Christie reminds me of Crazy Eyes Brown so far, 0–5 shooting, wide open and everything short. He’s going to need time for sure. Jay Huff is looking great this game, I’d imagine he will get a camp invite.
Man poor Christie has had a terrible game. Hasn’t made a shot, been ripped multiple times, just got dunked on hard, he’s raw. Also Shareef is not an NBA player, I just don’t see what he brings, he’s too small for the skill set he displays, moves very awkwardly. Swider has a great shooting stroke, pure, but he’s not athletic so that’s about it, still, 3-4 on threes, 5-6 overall for 13 points.
Yes. Wondering how many 3s he made in college that were contested? Huff looked good. Want to see more of him. Christie struggled with his shot looked like he was pressing. Had some nice defensive moments and looked sound for the most part. I also think had 9 rebounds. Could be mistaken. This squad is fun most importantly!
Swider has a quick release and smooth mechanics. I hope we hold on to him. Also liked what I saw from Pippen Jr.
seen first half. so far: we brought bouyea in and chose pippen? whoops. he's better than pippen or mcclung, and the latter two aren't sniffing the nba this year (bouyea's iffy). i like vitto brown more than paris bass. need to see second half to see if i'm missing something there. huff is a man among boys, as it should be. i'd offer him a two-way now if we have one. if walker kessler's a first rounder, huff's a lotto pick. mason jones should be kicking these dudes's a****, and he...is not. swider looks really slow. and steve novak was bigger and a better shooter and still never really found a place in the league. can't imagine how a team expects to defend with swider on the floor. jovic also looks too slow to me. he better have some serious wizardry and hoop iq to be that thin and slow. christie took two s***ty midrangers that he shouldn't have, and that rattled him on offense, imo. pressing for sure. his missed three looked good, as did his missed floater, and he can get those shots in the nba at his size. someone said jeremy lamb about him, and i see that a little bit. moved his feet well on defense a couple times and was otherwise invisible. not ready for prime time. should be a two-way and not take a roster spot based on 9 minutes of INTENSE observation. i'll revise after the second half as necessary.
A lot of nice improved and new talent. Huff should be moved up to varsity for more depth behind and as a nice complement to Jones. Looking stronger and keep it up all summer in the weight room. Has skills and is tall and coordinated and has improved. McClung’s been working too. Athleticism and coordination. That slo mo sequence at the end of the 3rd quarter coming at the ground level camera under the basket, with Mac’s sprint with the ball down toward you, then stop on a dime, leap sideways for separation and then elevate like he does to bury the long nice form jumper he has was awesome. Christie looks like a nice player. Swider great size and if they can strengthen his big PF frame up …. that is a beautiful stroke he sunk 4 or 5 shots with. Paris is big with skills. Scottie Jr looks physically ready and to be a potentially nice player. And I’ll go out on a limb here and say other teams in a couple years will be sorry they passed on Shareef O’Neal. That frame of his (arms already looking strong) and the strength he’ll add to go with his athletic coordination and nice set of skills he has already including his away from the basket face up and touch from outside. If he had’t had two major challenges physically after HS with the serious enough condition, whatever it was, to require heart surgery and the other half season at LSU lost to the stress fracture in the foot …. he might well have been a lottery pick this year. I’m thrilled we have him. Mobile on the perimeter with shooting skills and strong 6’10 or maybe 6’11” frame …. he’s only in his Bambi stage now and already is not a skinny tall kid coming out. I bet by mid season he’s going to be causing some raised eyes and excitement for South Bay. Fun squad. Looked a lot less ragged than last year’s SL team did the first game, certainly on offense. McClung and Pippen for guards plus Mason doesn’t suck for them and their wings and their size …. plus Huff and O’Neal.
Bunch of raw development kids not ready for the Big Squad except for: Huff- showed good mechanics on his three and could maybe be a backup Center by mid season if he keeps developing throughout the year. Bass- he can be of use now off the bench and maybe could learn to be a good defender with that length. The Kids: Swider has a sweet stroke, but I think he’ll need a least a year with South Bay. McClung- I want to like and has improved, but he’s so small and we don’t have the roster to hide him on D. Christie- I need to see more of him. He had a rough shooting night and was pressing. Pippin- Good ball control and can get his shot up. I’m just not a fan of small players, so we’ll see how his development goes. Oh yeah, I forgot to add Shareef because I need to see much more of him before I can formulate an opinion.
Christie looked good on the glass. Mechanics on the J looks solid but you would've hit something by accident. Law of averages. Not ready. Huff was a man against boys. Often looked like the best player on the court. He's a. NBA'er. If we whiff on Bryant, Boogie and nothing comes back in a trade, I'd give him a non guaranteed deal. Pip had a few nice moves. He knows how to get to spots. Not great a night as a PG but there's no chemistry out there, obviously. Need to see more. Swider is the best shooter on our roster. Take from that what you will. Looks a little stiff and is a very upright player, but that J is butter.
Handy's goal for the crew yesterday Anchored by Huff and Christie Swider and Handy talking about Christie's D (and that Doug comp again) Swider admits to turning down shots and says he's more than a catch and shoot-er https://www.nba.com/lakers/news/lakers-open-summer-league-in-style-220702
Yeah, it hurts him defensively. Was a concern in college. I think he needs to be used as a help defender. Teams will target him, though. But he does have a legit NBA pro-skill.
his athleticism concerns me greatly. again, i just see steve novak out there. and novak bounced around the league for a few years because he was a tall lights-out shooter, but we've seen duncan robinson (an even better shooter and off the sprint) get just played off the floor by nba offenses in the last 18 months. i'd like to see him against the big boys to get a clearer picture. really like to see huff with the varsity in the preseason to see if he's made as many strides as it appears. he looks stronger/more balanced out there and can still do all the stuff that made him interesting last year.
