Those who passed on Garland will regret it.

Maybe Griffins crewing us saved ourselves by going with some depth instead of maxing Kemba

Looks like the deal could expand according to Bobby's sources.

My question is, why cooperate? Why would the Pelicans open up any avenue that would allow us to build a Superteam that would make their picks (the ones from us) worth less? Right now, we are one Lebron or AD injury away from teetering on the lottery. If you add Kawhi, an injury probably still leaves us with a pick in the 20's.

Because why do they really care? Look at their roster. They're full of kids already. The picks are now and have always been mostly superfluous. They've got a dozen picks. They need us to play ball as much as we need them.

Also, we don't HAVE to include them in dumping these players and we're going to do it anyway, what does it hurt to see if all three teams can't gain a little extra?

You'd have to think this was an element of the original negotiations. Rob knows the cap. I'm sure they worked out an additional pick swap or whatever as part of NO agreeing to allow us to work this out with a 3rd team if they found a taker for the 4th pick. No way this is just an "Oh, by the way..." type thing Rob's trying to toss in after the fact. He's not that stupid.

IF I told you you can have the future pick in the late teens or the early twenties, you'd take the late teens. The third team? Not sure who that team is. We're going to have to give something else to get them to take our contracts since we have zero leverage.

We absolutely have leverage. It's our pick. :D Would we, at this point, take our ball and go home? Probably not, but would they either? It's our pick we're all messing with. The Pelicans technically just broke a league rule by trading an asset they don't have.

I’m grasping here, but maybe to maintain a good working relationship with the Lakers and Klutch going forward? Griffin doesn’t seem petty and vindictive, even if he’s working for a woman who is, he just seems like a good GM.

I would like to think this deal was already on the burner among other scenarios. So we've already been talking to the potential 3rd team about what ways we can "touch" each other with guys we have to send out to salary match.

Again we will likely sign the max guy first and then sign off on the trade after. So 32m in cap will be off limits from the AD trade.... meaning we had to get off of Moe, Bonga and JJ to salary match AD instead of any of his salary being absorbed into cap space.

I don't like how the deal was 1st leaked with Zo,Bi,Hart, our picks...cause it made it seem that the 4th pick would be aggregated otherwise there wasn't enough salary to match for AD unless it was partially absorbed into our space. I'm guessing Moe,Bonga,JJ were left out of the leak cause they were not likely going to end up in a Pels uni, rather they would end up on the mystery 3rd team that was going to take them in along with the 4th.

So I don't think any of this is happening in real time. I'm sure now that the Pels agreed to ATL, we will just get back in touch with them and try to get one of their assets, if not that 35th pick that was reported as part of the deal.

This is the front office that surrounded Lebron with bad-shooters and head cases last year. I'm not sure they put that much forethought into this deal this year.

How much of it last year was Magic and how much was Rob? I can't accept that Magic signed all those bad matches for this team. Rob was invested in the plan, as crap as it was.

I’m going to go ahead and say it feels like it was a LOT of Magic, without trying to really defend Rob at the same time. The whole anti-Warriors thing seems very much like an old school plan that Magic would cook up and think was brilliant. Rob’s job seemed to be more of the guy making the money work, and telling his ridiculous stories to make the signings look good. Now, this can be proven wrong. If this offseason we go out and sign Melo, Rose, Crawford, Rondo, KCP, etc, it will be a sign to me that Rob is just as clueless as he’ll have assembled another team of “names” that aren’t actually good anymore and/or are terrible fits.

Wait, I’m confused. Don’t you mean “f*** you Woj” for all his misreporting that the Lakers were clueless about the timing aspect of this and we’re scrambling the last couple days? Maybe even a “screw you” to Ramona for saying on The Jump that Rob called NO back after he’d realized this mistake too, which seems like complete nonsense now?

I'm not really disagreeing. Rob absolutely got bent over with Griff/Trajan in that we had the leverage that AD/Klutch gave us, yet traded literally everybody other than Kuz. This deal lacked finesse. Had there been a mandate that the deal gets completed in August, I would have been a whole lot more happy cause then at the very least we retain cheap assets like Moe, Bonga and JJ to help round the roster.

Now we mortgaged our future picks AND gave up the farm. It wasn't ideal, especially when we had the leverage.

All that being said, if Kawhi signs and we have AD, then who really cares about our future picks or Moe, Bonga, JJ...and we still got to keep Kuz.

Time will tell, but you won't get an argument out of me that our cap sheet could have been handled with alot more finesse.
