That's a really good question. Has to be the Bull's GM Gar Forman, but then I looked him up and he started in 2009. Can't be him. Are we talking about active GM's or just any? I was thinking of only active.

    Who is this mystery GM?

The time frame the Lakers had in which they said Boron the a-hole is fired and then made the decision to hire some other coach while figuring Walton needs maybe a liitle more assistant expierience first is the time frame when Luke would have said OK I'm ready to go to team 3 out of the 5 teams that want to pay me multiple millions of dollars now to be their head coach.

With Luuke on board now already a bonafide "closer" per reports .......in addition to going "market price" salaries offered to Mozgov and Deng.....alleviates the irrational need to push Mitch out before it is time. Boring Mitch but who gives a flying f*** now that Luuke is here to recruit?? Mitch is g r eat at what he best does. No rush or urgent need to have him gone until the organization is ready for Ryan who has been around the literal front offices of the Lakers with his dad Jerry the Legend West and Mitch the Magician Kupchack for over 20 years!!!

So, possibly 3 years of missing the PO's come with no consequences? He has to be held accountable.

Once again I'm grateful for the championships. I think all Laker fans are, but this is three straight years of futility. Shouldn't he be held accountable by now? Mitch has had enough time and he simply hasn't been good enough. I do think the assistant GM from OKC would be better for this era for us because he's had a chance to learn from one of the best who has put together great rosters in this era. Mitch has not. At the end of the day Mitch isn't really a modern basketball mind.

No for crissakes ... seriosly.... even if wrong......Mitch is not the person I hold most responsible. WTF...Over?? When it can be equally argued that under the duress of working for a fractured FO with Jim and Jeanie he has been a Magician that has helped keep sirron employed here with all the fun positive Mitch gifs.

So to rap Mitch's knuckles for whatever part, regardless of the pretty universally agreed upon strengths he has, was his the last 3 years for them missing the playoffs .... you have no problem taking a flyer on some outsider and losing (25?.... more?) years around / in the organization Ryan West?

Not going to bother you ...you won't be pissed to no end like me? I don't understand that thinking at all. Just keep Mitch until it's time for Ryan / Mitch's bump up to "consultant".

“Unfortunately, Jim does get a lot of criticism. But no decision is made here without me,” Kupchak says. “If something doesn’t go right, I should be criticized as much as Jim. We are judged, by and large, by our success on the court, and that has to do with the draft, trades, and free agency, and Jim and I decide who we draft, who we trade, and who we pursue in free agency. In terms of talent on the court, by and large that falls with me, and I work very closely with Jim. But Jim trusts my instincts. Sometimes they are good and sometimes they are not good.”

    According to Mitch.

    Your want reasons:

    - Not a extending $1.1 million dollar QI to Bazemore on a cost controlled contract. Then, when Bazemore hits the market you're offering $18 million too him.

    - Failing to Re-sign Ed Davis

    - Hiring Byron Scott.

There is so much I disagree with here but I'm just not motivated to write up a long response. How many down years did Jerry West have between Kareem and Magic retiring until the next ring? Everything was linked to Kobe and an effort to give Dr. Buss the one more run before he died. The rebuild was always going to have to happen. Three years is nothing.

How many rings has the OKC genius won?

And what exactly is a modern basketball mind? Does Jerry West (the GSW architect) have a "modern basketball mind"? Do you know what he thinks about Mitch as a GM?

Did Jerry West ever have a stretch THIS bad? No nobody has. I just don't understand all the excuses being made for Mitch. I love the guy and all he's done, but what has he done well besides draft? He damn near mortgaged our future for Steve Nash. Didn't get anything for Pau or Dwight when it was clear they were leaving. Traded Lamar for nothing. The coaching hires before Luke. You can even go back further and look at his horrible signings like Luke back in 2006 I believe, Steve Blake, Artest, and while Pau Gasol was great that trade seems to give him a lifetime pass by some people and that's not right. Modern basketball mind means someone that can actually I don't know build a team in the modern era. Mitch can't do that. He has shown it time and time again.

The OKC Assistant GM has no rings because his owner refuses to pay for a winner. That FO has consistently put competitive pieces around Westbrook and Durant despite having to shuffle away talented players that deserved money like Harden, Jackson, now Ibaka, soon they'll have to pay Adams and we'll see what they do then. They've been effective in trades and drafts. I don't see any reason to tear them down or to belittle them because they haven't been afforded the opportunities to win that good ownership (Jerry Buss) will give you. If they'd had Jerry Buss, you think they ever let go of Harden or Reggie? With Jerry Buss that FO has a ring right now.

Mitch has made plenty of mistakes and we can't continue to just sit back on his past laurels. I'm not even advocating that he be booted, just moved into a different position. You've mocked almost all my points @TIME while just bringing up rings and past achievements.

If you're not in favor of moving on from him, then what's your answer to the last three years? Are we supposed to just let that continue without consequence? He hitched his wagon to Jim who, whether fair or not, has become an albatross to the public. What's the answer then?

