I think you are missing my point. Jerry Buss had a track record of making decisions that others were scared to make and succeeding. He also surrounded himself with the best minds. Jeanie is not her Father- her track proves it AND instead of realizing this, fixing it by surrounding herself with some of the smartest available, she has Kurt, Linda, and Rob. Huge difference.
And the huge difference still allows for NO credit IF they make the Redick move and it turns out reasonably better than our hires since Phil? Still a "fail" because it was a lucky move and unbelievably dumb move. Damned if she tries to think like Pop with her brothers input and damned if she doesn't remember or even try. Rob too of course knowing the history. I don't give a f*** about Kurt. I'd be surprised if he has more clout than the Brothers in personnel decisions at this point or Rob. It's just an easy bash to beat up on him and his wife being involved .... I get that part.
i think the argument is that they think he can straddle the fence better than other candidates. that is, he has lebron's approval in the short-term, and they think in the long-term he can be a spoelstra/pop type. obviously, the likelihood of the latter is incredibly slim, but i see the angle. also, i think they see a new person as pliable in terms of our weird organizational structure, which was the linchpin in vogel over lue, i think--for different reasons in each case (vogel wanted a high profile job, jj has no experience).
I see. I don’t trust their discernment skills based off of their track record. Your second point makes total sense to me and is a real problem. The ego, collectively, with this group is WILD. It it were someone like Pat Riley in Miami, who has all of the credibility in the world to demand such things, then it would be understandable. We are talking about Jeanie and the Rambii here. Not letting the coach do his job, or having tight restrictions on what he can or can’t do is the polar opposite of how Dr. Buss ran things.
LOL What's going on Suns offered Darwin Ham the position of assistant head coach. According to insider Mark Stein, «Phoenix» recently contacted Darwin Ham. « Sources in the league say that Mike Budenholzer tried to convince Darwin Ham to join him in Phoenix , but Ham who was fired On May 3, for obvious reasons, rejected the offer after two hard seasons at Lakers As a result, « Suns » asked David Fitzdale to remain an assistant coach.
I am all for taking gambles, but if you know anything about professional gambling, you know it's about limiting your risk and taking bets with large upside. for example, I would have taken the gamble on Kyrie, and traded AR and Max for him, because 1) his value was at an all time low. 2)there was a very high likelihood of him performing around Lebron. 3) if the previous happened it would have turned us into instant title favorites. in this case, taking a bet on a coach with no experience because he might be a genius, I personally don't see the upside, plus it's very likely that if it fails, we'll be wasting the last couple of years of Lebron being good. This risk/reward ratio just doesn't work for me. so no, I give no credit to someone betting their entire bankroll on red, even if they happen to win.
And .... completely ignoring the star's input and skin in the game like Riley had. You guys talk all around it and never acknowledge it. As far as Jerry surrounding himself with the "best" and paying for it, he inherited Sharman as GM that Cooke hired 3 years before he bought the team following Pete Newell and Fred Schauss. A cynic I suppose could make the argument he got lucky that HOF player Jerry West, a bit of a nepotism hire in itself for the FO, turned out to be a HOF GM. Now do we really know if Jerry ever really gave Dr Buss an ultimatum of Phil goes or I go? We know he wasn't happy about Phil arriving and quickly dating Buss's daughter. But with regard to Doc Buss always paying for the best talent, just saying, weren't there also many reports that West ALSO was unhappy years later with how much he was being paid for the value he brought to that GM job? And that salary as we like to say didn't hit the bottom line for the Lakers salary cap. MAYBE that was a bigger reason Jerry left?? He saw Magic get taken care of .... right?
you're not wrong. the current group certainly doesn't inspire the same confidence. though i guess back when the riley thing happened there was no reason to be super confident in that group, either, right. that's all hindsight. i just think hiring coaches is very hard, and that a coach's success is determined by a lot of factors, only some of which are controlled by the organization. this is why i don't get super-invested in the coaching searches. the deck is stacked against you (much like when you have the 17th pick in the draft). you do the best you can, and i don't think we're not trying, tbh.
i mean, its really not that surprising that budenholzer wanted ham as an AC considering he worked with ham for years in ATL and milwaukee
Yeah, but everyone was saying that the entire 2018-2019 season. It was only in the last week or so before the trade that the insider reporting flipped and it was us or back to Toronto. He was always going to the Clippers.
Nah man. Just call it like I see based on how these people have been at their jobs over years of time. I totally gave Rob his flowers many times here for the roster he built last summer( only said we needed a bigger big). I’ve even said many times this season how amazed at what LeBron accomplished on offense- and that’s not easy for me. If people are awful at hiring coaches over and over and over again, then they will get called out for it.
