I wasn't necessarily referring to here, but other forums, Twitter, NBA analysts, a lot of people were killing the Lakers for making that pick and those criticisms only got louder as the season started. I don't have any issue with Okafor. I think he's a good kid and I've said I think he's gonna be a very good player. I just was frustrated how so many people were so quick to label Russell a bust and not giving him a chance to live up like he's starting too.

Two weeks ago a friend of mine (Laker fan, big D'Angelo critic) told me he'll be impressed when he can hold Curry to 20 points. I told him that's too much to expect from a rookie, especially when no one in the league can do it.

Well, today he's now a believer!

Gotcha. There was definitely a lot of talk of "bust" in the media and on Twitter. I don't hold much stock in Twitter opinions though. I think people are generally much dumber on Twitter than most other places. It's just as bad as Youtube comments or the suggestion box at the office.

Around here there was a lot of talk about patience. I mean there were of course the negativity that would come after a bad game, but I don't know there were many that called this kid a bust on this site.

@therealdeal I don't think it's negativity. I can't speak for others but I like to mention Okafor as a yardstick against which we can measure Russell's growth this season. Okafor is playing great and he's basically what we all expected from the get-go. A lot of us expected him to be the ROTY and he probably would have won it if it wasn't for 2 other overachievers (KAT, Porzingis) Russell is also an overachiever. He wasn't supposed to be this good this soon. So I like going back to that comparison to gauge how much he has exceeded our expectations.

LOL that's hilarious. It's like Kobe is looking at his younger self when he looks at D'Angelo.

    LOL

I don't think Kobe looked at DAR though... He didn't move his eyes when DAR moved.

That's one thing, but the question I believe was "Anyone out there still wish we drafted Bumfights Okafor?"

    I don't think that's very positive. :D

    Yeah, Okafor is no bum.

I wanted Okafor as well but looking back, knowing what we know now, DAR was the easily the best pick. KAT was unobtainium at #1 and Porzingis is also franchise-player material but a terrible fit next to Julius. DAR ended up being both the best talent available and best possible fit.

For clarification, the term "Bumfights" was not meant to suggest that Okafor is a bum as a player. He's clearly not. Rather, the name is a celebration of his propensity for getting into public fistfights, no less than one of which resulted in him having a f@%king gun pointed at his head. Remember what the logo said: character counts.

Yep. I openly admit I was wrong. I didn't think Russell would adapt so easily to the NBA game, but he proved me wrong. I'm gladly eating crow on that one. I would have been even more uncomfortable with the Porzingis pick and honestly the media has overblown that kid's value.

I don't know if zinger would actually be a bad fit next to randle--in fact, I think he might be an ideal fit, as their games on both ends are pretty complimentary:

offense: randle scores around the bucket and creates shots off the dribble for himself and others; kp hangs more on the perimeter unless he's finishing lobs.

defense: randle has quick feet and plays his man fairly well, and is strong enough to hold ground in the post against bruisers; kp uses his length to disrupt shots and passing lanes, but doesn't have a strong base. you could cross match when the opposition dictated (strong low post center, randle could guard).

anyway, water under the bridge. the homer in me still thinks Russell has a higher ceiling than zinger, but it's very close. both look to be very good players. I'd take either over okafor (and I was an okafor guy, pre-draft), but neither over towns.

so, in short, wrong again, Philadelphia.