I don't have any issue with the OKC FO. I do have an issue with anyone that assumes the OKC assistant GM who has proven literally nothing is better than Mitch who is a championship producing GM.

Mitch isn't sitting on anything, let alone his laurels.

The answer is trust the man with the track record. Pointing to mistakes is a non-starter. Do I need to list Jerry West's mistakes to prove a point? Yet you would gladly welcome him back as would I. West didn't want to draft Magic. West hired Del Harris. Look at his draft record here. Lots of mistakes.

If listing his mistakes is a non-starter is listing his accomplishments the same?

We've given Mitch over 15 years and he's done both a tremendous job and a terrible one. I don't want to continue this way. How can he preside over the worst seasons in Laker history and keep his job? If I had back-to-back worst ever performances in my job, I'd be fired. Regardless of how well I've done in the past.

Besides, the truth is since this team is unlikely to make the playoffs, let alone compete for a title, Jeanie WILL force her brother and likely Mitch out as well. She's already used her new lackey to spread the word. We're going to have to come to terms with that reality as it unfolds. In that instance, the premise of this thread also becomes a non-starter. It's not about whether or not anyone wants to keep or get rid of Ryan West. It's that he's not ready to take the mantle yet, so we'll have to find someone who is.

I think it was @RandleROFY who brought up transitioning Mitch into President of Bball ops. I'm not opposed to that. I still think we need new and fresh blood though in that office. We needed it on the court. I think we needed it in Vitti's seat. This is just another part of that same movement.

Mitch has not done a terrible job. I think you are missing the bigger picture. This down cycle was unavoidable. Jerry West who actually is a basketball genius had an 8 season down cycle. San Antonio's day is coming too.

The issue is whether Mitch has the ability to build another championship team from the ashes. I'm convinced he was trained for this by Logo and was trained well.

The Spurs have a down period coming? Not winning rings or being in contention for rings? I don't know when they'll win their next ring, but I do know that their going to be contending for a very long time.

Alridge and Leonard have about 3 to 4 good years left together; those are cornerstones to build around. They'll be fine. I dislike the Spurs, too very much.

The Spurs have argurably two top ten players and they're likely signing Pau who's a big upgrade over West. They'll be just fine.

C'mon man. He and Jim have now overseen the worst two seasons in franchise history. I give them something of a pass for the year before which was a disaster for other reasons, but these last two seasons can't be just ignored. It's not just that we were (maybe unfortunately still are as we scrape back up) at the bottom of the barrel, but everyone knows it too. We're not just not a free agent destination anymore, we're a team that can't even get meetings. Three years in a row we've reached new lows.

Now, I'm smart enough to know they were tanking and that they wanted to lose games to get draft picks so that Russell and Ingram can lead us into the future. However, if that's the case they sold a piece of crap wrapped in tinfoil as a piece of jewelry to be displayed like something straight out of Mugatu. They promised so much and delivered so little. There has to be some sort of ramifications for this.

I see the bigger picture. The bigger picture is Mitch stepping into a role where he's not the one beaten down by the baffoonery of his partnership with Jim. The bigger picture is removing he and Jim from FA meetings and bringing back guys who can actually sell things like Kobe and especially Magic. As long as Jim is around, whether it's fair or not, our standings as a team are lower than they should be. Perception became reality for Jim and it's just the way the cookie crumbles. I love what Mitch has done, that's why I want him here in a different capacity, but reviving the spirit of this team can and should come from another source. One without Jim attached.

Still think Danny Ferry with his success in Hotlanta should be our GM. However since he was branded a racist, we will not gamble on him lol.

I really like Ryan. I think he has a keen eye for talent, a basketball pedigree, and has shown a history of good decisions. Seems like a hard worker and charismatic guy who can bring in free agents too. I'd definitely love for Mitch to groom him as his replacement.

Just kidding. I have no idea who he his (other than being Jerry's son) or what he's accomplished. I have no idea what complex nuances are required for someone to do well in a GM position or if Ryan has that potential. I have no clue what key decisions he's contributed to over his tenure. No idea what kind of worker he is or what his personality is like.

The only thing I know about him is that some of you like him and hold him in high regards. If I never came to this forum, I would've never heard of him.

I don't think any of us have anywhere near the kind of information we'd need to judge this guy, positively or negatively. Maybe I'm wrong and I'm the bad fan while you guys have just paid more attention. But I honestly think that's not the case. We're in an echo chamber. Some of you maybe read a few fluff pieces or hit pieces and are influenced to write positively or negatively about him. Then the rest of us, being ignorant about the situation and generally trusting the opinions of other posters here, are influenced by those posts.

I just have no idea how there can be sufficient information out there about an assistant GM (or whatever he is) that so many of you have thoroughly evaluated to form an opinion on this guy and pass judgement on what kind of role he should have going forward.

Not trying to offend anyone in particular or discredit this discussion, it's just not something I can contribute to. And that's not to say I will blindly trust whatever decision ownership makes, I just don't know enough to be happy or upset either way. It's just something I'll have to watch as it plays out.

I doubt anyone thinks it's a bad idea to keep him.
