    Very interesting parallels.

    There are key differences: Rudy T got fired and Hamlen was hired to reintegrate the triangle offense to prep for Phil's return. However, the 2005 squad did slightly better w/out Kobe (6-8) vs. 2019 (6-11 w/out LBJ).

    There is one missing similarity: both teams had Luke Walton.

    Umm, they did this yesterday in the Denver game. The Lakers are tanking - I guess this just makes it "official"...

    i've been saying this for a few weeks, i think. it's 2005 all over again. good news is that things went better after that. but kobe wasn't 34.

    Not at all similar. In 2005...

    1. We had a coaching change midseason
    2. Our roster was much worse
    3. We had Kobe's off the court stuff looming over the team

    This is more like the 2012-2013 season. We had higher expectations back then, but injuries and veterans who didn't step up, along with a misfit of a coach, lead to the team underperforming in both seasons.

    It's just a bunch of LeBron stans trying to justify why this season shouldn't hurt his legacy. IMO, it shouldn't, but for different reasons. What people are trying to criticize him for though, is the lack of effort he showed. LeBron would rather save his energy for a season where we can contend. Kobe would have (and did) go all out. Neither is a wrong answer, just different mindsets.

    So.. LBJ just passed MJ on the All Time Scoring List.
    Next up is Kobe.. & he'll pass Kobe next Season almost definitely.

    What do you think the response will be...? I for one won't celebrate his achievement & he better be humble AF

    I already gave my response, it’s impressive of course, but I’m not going to act like it puts him above Kobe. If Kobe were handed a team and the green light at 18 like LeBron was, I’ll be conservative and say he averages 15 ppg as a rookie and plays the same 71 games he did. That’s at least 500 more points than he got in season one. Then let’s say he jumps to 18 to 20 in year 2 instead of the 15 he got, that’s another 300-400 more. Around 1,000 points right there. He averaged 20 in his 3rd season and 22.5 in his fourth. I’d imagine all those numbers are a decent amount higher on his own teams without already established all-stars and a superstar in Shaq. His numbers took a huge jump after that, stuff like 28.5, 25, 30. Then they took a hit like everyone’s because Malone and Payton joined us in 2004 and there was sacrifice to get everyone involved. And of course ultimately we know the achilles ended him as the scorer he was. If Kobe gets to start his career like LeBron he could easily have had 2,000 or so more points, without the devistatint injury and some other factors, maybe between 3,000-4,000 more. There’s my revisionist history with a dash of Kobe homerism and a dollop of LeBron hate. :D

    He had a second, and longer, lockout season too.

    I think if Kobe wasn't traded, he probably puts up ppg numbers similar to LeBron. Maybe he doesn't get to 27 his second season, but there would definitely be loads of 40-60 point games all over the place. Honestly, a good comp is someone like Iverson for those early years if he carried the scoring load. In 2003, which Kobe himself says was his peak season, he probably goes bananas. Also if the pace of the game and spacing is comparable, Kobe would easily be averaging 10 3PA on decent efficiency. Think of James Harden, but more skilled, with elite defense.

    He probably doesn't end up with as many rings, though. I have no doubt he'd likely change teams at some point and win a few in his ultimate prime. So which is better for his legacy? I don't know. As a Laker fan though, I prefer the 5 rings.

    Oh I’m completely fine with Kobe’s legacy. I’m glad he came here, I’m glad he had to work even harder to get playing time on a team that already had multiple all-stars on it, I think it helped make him who he was. And of course the rings are more important than the total career points. I was just pointing out that Kobe has a lot more of those total points if he was handed a team at 18, and his career ppg average that people use against him in MJ and LeBron debates isn’t as skewed by his first couple seasons.

    I agree. Career stats aren't smart to compare legacies. It's just cool achievement for the player to see how far they've come, really. LeBron will pass Kobe, but I don't think anyone will call him a better scorer than Jordan or Kobe unless they're seriously just about ppg numbers.
