They've done this series on a few other teams, but I found this one really interesting. Growing up during that era, Penny being the first player I remember watching at University of Memphis when I was but a tike. I followed that team pretty closely during those early 90s years. It's an extremely long read, but worth it: http://grantland.com/1990s-orlando-magic-oral-history/ Some highlights and tidbits that stood out to me: -Shaq's agent wanted him in LA when he was drafted. -They were set on Webber up until Penny's workout just prior to the draft. He really sold himself to management. -I either forgot or didn't realize just how much they get in return for trading Webber. Netted them 3 first round picks...by asking for 5. Hell of a negotiation. -They were one of the first teams to trade for cap space. Moved Skiles and a 1st for a 2nd round pick and the league didn't want to allow it because they weren't getting enough compensation. Stern tried sticking his head where it didn't belong even back then. -Just how traumatic those 4 FTs in the Finals were to Nick Anderson and the rest of his career. -There's a bunch of good quotes about Shaq's departure to LA (from ORL players and management, Shaq, West) and how the timeline played out. -Nick recalled a convo he had with Dwight where D12 thinks he could've beaten the ORL Shaq.
