Gotcha. Oh, no; it's not contingent in any of those ways as far as I know.

to answer fish, I think next year the protection goes down to top 3, and maybe same the year after that. if it's not conveyed at that point, it becomes completely unprotected.

thus, it's in the lakers' best interest to suck HARD this year, and then to sign an impact free agent (the list reads: rondo or gasol) next year.

I still can't get behind tanking. I know from logical point of view it seems to makes sense , but I could never respect a team that is tanking. And if I can't respect them, I can also not root for them.

Besides, I am completely sure we can rebuild within the next couple of seasons even without tanking. I also still believe that the main factor in the disaster that we have had to endure for the past 2 seasons and seemingly will have to this season again were/are the fricking injuries. The bad luck has to stop at some point, right? When it does, we will be automatically a lot better. There is some young talent, Kobe looks very good for his age and we finally have a coach I like (although so far he hasn't really impressed).

I know many here believe we cannot sign marquee free agents without more young (drafted) studs. But I agree with real (I think he was the one who mentioned this somewhere) - if the Lakers can build the brand of an organization that takes care of its stars, that combined with the great history, city and MONEY the Lakers are also known to spend if necessary should be enough to lure the players we want.

If the lakers tank, meaning play even worse than they are able to, this team would be legendary bad. That's also not a good way of convincing the stars of this league to join this team if you ask me, even if we end up with the No. 1 pick and add a great prospect.

I don't think we're tanking... yet. We're just not a very good basketball team, even if healthy.

Not saying we are, I was referring more to all the members who think we should than to the current play of our team. I completely agree this team is bad. The loss of Nash (yeah, I'm always overly optimistic and hoped he would actuall contribute some this season) and Randle destroyed any chance we had of being competitive

Yeah, actually that is right. 5 this year, 3 the next two, then unprotected. Good looking out.

So it's in our best interest to do it now because we're rarely faced with the opportunity to be this bad. Next season I have a hard time believing whatever changes we make will lead to an 0-5 start.

Thanks for looking into this. I just hope this doesn't end up meaning people are gonna root for the tank for three consecutive seasons. I guess dropping it down to top 3 prevents that, but you never know with some people.

Of course. If we're doing it - now is the time. We're bad anyway. Might as well use that opportunity to get another young player with potential. He and Randle should be enough to attract free agents. Add people like Davis and Swag and we're back.

I think this is exactly right. I thought the Lakers would be bad this season, like 32 wins bad. Now it looks like they could be in the 15-20 range for the first time ever. This may NEVER happen again, and the one silver lining would be if we could take advantage of this. As much as it sucks.

So pretty much, sorry because I wasnt this aware of the trade. Phoenix essentially gets our 1st round picks for the next 3 years as well?

Funny article, and no I don't think it was intended to be taken completely serious. I do not think we are outright tanking, the FO didn't sign Nick Young to a long deal and expect him to be out immediately, or expect our prize rookie to go down for the season game 1, or have Nash not make it through preseason. We just suck, some of it is bad luck, a lot of it is a weak roster.

Personally I wanted to go the route of guys like Lowry/Stephenson and Monroe over swinging and missing on stars, but that's not our plan apparently. So, it seems we might get that top 5 pick this season and once again swing for Gasol, Rondo, then Durant or whoever else. I guess if Randle develops and we ever land guys like that at least it's possible we shoot right back into contention. I guess at least as a franchise we aim for that rather than doing things like the Sixers or one of these other franchises that is constantly stuck in the middle of the pack.

If we get a top 5 pick, I'd look for it to be moved for another All-Star. We tried to trade our lotto pick from last season for Klay Thompson and GS smartly rebuffed; however, given the fact that we're all in for 'names', that may be a golden opportunity to give you a player that will help you win now expediting this rebuild, easing the transition after Kobe retires, and pairing up another young stud up with Randle.
