Just realized D'Angelo Russell kind of reminds me of young Ken Griffey Jr. After watching an ESPN vid

    Fantastic insight as always.

Interesting to note that many of Russell's pick and roll defenses issues really weren't his fault as he was calling out "ICE" but Nance usually wasn't on the same page. Makes a lot of sense seeing the different defensive coverages the Lakers tried to use after watching this video.

In the YouTube comment section I saw that he plans to make more for summer league:

I think we'll be better defensively this year; we can't be much worse.

Whether we are better or not remains to be seen.

Its safe to say it can't get worse than our current position (30th) in defensive efficiency.

Much like our offense, the defense will benefit from schematic changes into a more modern approach...

well, what we'll get is some clarity. the byron variable being removed from the situation will let us know just how much of the ineptitude from the last couple years has to do with the players themselves. honestly, the kobe variable was also at play.

i think we'll know if russell is really a bad defender who can't pass by the end of this year.

Luke will actually tell them what they are doing wrong and help them correct it, not just have them do suicides til they figure it out.

Byron's method didn't work. Because they haven't figured it out.

Byrons methods were to old fashion for today's game, he should've adjusted to how his players play... They all run and gun he should've let them loose... Luke will do that, that's how today's game is fast pace shoot jump... If a team can do all that and play defense!??

I think the Byron trashing has reached its peak and now it's boarder line disrespectful, I'm sorry.

The man is one of all time Laker greats, he has a TON of basketball knowledge, and last time I checked , he was hired as a coach to setup a foundation for the next guy, which was Luke and it's gonna work beautifully. Let's not act like he had even a "GOOD" roster, nor put in a position to succeed.

He did go about tough love, we don't truly know what was going on behind the scenes. Sometimes when a young great player comes on a team with low talent, they might have an entitlement of doing it my way cause it's worked my entire life, and I truly believe at times Byron was saying this is the NBA, where an undrafted guy can start outplaying you in one year.

Any hoot, let's move on, he put in the time and did so when nobody else really wanted to.

Russell in a few years MIGHT look back and say Byron was the coach that made the biggest difference in his career due to the age&time he came into the league.

With love, your fellow laker homeboy.

if the argument is that byron might be taking the blame for things that we will learn ultimately weren't all his fault, i'd get sfgold's point.

but that doesn't elevate him past the many legit criticisms one could list. he obviously had trouble relating to players, especially the more important young ones. and he clearly had trouble scheming to his team's (few) strengths.

i don't think luke's going to be the panacea that most do, but it's hard not to improve on one of the worst coaches in nba history.

again, that said--it's on russell and randle to prove that byron was a major limiting factor for them.

He only coached the Lakers for 2 years....

And he has the worst record of any coach that had coached 1,000 games.

But it has nothing to do with Byron.

    :Shaqwink:

Hey, I'd LOVE to be able to support Byron, but hot crap just falls through your fingers.

"Byron was the coach that made the biggest difference in my career" said no NBA player. Ever.

If anything, Byron was under criticized.
