Brunson sure is a nice player. Wasn’t much familiar with his game. That’s how you do good all around at 6’2”. Strong little “effer”. :D

They sometimes don’t complete the stats in all the boxes on this site. Have looked twice since end of Spain game and Reaves’s was incomplete for whole game.

Plays in control, does not force anything... He's the facilitator. Edwards is the closer. Reaves is the sparkplug (undercover Laker recruiter).

Hope that’s not the best option / source we’re going to get for the detailed box scores this whole tournament and the practice games run up. Fire the clown responsible from whatever pittance he was being paid and get someone who wants the job, FIBA.

Looks like they finally updated the Box Score & Stats from the Game vs. Spain.
Quality control is a bit shaky though. Not sure how much I'd trust this source.. o_O
i.e. If you look up Cam Johnson's minutes played it says "2:51 p.m.".

or of just being 7'3". he played 65 games last year, and you'd have to go back to 2017(!) to find another 60+ games played. he averages 50 games played per season; he's not an iron man.

When Jackson spoke of his concerns about him being "too tall" I thought it was just him being sarcastic thinking isn't that a requirement in the sport? Crazy...

No, you're right though. Big risk getting him. It's actually one of my least favorite league wide moves this summer. I think they got worse (good!), the fit is a little clunky, and I don't think he'll be there when they need him in the playoffs.

yeah, he caught a lot of flak for it, but i understood what he meant. we've been over it on here before, but basically nobody over 7'2" has had even semi-healthy nba careers. it's probably not a magic number, but you can't just dismiss it. people sort of aren't supposed to be that tall...

i notice nobody's asked phil about wemby, or at least he's wisely demurred.

yeah, i think it's a huge risk. and it's another player who can't pass the ball. it was weird to me, especially after the initial plan to move brogdon was replaced with smart's exit.

anyway, horford/zinger/williams has to be one of the most fragile frontcourts around.

Team USA is running (some of) the Golden State Warriors’ offense: ‘We’re keeping it simple’
    [IMG]
    By Joe Vardon
    1h ago
ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates — Toward the end of Team USA’s intrasquad scrimmage Wednesday, Jaren Jackson Jr. dribbled the ball up the court when he extended the fingers in his other hand, lifted it into the air and yelled, “Open.”

Tyrese Haliburton, who was on Jackson’s side for the scrimmage, sprinted to take the ball from him in a dribble-handoff action. Cam Johnson, meanwhile, stood in the opposite corner, waiting to run a crossing action with another teammate.

Remember, the coach of Team USA this summer is Steve Kerr. If this particular play sounds familiar to any Golden State Warriors fans out there, well, that’s because this is one of their plays.

In this instance, Jackson bringing it up the court is something seen from Draymond Green, though if “open” is called when the ball is with one of the Warriors’ point guards, then either Green or Kevon Looney catches the ball away from the basket.

The Haliburton action is something you’d see from Stephen Curry, and on Wednesday, Haliburton tried a Steph-like 3 after the handoff. Johnson in the corner, waiting to run off a backdoor screen, is a role usually played by Andrew Wiggins or Klay Thompson.

“Wiggins is always where Cam Johnson’s at,” explained Mikal Bridges, who said he’s received shots in practices and Team USA’s three exhibition games off the same “open” sequence. “They go two-man side, they always hit Looney or Draymond when he rolls, this guy (Johnson/Wiggins/Bridges/Thompson) just cuts and they always just throw the lob dunk or bounce-pass layup. It’s so tough to guard because you’re so worried about the 3 that he might back cut you, but then if you overhelp on the back cut, you got Klay or somebody on this side.

“That’s like the vision I see when we run that offense,” Bridges continued. “They don’t win all those championships for no reason. They got the talent, but all the playcalling and player movement.”

Team USA behind-the-scenes thoughts: How Steve Kerr manages team chemistry

When Kerr was announced as the next Team USA coach following the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, there was immediate excitement in basketball circles about the possibilities of Kerr unleashing his famous Warriors offense on the international community.

To some degree, that is what’s happened, as Team USA is indeed running the “open” set, with dribble handoffs and drag screens along the baseline. The Americans are running slip screens that Curry has made famous, too. They’re averaging 102.3 points per game (in 40-minute contests), with 83 assists on 127 baskets. Though they are shooting just 32 percent from 3, they’re getting wide-open looks. Point guard Jalen Brunson, like Curry on the Warriors, is Team USA’s leading scorer in the exhibitions, at 15 points per game.

However, if you’ve happened to watch any of Team USA’s three games (all wins) and haven’t quite seen the Warriors’ schemes shine through, it’s for a couple of reasons.

“Steph’s the best shooter of all time,” Brunson reasoned. “He can shoot it from anywhere.”

Yes, for as good as the players on Team USA’s roster are — and they’re pretty good — none of them quite play like Curry. There are things he does that make the Warriors’ offense special — the absurd accuracy from great lengths, the constant movement without the ball and the ballhandling. No single USA player possesses all three of those skills.

So Brunson (or Haliburton) might run the same action Curry runs for Golden State, but they may shoot a different shot than the one Curry takes in those spots.

Also, Kerr has limited the playbook for Team USA to only his most basic offensive actions because there isn’t enough practice time before the FIBA World Cup starts next week to perfect the more elaborate, confusing plays.

Finally, the easy layups and dunks the Warriors’ generate off their back screens and cuts haven’t been there as often for Team USA because FIBA rules for defensive players make it much easier to pack the paint.

“We’re not really looking to set up the same shots that we would get for Steph or Klay, but we’re (using) similar actions to get floor spacing, to get balance, to attack certain areas of the floor,” Kerr said. “We’re keeping it simple, but we’re trying to execute it really well.”

Team USA tour may be the height of Mikal Bridges' hoops life. And he's done a lot

The U.S. roster is full of players — and coaches — who have been on the other side of the Warriors’ offense: the less appealing task of having to defend against it, especially in a playoff series.

Brunson, Jackson and assistant coach Tyronn Lue have all been engaged in high-level postseason matchups against Kerr, trying to match his elaborate schemes and the superstars at Kerr’s disposal. Lue, Jackson and Austin Reaves have been on teams that beat the Warriors in the postseason (Jackson’s Grizzlies beat Golden State in the 2021 Play-In Tournament).

“Now I’m finally getting a chance to coach the actions that we played against for four years,” said Lue, who is the head coach of the Clippers and faced the Warriors in the NBA Finals four times as a coach with the Cavaliers. “A lot of the quick action that we run (on Team USA), with the high pick away with the bigs and the guards coming off that screen, we get a lot of that. And then we really haven’t had a chance to see the end-game stuff because there hasn’t been a lot of close games, but in end-of-game situations in practice, like the need-3s and need-2s (the Warriors run), we’ve gotten a chance to see them a lot as well.”

The Americans are in the middle of three consecutive days of practice in Abu Dhabi before they play two more exhibition games this weekend, against Greece and Germany. Kerr said he wanted to use the time to “add layers” to the offense, but really, that means just getting better at the basic formations and routes the coaching staff has already installed. In truth, other NBA teams run the plays Team USA is using, which is part of the idea to keep things familiar and simple.

But having them taught by Kerr, and having watched Curry and Thompson, and Green and Looney, and Kevin Durant, to name a few, run these same actions and win titles with them, is part of the allure of playing for Team USA.

“You get a couple of shots out of those actions, it’s pretty cool,” Johnson said. “There’s pace and running, and you feel that. To be put in situations where I’m able to run off pindowns and run through and cut through and be part of actions where it’s a lot to handle for a defense (like Thompson and Wiggins on the Warriors), it’s fun.”
