What's the latest on this Melton kid? I keep hearing that he's "expected", to sign here...eventually.

i would argue we did? this was definitely an either/or situation with ayton/laravia or DFS. there was no path to having both.

re: grimes: actually, that does make sense for both teams, i think.

Quentin Grimes is similar to Mathurin. I'd say Mathurin is the better scorer and Grimes is a better defender and 3pt shooter. But then Grimes went on that tear to end last season so maybe his scoring needs to be reevaluated too. I also think Philly is more likely to trade with us than Indy.

The 76ers are at 185m salary without resigning Grimes and he reportedly wants 25m per. That would put them over the second apron. Maybe we can swoop in and offer them Gabe, Shake, Knecht and 2x swaps or a heavily protected first and we could sign him to 19-20m per in the first year.

They get to cut Shake for 3m and add Gabe and Knecht for 15 which puts them just above the 1st Apron. Gabe is useful for their bench as a backup to Maxey and allows McCain to play SG. I imagine they'd like to give playing time to their 3rd pick who's also a SG.

    Maxey / Gabe
    McCain / Edgecome
    Oubre / Knecht
    PG / Watford
    Embiid / Drummond

They don't really need more SG's but they could use wings so I'd be willing to send them Vando and the first as well. I could see them biting if they value Knecht's shooting for a team that lacks it.

He's unrestricted now though right? Do we we have the cap space for a S&T? How does that affect our financial flexibility for the upcoming season?

I don’t think they’ve tabled an offer or made him unrestricted yet and he hasn’t received any other offers.

I’m not Vash so I could be wrong, however from what I understand they’re below the first cap and so are we, so both sides can aggregate players in a trade. Technically nothing would be changing for us financially, we’d send on 18.5m and take back ~20m. If anything we might use less of the BAE to sign Melton.

For Philly; they get assets for a player they’re probably going to have to let go because of their salary cap and logjam at the 2 spot. When they traded for him, they didn’t know they’d get Edgcome at 3.

I like this. But I think Hayes is ahead of Kleber in the reg season. Later in the year, I see Kleber taking the backup spot yeah
I think we are waiting to see if we free a roster spot via trade before cutting Milton. We have until 20 July.

I think he's ours. And we told him that no later than 20 of July he's signed no matter what. So until there, either via trade or cutting Milton, he signs the same day.
    Send this to Rob

I'm still interested in Josh Green. He fell into the tanking teams where DFS was, where they look worse because they have to do more things. He's exactly the type of guard/wing we need

We could throw Gabe and Knecht. They save a year and we get a guy that is on the 2027 FA plan, if it exists
Having Melton, Green, Grimes and LaRavia off the bench would be a luxury. That's a contending team

only snag in svtzr's plan that i see is i'm pretty sure you can't trade shake and then cut him--his salary becomes guaranteed if he's traded. it's an old loophole that's since been closed, iirc. so to make that work, we'd have to find a third team to eat that contract for something, maybe cash if we have any left over? we also have to be mindful of whatever number we promised melton (if we did), as we'll need that space under the apron after such a deal.

i would have agreed, but i just don't like his trajectory right now. he looks like he should be a good defender, but the results just aren't there, and his offense has never fully come around. if he was a vet min rehab project, i'd be all over it, but he's under contract for two more years at mle money. we just let DFS walk because he was going to compromise flexibility, so i don't see us doing this.

Shake has roots in Philly, they can keep him.

You were saying the same about DFS and he had an immediate impact. We need quick guards, he's 24(!!). He didn't forget how to play, he's just in a bad context. Happens with most role players. Neismith, the OKC ones, Ariza, DJJ, Bruce Brown, etc. And here he has a clear role that suits him. He can give us solid 15/20 minutes. That was one of the strengths of Indiana and OKC. He also already played with Luka.

If it goes that bad, which I don't see, he's an expiring next year.

    they have to agree.

i said DFS was declining, and he was/is. i'm saying josh green has never arrived. he's 5 years in. if we had a bad contract to dump, maybe, but i'm with the FO in terms of not doing that stuff right now. any contract extending beyond this year needs to be someone we KNOW is a keeper, imo.

if there was a josh green type who wasn't on an mle level contract, i'd definitely want to take a look.

Devin Carter would be a good acquisition. Super athletic, excellent rebounder, good three-point shooter, excellent screen navigator.

He and Luka are friends. He can come here and then the two of them can start a business together in Porto Montenegro or something… we can make it happen. ;)

Hmmm. I'd take Vucevic! Stretch 5 that can board at a high level, and sets excellent screens? Vucevic over Kleber and that, ain't even a serious discussion. Now you can absolutely dump Maxi and Gabe, for a perimeter defender. Vuc can play with Ayton or Hayes against two big lineups too.

    Manna from heaven!!!(Rob)

    Agree to disagree.
They are both slowish, old school post players who love the mid range shot.
At least nobody has ever questioned his love for the game.

Oh I’ll take Vuc off the bench for sure. But I bet he goes to Indy or GSW where he can start
