But, but, but... he "cooled off on the Lakers".

That was my thing: do think he's worth 2x JJ? I think JJ will be closer to $50m and Hurley wanted $100 (years aside, just total $). For a cheap, mom and pop shop, even if you're willing to spend this time. Can you justify double? They couldn't and here we are and that whole "search" getting out or letting it get to that point if you weren't willing to go all the way was awful for us. But college coaches generally don't work in the NBA. that's was a very risky gamble to entertain.

Yeah, I was looking for a place to interject one. A spot for a parable just didn't jump out to me.

JJ is worth $50m as a coach? Serious question. Is that the market? Is he that strong a candidate?

I think that might be the higher end of what JJ could get, but it does seem the market is generally going up so even $50 million might not be seen as that much in a few years. I think the new TV deal is projected to be so lucrative that owners should theoretically have more money to spend across the board

Also from a PR standpoint, I think you do have to give JJ a deal on par with the rest of the market to project confidence in him.

A 5 year $50 million deal might send the message “We truly believe in JJ’s coaching potential and see him as someone who can help us build our program long term”

A 4 year $20 million deal might send the message “The field was super dry and while we think JJ has potential, we’re concerned about his lack of experience and want to keep the flexibility to cut him loose sooner rather than later”

Saw some clip on Reddit from some time ago when JJ was on a sports tv show and he was questioning AD's toughness. So he devalues AD's defensive impact and questions his toughness. I can see this going very well once he is hired.

JJ, "Nah AD, that was all just "show" ... you know .... clickbait .... like Stephen A. does. Didn't at all mean it .... we're cool you'll see." :D

i wish this was true. and i just strongly disagree with the notion that the hurley interest wasn't real/full and that jj was #1 the whole time. that's ridiculous, and it's a bunch of writers trying to save some face. you don't make an offer to a secondary candidate prior to your #1 candidate. that's insane. nobody would do this. the counter from an irwin is like "rob is just that stupid". no he's not. stop it.

we're just cheap, and ironically will end up having to overpay our second, third, or fourth choice instead. yay! and we'll fire this guy and overpay another guy at the same time and end up spending the same total amount of money.

whatever. let's just hope we get some good assistants. i resigned myself to jj prior to hurley, so i can do it again, no problem. i probably prefer this route to the retread/unproven assistant route, tbh.

Well... it's true though. That's why guys like Sabonis eat him alive. He got better this year though

C'mon, I know you watch the games like me. Big bulky guys give AD problems. Sabonis, Nurkic, Jokic. Because they pound you 3 times each possession, box out hard, screen hard and are constantly just hitting you with their upper body. It's why so many in this platform, and likely you, want a center to pair with him when facing certain matchups. Which is ok, it's not his strength and I always advocate to play to your best player's strengths.
He's not a player who enjoys physical contact. Even his screens are soft. That's why he prefers to be a 4, because he can bully ball smaller thinner players and not heavy 7 footers.

Again, he got better this season, but everyone remembers games where AD disappears in the 2nd half and let guys outplay him physically. I loved how he responded this year, with many instances demanding the ball down low and fighting back. Hopefully it's something he grew in his game and it's now in the past

It’s probably several pages back at this point, but I recall JSM had posted several video clips of JJ passionately going to bat defending AD as well

I think the impact of JJ’s voting ballots and anything he may have said on sports talk shows is a little overstated. It’s also odd to me that JJ is considered “Lebron’s guy” but so many people are assuming AD doesn’t like him. I don’t think Lebron/Klutch would be pulling for someone that AD has a grudge against. Both Lebron and Klutch have reportedly told the Lakers that AD should be at the forefront of their mind when considering the next coach.

I know you’re kinda joking… but I actually think there is truth to this?

JJ’s job on ESPN is NOT to provide nuanced basketball analysis.

I don’t think JJ the ESPN talking head and JJ the coach would be the same people

I’m not buying what you’re not buying, guys like Shams don’t need to save face, their reputation is rock solid. It’s to me not possible that every single Lakers reporter had this wrong, so I strongly disagree with you. Shams sticks where he was

Here Irwin speaks to Ethan Strauss who wrote an article on this situation, that I can’t read because it’s behind a paywall, but he talks about it here, and he has no dog in this fight, so it’s very much worth a listen, sounds like Woj is quite the character. Also you can not believe Irwin because you don’t like him, but that doesn’t make it true, dude gets death threats regularly for how he covers the team, sports media is kind of a ridiculous place. I also never saw his argument for this being Rob is stupid, at most it was this is a bad look by Rob and another “fail” on his record, not landing “the guy” like with Lue.

    aforementioned death threats

These people put themselves out there, they share what they’re told and what they know, after putting it all together best they can and forming a sort of full a picture from that. I don’t see any trying to save face going on, I see initial correct reporting, a new thing coming out of nowhere that doesn’t turn into anything, and a return to initial correct reporting. Did you not see the Hurley interview clip? Didn’t seem like a guy who wanted to go anywhere, or a guy we’d been after all along.

Irwin had Ethan Strauss on today. Here's his profile if you're unfamiliar:

    https://x.com/SherwoodStrauss?t=RCq1iSRWuLLlaM4Ax0wUXg&s=09

They both have heard one of the reported reasons we cooled on JJ was Linda Rambis. I'm sorry. Come again?! Why does this woman have any f***ing input regarding any decisions about the actual basketball team? How much longer are we stuck with the Rambii? f***ing clown show.

You don't buy the report or that we could be that dumb? Fair. Just wait got another one for you. Here's a Cheeks filler, it will give you time to put your drink down before wanting to throw it by the time you get to the Woike report below that one.

Would've been a solid vet coach with experience to add to a bench. Didn't know he was even available.

If we aren’t a poorly run organization from the top down, we’re certainly not far off. Cheap, Rob doesn’t have an assistant GM so that’s less accountability or people to answer to, people like the Rambii have influence which just should not be, and we don’t have scouts for other teams and players as recently pointed out in an article. Also, again, this guy was never coming, we made an offer and he turned it down. He couldn’t counter with the number that would bring him here if he wanted to come? Hmm, you’d think someone who truly wanted to be here would have done that
