If AD is smart...he will waive that trade bonus in a heartbeat so there's less pressure on him. We can really use that extra $4m for another role player that fits around him and LeBron.

Agreed. Can’t lie, I’d be disappointed if he didn’t waive it even in a scenario where we’re not getting a max player. He’s already given up money by forcing his way out of NO and forgoing the super max, yet he’ll probably more than make up for it in additional endorsement revenue. Might as go all the way and do what he can to help us retool this summer because this will be our only opportunity really to use cap space in the rest of Lebron’s championship window. That $4 million could go a long way in adding role players.

I'll be disappointed too especially because a large contingent of us just assumed he would waive the trade kicker to make it easier for us to get more help...

There really should be a rule against players getting a trade kicker after they demand to be traded.

Rule number 1 when it comes to money. Never count another man's money.

    werd.

also, we got AD. asking him to take less cash (or asking kawhi or whomever) seems a bit entitled, no? 29 other teams wish AD forced a trade to them (lolboston). let's enjoy it.

The kicker doesn't matter unless we use our 32m cap space to absorb AD's deal.

Forget the max slot for a second...Zo, BI, Hart, Moe and Bonga aggregate to 21.4m that can bring in a max of 26.9m in salary. AD without his trade kicker is 27.1m in salary. We'd be 200k short.

But if we trade for AD after we sign a max to 32m, 900k opens up after Kawhi (or any max guy) fills that empty roster charge and we can use that new wiggle space to absorb some of AD's contract plus he will be able to get 700k of his 4m trade kicker with the deal only needing Zo, Bi, Hart, Moe and Bonga, enabling us to spare JJ.

The trade kicker only opens up 4m of potential cap if we trade for AD before we attack free agency, which is what that 23m - 27m number is coming from. Also if we use the signed 4th pick in August to complete the deal, Zo/BI/Hart/signed 4th aggregates to bring in 31.4m...so we'll have 4.3m to potentially bring back in additional contracts along with AD's deal (27.1m) or AD can exercise his entire trade kicker and be eligible for a larger bag when extension time comes. Either way, in August Moe, Bonga and JJ won't have to be involved in the deal.

Interviewing in the past was my favorite part of the show. Asking questions that matter is important.

You shouldn't even be able to use your kicker if you are the one demanding a trade and go to your team of choice. Its not like he is taking a paycut if he was in NOLA, but he just isn't getting a boost

Yeah look, he can take the kicker. I’m thrilled he forced his way here and it’s worth it to me if that means he takes an extra $4 mil. from our cap space. And he’s 100% entitled to it. A contract’s a contract. But my point is that trade kickers are there to disincentive teams from trading players. It’s essentially a penalty. So if a player is the the one DEMANDING the trade, and the reluctant team goes ahead and complies with the demand despite not wanting to, that would seemingly negate the point of the penalty. No?
