oddly, that preseason game really (pleasantly) surprised me from ingram, as i'd seen zero evidence to that point that he was effective off the ball. hopefully, it wasn't a mirage.

I still think they all encourage guys like BI and Kuz to work on creating their own shot off the dribble. So come playoff time as the clock winds down, if needed there are more capable guys who can do that. :p

By the eye test - better.
By the defensive metrics, he was one of the worst over the past two seasons, and he's up about 20 spots over where he was last year. Better. Far from good.

His coach has praised his effort on defense several times this season, for what it's worth.

yeah...so far this year, you'd have to say russell was our best #2 overall pick. and that's not saying much. *sorry, just vomited a bit*

now, he has had some extra time to develop, so i won't go jumping to conclusions, but it's safe to say that the folks that were glad to see him gone probably shouldn't have been.

As many of your know, I made up this totally fabricated stat that would bolster my interpretations of players. One of them I call PAFF - passing efficiency. It's like the Power/Speed number in baseball, but it's for assist rate and assist to turnover rate. So, players who are able to hand out lots of assists and players who are able to maximize avoiding TOs are rewarded. The best players will have lots of assists and few turnovers, but very efficient ball handlers who don't turn it over much and also players who just hand out a ton of assists will also score well.

Here is Russell's PAFF by season:
    1516: 3.13
    1617: 3.64
    1718: 3.91
1819: 4.04 (still not as good as Ball's 4.05 as a rookie, but it's better than Ball's 3.70 this season)

Here's the way I break down the PAFF stat:
    1 - terrible
    1.5 - poor
    2 - adequate
    2.5 - solid
    3 - good
    3.5 - excellent
    4 - exceptional

So, Russ went from good to excellent to near exceptional to exceptional. Note that these numbers are overall, not taking position into account. Your PG should be at least in the 3.5 range.

First and foremost, it's great seeing you post more again. You were missed.
Does your formula account for usage rate? Accruing assists with low turnovers while not being ball dominant is extra fancy, right?

Well, most of what we call "advanced" stats are (often arbitrarily) fabricated.

The only inputs are assists per minute and assists divided by assists plus TOs. AST/to already handles the non ball dominant ones. AST rate is supposed to handle the ball dominant ones. Here are my thoughts:

    Ceteris paribus, good passers will...
    Hand out assist
    Hand out assists frequently
    Minimize turnovers

So, someone who has a 5:1 ast to ratio but hands out only 1 assist every 30 minutes of game time may be risk averse rather than efficient. So both the rate and the “cleanness” of the assists are weighed.

Someone who just hands out a ton of assists but does so with a poor ast/to ratio gets points, but if they’re really that bad, then, ceteris paribus, they should be stopped from passing. If they aren’t it’s a sign that they’re being efficient enough.

Another 20/10 game. Best plus minus among starters. And a win.
