the turnovers were incredibly frustrating. he's got more skill and vision than that, which means, as you suggest, it's a lack of focus that's causing those.

he's lost all confidence in his shot, too. of course, it's a chicken/egg thing, as he can't hit the broad side of a barn.

i'll try to focus on the positive: he's a better finisher than I expected at draft time. he finishes very well with his off hand in traffic, even occasionally being able to put proper English and use larger chunks of the glass. that's not easy, in my experience.

the passes that didn't go straight into the hands of opposing players for fast break points were also pretty fantastic. nice lob to randle, great bullet pass under the basket when trapped in the corner, couple of nice pocket passes on the pick and roll that, of course, led nowhere due to the receivers.

Is there any way to spin up like a child protective services case, but for an underage adult (20) to bring against the FO if they moronically bring Byron the a-hole back another year?? Cruel and unusual and definitely harmful behavior from the powers that be in the Lakers organization being forced on this fine young player. :Kareemlook:

Public support for such an aggressive course of action would be huge.

Edit- Serena is WRONG actually. Rondae Hollis-Jefferson leads rookies with 1.4 steals per game.

Russell DOES lead rookies however in TOTAL steals. The leaderboard for rookies is:

    10. Cauley-Stein- 37
    9. Booker- 39
    8. Grant- 43
    7. Nance Jr. -47
    6. S. Johnson- 50
    5. Porzingis- 53
    4. Towns- 55
    3. Mudiay- 62
    2. Winslow- 62

    1. Russell- 87

To be fair of that list, he's played more minutes than everyone except Winslow and Towns.

Russell has fantastic defensive instincts and is long for a pg, so the steals don't surprise me. if he learns how to navigate screens and attend a bit more off-ball, he's going to be a very good defender, imo. not passable, good. he's already passable, imo.

btw, look at larry nance on that list. I really like larry. can't explain it; just think larry's going to stick in this league.

Something has got to be wrong. This kid can shoot to save his life right now. He might finish the season sub .400 which is a shame considering the kind of run he was on last month.

^Could be a combination of factors...hitting that rookie wall as the season winds down, defenses adjusting to his tendencies and the Young fiasco is probably weighing on his mind. A lot for a young man to deal with from a physical and mental standpoint.

Yeah alot of it is probably fatigue. I also kinda feel like the knee bruise and ankle sprain in mid/late March threw him off a good rhythm.

I also think he's probably not all there. I think it's fair to say the young guys are packed in for the year. The final few games here are about Kobe and they know it, they've been told as much. It's a horrible environment for these kids, no wonder they're not as focused as they should be. We're force feeding Kobe the ball like it's 2005 out here.

I feel that Russell will look A LOT better with some quality pieces around him. Give him at least a serviceable pick n roll big and a SF that can hit the 3 and we'll see a huge boost in his game.

"Russell Breaks Franchise Rookie 3-Point Record

    by Joey Ramirez
    Digital Reporter
    Posted: Apr 06, 2016

With a triple early in the fourth quarter against the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday, D'Angelo Russell broke the Lakers' 22-year-old record for 3-pointers in a season by a rookie.

That basket from downtown pushed Russell past Nick Van Exel, who hit 124 in 1993-94.

The 20-year-old's proficiency from deep extends outside the franchise, as he is also the youngest player in NBA history to sink at least 120 3-pointers.

Russell averages 1.6 3-pointers per game, which leads all rookies ahead of Phoenix's Devin Booker (1.3). His 35.1 percent clip from deep also ranks fifth among first-year players.
