I said earlier Rondo will still be able to dish @33 years old but offensively will he get to rim like he needs to to score? Will he move laterally with speed? He needs his athleticism. The other thing that's been mentioned repeatedly is his injury history. Athletic game + injury prone + over 30 isn't a great combo.

Thanks for explaining further. I got you, but if im not mistaken, you are basing it off of cap holds to say sign 1-2 BIG free agents only right? Say with Kobe, Young, Randle, Clarkson. Which is 4 players, 3 mill in cap holds which puts us up to 10 players if 6 players@500,000 and 29.5 million left over to than say sign your boys Monroe and Rondo. Which is 12 players total.

So im simply saying that "AVAILABLE" money might be a little different if we invest in several solid players and the rest are cap holds if that makes sense? For example the 4 original I mentioned above, than only 2 million in cap holds which puts us up to 8 players if 4 players@500,000 and 30.5 million to than sign 4 players to put us at 12 players.

    Is this correct?

Also, we could easily trade our first and second round picks, thats why IMO we shouldnt count them...Though if we get them, we should keep them and will account for give or take 5 million? That would give us an estimated 25.5 million left to spent on 2 players now. Davis will not exercise his contract at 1 million, if he does than somebody is paying him under the table and we would ALL be doing jumping jacks for joy if he came back at that rate lol.

At the end of the day nothing to argue about over 1-2 million and am definitely not trying to be the one "thats right".

I AM trying to be right, but only because I've been really looking into it the last couple of days, not because I want to argue. :D I'm going to type it out now so that others can read it and kind of see what it's all about and also because I need to type it out so I make sure I understand it well enough too. If there's any discrepancies I'd love to be corrected.

So the way it works is this:
Cap holds are there so that the team always has 12+1 people on it. The +1 is for an injured player, but for practical purposes the team needs 13 players on it at all times. Think of a cap hold as a shadow player. You've got your real, tangible players and their contracts and then you have enough shadow players to fill out your roster at 13 total. Visually you can look at it like this:
    1. Kobe
    2. Kelly
    3. Randle
    4. Young
    5. Cap Hold
    6. Cap Hold
    .
    .
    .
    13. Cap Hold

That means if we've got 4 players then we've got 9 cap holds worth 500,000 each working against us because we need a total of 13 players. If we've got only two players then we've got 11 cap holds working against us. If we've got 12 players then we've got only one cap hold.

So in our case we've got Kobe, Kelly, Randle, and Young all with guaranteed deals that total roughly 35 million dollars. The nine cap holds that come with that total about 4.5 million. Therefore our true cap is 39.5 million dollars.

Since you don't want to count the picks, which is totally reasonable, then we're looking at about 26.5 million to spend. That limits what we all thought we'd have by a bit. A max contract to Rondo now seems pretty unlikely to me unless they think they've got a lock on someone really valuable who will sign for only 5.5 million.

That makes guys like Monroe and Gasol more valuable because starting next summer their max contract will start at 16.5 million instead of the nearly 20 million it'd cost for Love or Rondo.

If we got Monroe or Gasol, then we'd have enough cash left over to either keep the guys we want or spend for another piece like Luol Deng or Wesley Mathews who will likely command near 10 million dollar deals.

Does anyone really believe that K Love rumor? I mean if it's true should the Lakers go all out on him using most of their cap space on him? That would leave Randall on the bench, and still no center of point guard ....

Randle will come off the bench next year anyway. He was suppose to work his way past Boozer this year, which in this case, would've been very soon, but just not the case with his injury. Love is a perimeter oriented PF anyway, and Julius is versatile PF with an inside game, I could see them working off each other.

I'm still not on the "needing an elite PG" train to be successful. Hasn't proved the formula yet outside of the Spurs, who have arguably the best PF to ever play.

We already have the perimeter set, we need bigs, whether it's Love or Marc. Love is from LA, he could have a "Lebron coming home" type moment, who knows.

Randle and Love(were talking as IF he signs) will not be on the floor together unless we go with a really small line up,Randle at PF,Love at C. Other than that it doesnt workout.

