Maybe ….. they’re wanting to not piece meal it and announce the whole staff together? A possibility?

in irwin's piece, he made the point that assistants are often chucked alongside the coach. this is true generally and has been here. unless it's a midseason firing, assistants are tied to HCs. now, is a novice head coach more likely to be fired midseason? maybe. but you can't take the job feeling that way. i feel like brooks or casey will probably take the lead assistant job. i'm sure it's up to jj whom we offer it to. i don't think it's realistic to expect 2 former head coaches with a lot of experience to join the staff, and that's not just being cheap, it's about clout/position, etc.

i feel like jj only took the job last week, and so the process of hiring assistants starts there. it's not extension of the HC search. it's a whole other thing. it's also not super important for the draft and FA, which as jsm says, has to be front and center now.

Weeks have past and we are still in the stages of possibly having interest in talking to someone?

He was in my early list. I like him, didn't think he'd want to leave his existing gig.

That's bad though that we're still in exploratory talks with folks. Who's coaching this weekend?

Think they are hoping you would be free to step in.

Considering the length of time coaches last as members of this Franchise, I’m not surprised in the least.

When JJ was first hired, the word was we were looking to surround him with an elite staff

Feels like that was just fluff and more of a wish then something we had any sense we could realistically pull off. Kind of feels like some of our lead assistant targets might not be too interested so we keep going down the list

Should be expected. It's an out of left field hire.

Lakers brass know elite like I know organic chemistry. I’ve seen lemonade stands run with more elite skill then these bozos.

Is that Handy's job I presume? No matter who they get .... even if the hot new dude with skills and handles to teach .... he won't have that knowledge and aura back to Kobe and other greats.

Rumor Handy is also not interested given we passed over him multiple times without even an interview.

I was always concerned about the thought that guys who interviewed for head coach would be willing to sign up as assistants for the guy who beat them out for the job. Especially a guy like JJ with no experience.

Hopefully we can get some of the guys JJ played under to sign up but it still feels like we are putting feelers out there and haven’t made much progress.

scott brooks, dwayne casey, alvin gentry...lots of folks still out there, right?

i do think this works against the "jj was always going to be hired narrative", though, as i suggested above. if he knew he had a job in the bag, i feel like the assistant coach search would have had some advance work done.

any time we hire someone to do a specialized job, i'm happy. unless it's like, rambis's son or something.

oh god it's going to be rambis's son, isn't it?

Depends. I think any former HC unless they've moved on from that chapter in their life will expect first chair. So maybe Gentry, Stan (if he was in a different place in life) or similar they're good with whatever role as long as the money is right. But Brooks, Stotts, Vaughn, etc. would want that first chair. Maybe there's a gap on role or wages or both.

With every team making hires, I'm getting more and more ancy. Even if it's guys we didn't want, it thins out the candidate pool.

to get nervous, i'd have to know they were guys we prioritized. and maybe they have been. but i don't know. and rightfully so. i'm willing to reserve judgment until we see who signs up.

if it's the jj equivalent of luke's volleyball buddy, i'll be there with the pitchfork.
