Given the response to our pursuit of him leaking, I think Hurley probably realized that an NBA bag is waiting for him whenever he wants it. He can wait or year or two and get the same money from an NBA team closer to home.

It takes a special person to play/coach for the Lakers

    Some just don't have it

The Lakers are a premier franchise with many championships and for a coach to turn that down there has to be a reason

This is my first post to latch onto to make me feel better. What else can you do. Something's not adding up though about the 100M (makes sense if you really want the guy) .... down to now 6 at 70M ....which does not. Am a gambler. Redick will be better than Ham especially with LeBron backing .... swing for the fences and build a great staff around him. Hurley had me really excited coming in late like that but prior to that I was more interested in JJ than anyone else. Not that it means jack just my opinion.

Brooklyn Nets when they're serious about basketball. Tsai will pay him that king's ransom to get him to leave.

The Lakers became the premier franchise because they maybe had the best owner in all of sports combined with the attraction of living in LA.
Now that's gone and you have the big pieces of what made the Lakers special elsewhere - Riley with Miami, West with Clips.

Lebron is gone soon and it ain't looking good despite the Lakers in the past being the premier franchise (look at the Knicks and the decades of futility with that team)

We were told repeatedly that this would be an offer that no one could refuse.

We just heard an offer that I can think of many reasons someone who already has a great job could easily refuse.

This is very similar to Lue for me. If you’ve done your homework and picked your guy, you go all in for them. This was not that. And it’s one of a million reasons why the front office always finds itself under scrutiny

Trevor Lane says the numbers out there are false. There were incentives built into the contract that would make Hurley even richer.
    Oh well.

11.6 mil in CA is worth less than 11 mil in Kentucky

was this really us being cheap?

If so, that is just disappointing. With the new media deal, that really needed to be factored into our bid.
Before the new contract, that was a competitive bid for a top coach.

to me this is not compelling when the most storied franchise basically is unwilling to outbid a college program

we had our shot, but we got too conservative me thinks

Yeah. Cost of living is why I mentioned that this was really less than what Kentucky offered

Embarrassing but honestly not surprising. I had zero faith in Rob/Jeanie to be "closers". They're tone deaf thinking that $70M over 6 years was going to convince a guy to leave a program where he's highly respected and a legend basically...and obviously SoCal is more expensive then Connecticut, so we should have taken that into account. We're such a loser franchise now it's not even funny...who's our coach now? Once again we're going with our 2nd/3rd/4th choice and it is going to be tough to spin that one with the public...

Yeah I get that the reported offer wasn’t as rich as some of the rumors. And think regardless of what the reality is, at the end of the day results matter so I’m not going to waste too much energy defending Rob/Jeanie. They deserve the backlash.

But my gut still tells me this wasn’t about money.

I think the Lakers could/would have offered more than 6/70. Maybe they even did.

Everyone is fixated on the $100 million number, but that rumor was 8/100. That’s really not much more per year than 6/70.

Maybe both offers were on the table. Maybe the Lakers saw the 8 year offer as more beneficial to them to have him locked up longer term hence the slightly higher per year salary, while Hurley preferred a shorter term deal.

I just can’t wrap my head around this falling apart because 6/70 was Jeanie’s ceiling that she was unwilling to budge past, or that Hurley would have chosen differently if we threw an extra $1million/year at him

Yeah I would be weary of believing everything that is coming out

I love how quickly we go from "joke of an organization" when JJ was the guy, then a well run org when we made the move for Dan and now a joke again, all based on reports (many conflicting) and not actual facts.
There's a report that said Dan left our meeting with a really positive image of Rob and Jeannie.

It is what it is. If this guy wants to coach teenagers instead of the greatest franchise of the world, so be it. Let's focus on who wants to.
This guy never spent a minute in an NBA franchise. He's intriguing but factually he was a shot in the dark, nobody knows what would be and such a large offer is borderline dangerous.
I don't see all this doom

Is the plan really now to go all in on the next Pat Riley? I have a feeling it was AD who is being referred to as not liking JJ’s attitude https://lebronwire.usatoday.com/202...akers-player-doesnt-like-jj-redicks-attitude/

    with the following quote:
“I’m going to talk down. I’m going to talk at you. I know it all type thing when I’ve played against him and I kind of like I get it, but I don’t.”

That has to be AD right? It wouldn’t be Reaves, Rui, or Vando because they are too young to have played significantly against him.

It’s also been reported AD prefers Borrego.

I do think it was AD. Him and/or Reaves.

Reaves/Rui shouldn't have the clout, to be able to derail a coaching hire.

it was obviously AD. Even if he doesn't listen to JJ's podcast I'm sure he'll have heard about the omission from the All-defense choices by now.