BTW-Love is originally from Oregon BUT he chose to attend UCLA for a reason ;) You would think he really loves LA, would probably LOVE to play with Kobe as well ;)

Just for myself and everyone out there to be clear though, TECHNICALLY those cap holds put us at 13 players. Say though if we sign two decent heavy contract guys on top of those "9 cap holds"(and puts us at NBA minimum salary), than we can shave off a million(2 of those cap holds @500k) since wed be at at 13 players.

Is still correct? So it in all sense it pretty much comes down to how many guys we sign @whatever salary, BEFORE filling out rest of roster with cap holds?

For example. If we have Kobe,Randle,Young,Kelly,SAY Rondo and Monroe, than wed ACTUALLY HAVE TO account 3.5 mill to 7 cap holds to put us at 13 players(7x500k).

    Yes.

So if we have 4 guys we need 9 cap holds. If we add another 2 and have a total of 6 then we have 7 cap holds. BUT in order to figure out how much space we actually have, you have to keep in mind those cap holds.

For instance, we CANNOT spend all of our available cap on a free agent. We can only spend up to a certain amount because we MUST fill our roster out with minimum contracts.

    Example:
We have a total of 31 million dollars in cap space NOT counting our cap holds. We CANNOT spend that 31 million between two players. We can only spend UP TO the amount of money it would take to fill out our roster with minimum contracts. Does that make sense?

If we have 31 million available we can't split that between Rondo and Monroe. We can only spend 26 million before we HAVE to sign guys to minimum contracts. So in order to get Monroe and Rondo, they'd have to split 26 million and not 31 million.

If we split it and give each of them 13 million dollar contracts, then we have six players total and our cap situation looks like this:
Kobe, Monroe, Rondo, Randle, Kelly, and Young: 61 million.

PLUS 3.5 million in cap holds= 64.5 million dollars.

We'd have another 1.5 million to spend before we have to use minimum contracts to fill out the roster.

No Love at PF, Randle at SF. Go BIG. Davis at C.

    Davis
    Love
    Randle
    Kobe
    Lin

See, I literally almost typed a scenario like that but then I feel the "SF" has to be able to knock down a 3, we dont even know if Julius can consistently knock down a 20FT jumper and if hes able to guard the opposing teams SF(Though I think he can).

If on offense you have Love being more of a wing player and Randle playing down low, than youre taking away one of Loves strengths which is his post up game.

Love is a better shooter than he is a post up player, albeit, Love is an excellent offensive rebounder and finisher. Whereas Randle is more adept to the midpost.

I mean, it's good to have options though right?

I do agree with your points, I just think if Love does come.. hes not going to want to adapt his game to say be able to bring Randle on the floor. Because do you really want to also pay someone MAX money to be our outside shooter? Just wouldnt make sense.

If he does come I do want him to be the KG of our team, all while still being able to knock down the 3.

EDIT: I think IF once again, Love does leave CLE(Which one of the reasons could be for the simple fact that hes forced to play away from the basket a lot of the times), Randle gets traded.

Well, his role isn't necessarily going to just be a spot up shooter.

He's going to be the second option hands down. I'm just saying that his ability to shoot the 3 really provides him with more options with a pick and roll with Kobe. He's going to get the looks because he'll get the respect from Kobe.

RIght now, no one on this team has that respect from Kobe, that's why he's taking 30 shots a game. Conversely, on the Cavs, there are too man hands on the ball. Kyrie, Lebron, Love. And between Lebron and Kyrie, they are the primary ball handlers, so they're going to initiate a lot of the offense.

If we trade Randle, it must be for a star. Sign and trade Marc Gasol? Or something.

Before this Cleveland thing blew up, Love said that one of the adjustments starting the game from the outside. He likes to work inside and then start hitting jumpers. Now, it's kind of the opposite for him where he has to step outside and then occasionally move inside.

Back when we had Odom/Gasol/Bynum (my goodness, we were so spoiled), we used to go inside early with our bigs so Love wouldn't have that problem. Kobe is great at getting the balls to our bigs.

I'm glad LBJ is getting some of this stuff that Kobe usually gets. Now Love and Bosh don't want to play with him.
