Will sort of dropped of the map for me a few years back. Dude ain't funny anymore, he just lost it. Nowhere near as funny as Old School, Stepbrothers. He just tries too hard now and yells and screams most of the time as if that's funny. That said, John C is a surprise as Dr Buss but he is a far better dramatic actor than Will is..
John C. Reilly is excellent in the role of Dr. Buss. Like almost Emmy worthy thus far. It may be the best role of his career.
yeah, the dramatization is pretty campy, and that seems intentional? i'm not sure it lands as intended, though. i think i like the show because it seems like it's made by people who love the team/era. like if bill simmons made an 80s C Bags miniseries. you know, except the opposite and thus less vomitous. portraying bird that way is a result of all that, right? the protagonist of the series is sort of...the lakers, and caricaturing the villains comes with that. i am quite curious about west, hearn, and riley, though. i know west and others have disagreed with his portrayal, but is any of it true? like, did he just sort of hang around after quitting as coach? did he attempt to install elgin baylor in the fashion depicted in the show (sort of without consent/involvement of buss and others)? we do know he wanted to draft moncrief, for example, so it's not like it's total fabrication. i sort of enjoy the off-air badassery that is chick and want to believe it for some reason. i also find it hard to believe that westhead was such a wuss. you can't get to that level being that unsure of yourself, imo.
I agree that Westhead’s characterization is over the top, watching vintage games during that era shows a man of confidence and resolve although Marshal nailed the voice lol
west has battled depression his entire life. combine that with all those finals losses to boston and it wouldn't surprise me at all if he was an unpleasant person to be around. of course they dramatized it because hollywood, but i wouldn't doubt if the portrayal isn't that far off not sure if chick was an alcoholic, but i've heard he could be quite the a-hole back in the day and they portrayed bird the way i expected them too, which was by playing up the redneck thing (white, redneck kid from rural indiana vs the black, city kid living it up in LA) i'm curious to see the other series coming out in the summer which the lakers are behind and whether that one will also be dramatized to this level or if it'll be more if a documentary type thing
I find the show very entertaining. it's not boring or completely factual, I enjoy the way folks are being portrayed because there is always a percentage fact.
Btw, the guy playing Kareem and the actor portraying McKinnie are pretty convincing. Brodie isn’t too shabby either.
The author of "Showtime" responded and I think his view is as thoughtful as Kareem's: I had the same thought as Pearlman. It kinda feels like Cap watched one episode.
Well, Kareem's response is the only one that matters in this discussion and puts to rest all the... "was it really like that?", at least for some things. This Perelman dude can piss off, for all I care. I don't care whether Kareem thinks it's an entertaining show. That's subjective. I do care that he says quite a lot of things are simply false. That's not subjective and supports my (and others) stance on -- much of the "dramatization" was unnecessary and dumbed down. Anyway... arguing over fiction is the dumbest thing. Not sure why I did that in the frst place, so I am out of here. Enjoy the show.
i think kareem has some thoughtful points, but, ironically (given his explicit stance), it's his points about the facts that register more impact than his (imo, inaccurate) criticism of the attempts to entertain. i can see why he's not entertained, but i'm not sure he's right that what they did hasn't worked in terms of hooking an audience. i'll also say that i'm not sure everyone is really a caricature--i think riley and magic, in particular, are portrayed in a complex fashion. and they spent a ton of time on mckinnie, who is a minor figure for most fans. he may be right that the portrayal of west, jeanie, and him (and bird, i guess) are maybe a little too focused on central aspects. and he's definitely right to speak (and should be amplified) about the fact that he never behaved that way towards children. but to me, in his attempt to appear unbiased he gave himself away. he's rightfully pissed that they made him seem like someone who punishes people who have nothing to do with his oppression. that's b*******. call them on it. but that's also the impetus for your criticism. not boredom. that's just your attempted dig. you're interested enough to write about it.
I would add that Kareem doesn’t get to decide what’s funny, I thunk it’s funny. Humor is subjective. Yeah, there’s lowbrow, there’s really crappy comedy, but still nobody gets to decide what’s funny expect the person watching it.
tbh, i haven't found myself laughing at times when i think they wanted me to, but i keep watching. and i have other options. actually, i'm not sure it's as comic-leaning as kareem suggests anyway. the way they portrayed the C Bags game--without showing much in the way of simulated game footage--was sort of nerve-wracking in the way that watching big games can be as a fan. that's quality work.
I think the Jerry West as portrayed in the show is pretty likable. Obsessed in every way to win with quirks the way a fictional take should go. The story has not ended yet, everyone as we know, will be redeemed. I don’t know what their problem is.
west is pretty much proving that the portrayal isn't that far off not sure why anyone is mad when they make it very clear that the show is a FICTIONALIZED account of what took place. although i will say i rarely find myself laughing when watching the show. if they intended for it to be a comedy, they didn't do a very good job. but it is sure entertaining
Because that's a Hollywood version of "you stoopid, lol j/k". Or tobacco companies having to put "Smoking kills" on the pack. It's an a** cover. It doesn't absolve you from anything, just indicates that you had a semi-competent lawyer and wanted to depict your d****** version of real-life events, because "art" and "comedy".
i mean, all historical movies are this, as are many other shows/movies. it's not as though this the first time someone has taken creative license with real-life events, even involving living people. lol. obviously why he's mad. i am curious as to why he's portrayed as rage-filled in demonstrably physical ways, though, as pretty much no one describes him as such, right? my best guess is that it's difficult to portray the level of anger that jerry obviously carries without the physical outbursts. and yes, i agree that him suing for defamation is sort of...doesn't help his case. you're really mad about how they say you're a really mad person. anyway, it's a shame that west is going to end his life in a blood feud with all things lakers. just not the way that real-life story should play out.
