I do think it breaks what you can ask for him. Because if teams were already looking at him as a borderline 1st round pick equivalent, then coming out and looking like he did in the summer tips the scales in that wrong direction. He came out and showed zero improvement, not in confidence, not on defense, it just wasn’t there. Meanwhile Bronny came out and looked like he had a year of work and growth put in. That stuff matters in a league that’s full of the best of the best, where what keeps you in the league is razor thin when so many guys are waiting on the fringes for their shot to get in. All that said this doesn’t mean Dalton’s career is over and he can’t turn this around during the season, but I do think it means that’s where his value is at this time.
When half the league was on the fence or out on you since draft night, you're not doing yourself any favors. There is a reason he dropped. When you get traded and have to take time away from the team, teams are going to question his mental. Being traded ended Odom's career. If you're telling teams he's good, then he goes out and seems like an uninterested turnstile who can't shoot. Guess what they're alllll the way out now. When you're an older 2nd year player getting outclassed at every moment by both Bronny (hungry and improved) or a by a similar 1 trick pony in Swider it looks BAD. Definitely. Doesn't mean he's Euro bound but he definitely hasn't helped himself. With the roster we have today, he needed a great summer league AND great camp. He f***ed up one of those chances for himself. When he loses the camp battle, his remaining value is completely in the toilet. Then he's just salary ballast. I don't see a path for meaningful minutes here next season.
I don’t think he did himself any favors either but I think way too much is being made of a few summer league games. Players get traded and check out mentally all the time in this league. Hell I think Ayton checked out mentally in Portland. I certainly don’t expect him to do the same here and if I was a GM interested in shooting, I’d still be interested in Knecht. Not many rookies are making 9 threes in a regular season game either like Knecht did. I’m not saying I think Knecht is going to make it here. I’ve been disappointed in his lack of growth too but sometimes all players need is a change of scenery.
everyone's right. i actually don't think summer league changed my mind about knecht, but i DO think teams can now point to it in negotiations as a reason why they're less sure that he's a legit sweetener in a trade. imo, we just wait it out. it's up to him to make the most of whatever opportunities happen here. we can cut him for nothing next year. hall of famer cam whitmore was just traded for 2 2nds. the nba draft is largely a crapshoot.
Ayton went to being in the finals to being on a tanking team. You can easily shift the blame pie there. Same with Smart being "hurt" on a tanking team and a team who's To me, I'm less worried about their response on a good team. But with DK he's not in a bad situation. He's on the Lakers who are always going to be in the hunt to some degree. If he gets in where he fits in here, proving you're a playoff role player will find you a much larger market than whatever the hell he's currently doing.
I don't think there is any questions that summer league hurt DKs value. I mean I was calling his ceiling Allan Houston and Allan Houston didn't become Allan Houston till his 4th year in the league after he spent 4 years in college. That's long time But damn it's summer league he should be both more athletic and a better shooter then basically maybe 1 or 2 players in the court. This is freaking NBA you got to want it and talent alone ain't enough. No one is going to have much expectations if you look you don't belong in the JV squad now
i didn't see every game, but i'll quibble a bit. i know swider put up way better numbers, but watching the games, you could tell he's not going to be an nba player and knecht can be. he just missed a bunch of shots we know he can make (because we've seen him make them against better competition). his shot looked good. he looked to have nba size and athleticism. now, the defense and finishing in traffic were definitely things that were super concerning. all this said, i suppose if i didn't have any history whatsoever, i might have thought he was just a guy out there. it's hard to pretend i haven't seen him light it up in the pros.
