I am 100% on board because it's not my money. I have some friends who cover the Dodgers and they're more tied into the cash end of the spectrum, but they all say if we get him it really hurts our chances down the road to keep Kershaw. Personally, I want Stanton and I'm willing to eat that contract as long as we don't have to give up too much to get him. If it cost us Joc/a mid-tier prospect, and a couple low-tier prospects I am 100% in. Can you imagine a lineup of Taylor/Seager/Turner/Stanton/Bellinger? Can you imagine that? What was the one thing we needed more than anything else this post season? Slugging with men on base. I mean c'mon. To me it's a no-brainer. Of course, that being said, what I've heard is that Miami is asking for a ton. Hopefully this happens. I want to leave this winter with at least one of Stanton or Otani.
Rumor is clarity on a Giants or Cardinals deal will either be finalized or rejected in the next 2-3 days by Stanton. I'm really hoping he rejects both. I don't think either team is really that much more competitive than Miami although both teams have a better history of winning. As for Otani, he rejected the Yankees from the outset because of their market. That doesn't necessarily bode well for the Dodgers, but hey we're still alive for now! I wanted to leave this off-season with at least one. If we left with both I'd be ecstatic.
It found it hilarious that the Marlins would try to fire sale the team around him in an attempt to force him to release his no trade clause. What kinda BS is that? You hand the guy that type of contract, only to try and sabotage him? That won't fare well for them in the long run for free agents in the future. Who wants to go to any organization like that?
Oh I think their appeal as FA destination is already as bad as can be. They're a trainwreck franchise and Jeter has his hands full trying to save them. That was a completely empty threat anyway. In a year, Stanton can opt out of that massive deal and barring a major injury can cash in and the Marlins get nothing at all. If I were Stanton, I'd just openly demand a trade to the Dodgers (or maybe a short 1-3 list) and kill any value Miami could get back. They're screwing with easily the best player they've got. Why help them out? If I were him, I'm not excited to go to the Giants or the Cardinals. I don't think either franchise is truly competitive right now and especially the Giants have no good way to get to competitiveness over the next few years.
Damn, if the Dodgers walk away with Ohtani and Stanton this offseason, book your World Series tickets now.
Latest rumor is Stanton might stick it out another year. The Dodgers don't want him this summer because they want to get under the salary cap and Kazmir, Gonzalez, and McCarthy screw that up. If Stanton stays in Miami and comes next summer, the Dodgers would be more willing to eat his contract. Right now the Giants have offered up the best offer they can put together for Stanton. So maybe the best case would be Stanton goes to San Francisco, depletes their farm even more, and then bounces to the Dodgers in a year or two. If that's the case, then hopefully we get Otani. I'm eager to see what that guy has. It'd be a massive disappointment for me if the Giants got Otani.
I won't pretend I'm not disappointed, but at least it wasn't the Giants or Yankees. Next up: Stanton apparently has or will reject trades to the Giants and Cardinals. He will (rumoredly) accept a trade to the Dodgers, Cubs, Yankees, or Astros. Dodgers are viewed as the clear favorite, but they will not make a move unless they can clear salary to get there (Gonzalez, Kazmir, and McCarthy).
I'm not going to lie, I'm very unhappy right now. The Dodgers aren't going to have the same season they had last year. They've got holes to fill. I've been told to be patient, but this team isn't good enough and they just missed on the two best pieces to put them over the top.
As you mentioned before, it’s back to the cheap days isn’t it? Missing out on the big stars and trying to get cheap bargain solutions. It’s caused us to be unable to take on Stanton’s contract. McCarthy and Kazmir have become like Deng and Mozgov: overpaid, mediocre, and nearly unmovable. They better not miss out on Harper or Machado next offseason.
It’s Money Ball with a franchise that has a lot of money. This time. But if they act like Oakland then I’ll be frustrated. Yankees will have Stanton and Judge. That’s worth the price of admission.
Looks like the Dodgers might morph into he Oakland A’s. Get ready for a lot of analytic patchwork to the roster.
That's what we got last year, we just got fortunate with a massive win streak. This front office has reverted back to the one I hated the last two seasons.
This hurts. I doubt the FO is willing to spend anything this year. Our best hope is to find reclamation projects/hidden gems like Taylor or Morrow and to hope again that the prospects can be like Seager and Bellinger. Thankfully for us, the NL doesn't look like it's become stronger. I believe that we are going to have to at least strengthen the bullpen through trade for someone like Britton because we can't rely on Baez again.
