For the heckuvit, tossed this in a trade checker and it worked. Clippers trade: DeAndre Jordan and Jamal Crawford Clippers receive: Melo and Mozgov Knicks trade: Melo and Joakim Noah Knicks receive: Deng and Jordan Lakers trade: Deng and Mozgov Lakers receive: Crawford and Noah
Alright you guys ready? I know it's just a "what if" scenario, but IMO, Nick and Lou are the same player (style-wise) and Crawford is just adding another SwaggyLou clone. But if it rids us of Moz, I'd bite.
That "what if" was really about finding a realistic way to horn ourselves into this Knicks/Clippers discussion as they look for a 3rd team and to move Deng/Moz in the process. That said, for discussion purposes, Swaggy is likely to opt out and hit free agency after this season and Lou is very tradeable. So while style-wise Crawford is redundant, it'd be a solvable issue. But yeah, not happening. Don't see the Lakers assisting in the Clippers getting Melo. Don't see the Clippers giving up Jordan. Was fun to toss around though.
True. Noah got 4 years 72 million while Mozgov got 4 years 64 million. However, this trade isn't Moz for Noah straight - a trade I wouldn't do, although I like Noah more because of his defensive skills. If you consider the Deng/Crawford swap, the Lakers take back 84.33 million after this season but unload 102 million. So strictly fiscally speaking, the Lakers benefit - with 16.235 million in savings in 2019 when Russell/Nance/Zubac hit free agency.
We'll have the Bird Rights on those three, I'm not worried about keeping them. I would like to be rid of Deng's deal, but I'm not going to just do it for finance. Not yet and definitely taking back Noah is something I'm not interested in. If we got say a draft pick or two and Noah's contract, then I'd be more willing to play ball.
Yeah the Lakers have the bird rights and could keep all three but they owe nearly 50M to Deng, Clarkson, Moz in 2019-2010, on top of Randle hitting FA in 2018 and whatever contracts are handed out between now and then. I agree the Lakers don't need to make a financially-driven move now but it's certainly something that should be on the table in the future if they want to keep their core and not have their payroll skyrocket and have drastic luxury tax implications. Anyhow, you brought up that Noah is getting paid more than Moz. I was merely clarifying that the entire trade saved the Lakers money. That's all. Like I said, it was a "heckuvit" trade, not one I meant with any level of seriousness.
We are trying to run a free-flowing, motion offense. Melo is the epitome of a ball-stopper. As much of a "star" as Melo is, it's possible we would be worse with him. And as John 3:16 said, Melo plays the same position as Ingram. The only trades I make at this point are Swaggy and Lou for picks with some crappy expiring filler. I don't want to get better. As much as it pains me to say it, we are in the same position we were in last season. I honestly don't know how considering we were .500 through the first 1/4 of the season. I don't want to tank, but to actively make moves to make us marginally better this season... I mean, obviously if Chicago wants to part with Butler or Sacramento with Cousins for a reasonable package, I'd do it. But nothing more.
I don't like the Moz signing, but at the end of the day, he's still 7 feet tall. Deng is truly the worst contract the Lakers have signed...maybe ever. Contracts like Walton and George...at least they were only 5 million on a team that was waaay over the cap anyway. Deng is pitiful and he is taking up a spot that could have been used to lure a second max free agent to sort of accomplish the whole tandem signing. Mozgov, IMO, could still have some actual value on the court. Not value enough to justify that contract, but Deng just kills us.
I don't have any interest in Melo and I'm sure Melo has no interest in joining the Lakers. I tossed an idea above for fun, and while it's far from some outlandish scenario in terms of straight value, it's never happening because Lakers being the 3rd team to help facilitate a Clippers/Knicks trade is just not happening.
i'd be willing to take on salary in exchange for limited protection future picks. from the clips, i want something like, top-5 protected 2019 or 2020 pick. prey on rivers as coach/gm. he'll sacrifice the future for the present. capitalize on it.
