lol, prince couldn't stay in kobe's zip code. detroit got to play zone before it was legal, else he'd have been in the same smoldering pile of bodies as every other guy who played kobe in isolation.

and i wonder if there are data on this available, but i don't recall kobe having sweetspots, really. he scored everywhere on anyone. you had to send multiples or lose. it wasn't as easy as keeping him off a spot. if it was, he wouldn't have been what he was, imo.

Lonnie is not minimum, Nunn is not minimum.....they are 11.7 million. The guaranteed minimums are over 10 million. Added to AD and THT it's 70 million. Either Kyrie/Harris or Buddy/Turner or Westbrook brings that total to the cap, or in Buddy/Turner's case, close enough.
Lebron will certainly resign but IF he were to forego a salary entirely we'd still have nothing or very little. He's not going to take nothing, 30 million won't matter. Bird rights won't matter as they still count against the cap in terms of running out and singing some FAs.

“In the fourth quarter they let him get away with everything.”
Oh that’s rich. In addition to the illegal zone, Prince and Rip and Chauncey got to absolutely mug Kobe in those finals.

Pelinka made his feelings clear that he wants James to retire as a Laker and promised to provide him with every resource possible to compete for a championship each year he’s with the organization, sources said.

lonnie and nunn aren't under contract.

the cap is slated to be around 133 million.

AD (40)/THT(11)/christie(2)/reaves' hold(2)/8 min holds(1 each) = 63 million. and THT could, in theory, opt out, dropping it to 53.

so we could have 70-80 million to spend.

if lebron took, say, harden's salary (33), we have 37 million to bring in FAs, whereas if he took his max, we'd have only about 20 or so.

so if we add a hield or a conley or anyone who makes 20ish after this year, then yes, lebron probably just extends at max and we operate over the cap. if we trade for kyrie, the same, as we'll want to use kyrie's bird rights (and will probably extend him right after the trade anyway).

but if we don't move westbrook OR move him for largely expiring contracts, then yes, we could absolutely have a ton of money to spend.

edit: you seem to be maybe thinking cap holds can't be renounced?

Kendrick Nunn and Lonnie Walker are both under contract, what the hell are you talking about? Just check Sportrac, valid contracts in place for both. Nunn exercised his option 6/22/22 and Walker is newly signed. Being MLE changes nothing. Of course they have contracts. We have a basic fundamental problem here if you think that. There is NO WAY THT opts out, just stop that nonsense. No higher offers possibly exist for him. He would have done so earlier when more teams were shopping. So you can immediately add 22 million on to your first addition.

You are using projected cap figures for '23-'24, the cap THIS season is 123.7. So right off the bat you are off 32 million. That almost completely erases your 37 million in freed-up cap figure. I won't even get into the rest of it as it's already a dead end. And it's nothing to do with cap holds.

what? no. this summer is already over. they are not under contract next year. what are you talking about? lebron's under contract for this season. his extension is about next season. this whole conversation is about next season and can't be about anything else!

    and 131-123 is not 37!

2022 -2023 IS THIS NEXT SEASON DUDE! STARTING OCTOBER 2022!

BOTH PLAYERS ARE UNDER CONTRACT 2022-2023!....holy....

    Walker + Nunn are 11.7
THT is 10.3 and he ain't going anywhere I don't care what you say (unless we trade)
The difference between '23-'24 cap (which you used) and '22-'23 cap is 10 million

11.7+11+10.3 = about 32 million difference (as I said) in your figures. You can't just dismiss 3 players under contract for 22 million and use a future seasons cap!

    Just...wow.

    just wow is right.

no discussion of a russ trade involves discussion of this year's (2022-23) cap. at least not in conjunction with a lebron extension (which has no bearing on 2022-23), which is, you know, the thread we're in.

i'm at a loss right now. i've laid out the math. it's clear.

i'm starting to feel like you're maybe just not going to admit you're wrong? i'd love anyone else (jsm, elgin, lvbd, vash's ghost) to weigh in here, as we're not getting anywhere.

Yeah, the impact of LeBron’s extension and him taking a lesser salary would be for 23-24 as that’s when the new salary would kick in.

I think the confusion is based on whether we’re still calling the upcoming season the “next season.”

Somewhere along the way the phrases "last season", "this season", "this off-season", "the upcoming season", "next season", " '21-22 season", " '22-23 season", " '22 season" all hopped in a blender and came out as dyslexic alphabet soup. I tried to track where but it's too headache inducing.

The (unknowingly) agreed foundation is that regardless of what Bron decides today, it does not change our finances for the season we're about to embark on nor does it change what he will earn for the next 82 regular season games (plus playoffs... hopefully). Somehow that got criss crossed into meaning this season in one post and then the response was about the subsequent season(s). Leading us to this point...

If we trade for Kyrie, LBJ taking less could impact Kyrie's future money especially with a frugal mom and pop organization and would could us some flexibility, but that would not be a factor until just under a calendar year from now. That is true if he extends today or after our upcoming season ends, just as long as it's before the next NBA calendar year.

Yeah that's what I've been saying but there is some bs game going on. Why would I be talking about '23-'24 when we are roster building now for this, the upcoming season. And it is very true that we cannot discount LeBron's salary this year but I see we are talking about a different season apparently. Why, I know not as this season is what matters right now. I have said 2022-2023 season repeatedly so I think I was clear enough.

But why does Lebron’s contract extension matter to this season? He already has his numbers set and him signing an extension doesn’t change his wage this year.

Like abeer, I thought the whole premise was how to have cap space next year to build a better team.

I also agree with lavar ball’s papa, no way Lebron takes less than the max. It’s all a legacy thing for him, 20 years at his max salary as one of the best players in the league. The getting to play with his son, all these longevity records.

I forgot Lebron doesn't re-up until next year however I was speaking about the current year, that's why I said 2022-2023 a few times, I see where it got mixed up. I was referring to LBJ's salary like we have to refit him in. Sometimes I get mixed up on contract lengths. Of course by then By next season a lot can happen with pretty much a clean slate as even the few smaller salaries can be clear by then. I was referring strictly to where we are this season, and it's no matter as LBJ's money has to be figured in regardless. Next season we can shed it down to AD's 40 mil by trading THT and have maybe a few small min deals on youngins'.
