Damn this truly sucks. Hurley was the only candidate I was actually excited for. 70 mil was not going to cut it. We should have offered 100 mil if we really wanted to give him an offer he couldn’t refuse
Same. We kept hearing 100 million and even Woj said we proposed numbers no one could turn down. That's a good deal but definitely not something no one could turn down.
Yea this was the creeping feeling I had over the weekend. This sucks, but back to the drawing board I guess. Also, like Kobe said, if you need to be convinced to come to the Lakers, you ain't it.
Well this sucks. It needed to be an offer he couldn't refuse financially and 6/$70 million is not that. Will try to refrain from bashing the front office for not offering more money until we have more details. I guess we're back to Redick which I am not at all excited about. I really hope we still give Adelman a look now that Hurley is out of the running.
Okay confession time… Maybe this is more of an indictment on me than Hurley… but a week ago if you asked me who Dan Hurley was I would have had no clue. I consider myself a very passionate and relatively knowledgeable basketball and NBA fan, but college sports just have never really captured my attention. Back-to-back college titles and I had no idea who he was. Maybe things change after a three-peat, but if he doesn’t pull that off, I truly don’t think his back-to-back championships is enough to give him the prestige and legacy he is supposedly looking for. Winning one in LA would have made him immortal, winning two in UConn and a lot of people still don’t even know who you are (And this isn’t even me just being salty, I was about to post something along these lines last night lol but decided against it because I didn’t want to put out any negativity in case he did sign with us)
freaking wild these college basketball people really think the Connecticut Huskies are a major brand. If you'd ask a regular person not interested in basketball I bet half of them will believe you are referring to a dog breed. this Hurley guy could win 10 in a row in college and that would still not come close to the exposure you get being the Lakers coach.
my guess is this was all a smoke screen. If it was a question of wanting more money, he would have negotiated, but he didn't.
This is AD's and Lebron's fault that Hurley said no right? FO should've paid Woj or something to cover up the contract amount. Now every single coach is going to want big money to bother coaching us! Is there any hope we can land any marquee superstar after Lebron leaves when the FO can't even land our first choice coach for the second time?
Had my neighbor phone his gardener …. you won’t believe this …. where’s @Mr. Rambis ? They couldn’t promise Kurt would never have “suggestions”.
That's exactly what he wanted. Chilling as a college coach is nothing compared to coaching the Lakers. Simple media coverage is like a night and day difference. He wasn't wired to be "the guy", moving on...
I had my doubts this was a real thing. I was rather shocked at how much the 3-peat angle was being downplayed as a talking point. Guess what it's in the freaking ESPN blurb regarding him staying. If that's our all in offer. Time to sell. Your all in offer can't be that low. Now we're going to see how good our PR team is. It's going to take one hell of a spin to positively pivot back to JJ or whoever else and it not seem like a second place in a beauty contest award. Everyone had talked themselves into the JJ hire/warmed up to it and now all that is undone. I imagine we'll have to compensate for those uncomfortable feels he'll have by upping his offer $1m a year or so. Wouldn't be the Lakers without drama.
He's not Phil Jackson lol he has a good record on college but to offer 100M for 8 years seems too much, especially if we don't know if we'll be able to stay relevant all those years while paying top dollar for a coach who never been in the NBA. I don't get how "inexperienced JJ" with so many years in the NBA being coached by a ton of good HC is so far from this guy that have never been in an NBA locker lol teaching basket in college is a world of difference compared to the pros. I liked the idea of him as it shows we are preparing well, aiming for intriguing solutions for HC and thinking about the future. He may have said no, but I liked the process and that gives me trust that we'll get someone good. As someone quoted Kobe already "if you need to be convinced to come to the Lakers, you ain't it". Hopefully we have a HC soon
I get the sense that the FO may have truly cooled off of JJ after the backlash Also worth noting that Milwaukee was reported as a favorite to land Cassell as Doc’s top assistant, so Milwaukee going for Ham instead may open the door for Cassell to rise up the ranks of our coaching search (or a greater chance he ends up on the staff) Honestly if I had to put money on it, I might bet on Borrego as our next HC
i already had a feeling he'd reject it, but knowing they didn't even offer 100 mil makes it even more obvious why he turned the lakers down. woj again comes off looking like a moron here oh well, a coach was not separating this team from a title
