i floated cam johnson plus the 8th pick for the 2nd pick and keldon johnson a while back, and i still think it makes sense for both teams. especially if the spurs' plan is to get kd and thus win now.

as you say, harper makes more sense as a trade-up target for bkn than guys in the toronto/houston range (who are directly AFTER bkn's current pick). they're sure that there will be two guys they want in the late lotto right now?

i'm a fears fan, btw. i think his shot will come around and he could be a garland type.

 

The only other play i can think of is that's phase one of a two part plan. If they think Bailey is T-Mac 2.0 do they think that 8 + 9 or 10 and filler can get them up to #3. Morey is an asset whore... so maybe?

 

yeah, but morey likes collecting and then spending draft picks, not actually making them, right? so maybe he then moves the later picks as part of a package that turns PG's husk into a guy he thinks helps them get back into contention next year?

but that's a lot of moving parts...

 

I don't like being the Ainge defender lol, but I don't know that he cares about that. Ainge does whatever he thinks is best for his team, ruthlessly. We saw it with the Isaiah Thomas thing, which he was right about. We heard all year that it would take multiple firsts just to swallow Russ's contract, and yet he was the guy that ultimately took Russ. And all the stuff about him wanting to win every trade - well, yeah? Shouldn't that be what every GM wants lol. In hindsight he was absolutely right not trading Brown or Tatum for Kawhi or PG.

I think he obsesses over winning more than he hates us, so if we offered a deal he thought was a net win for the Jazz he'd do it.

 

was he? i mean, everyone knew not to pay thomas, but i think his coldness there played a huge role in him not landing AD, which was a major long-term plan for them.

the goal is to strike a deal that everyone's happy with, not to swindle people, which is what the gm-idolizing fans think it's about, imo. a gm who swindles people finds themselves on the outside looking in quickly, imo. it's how pritchard got ousted in portland--he used to brag about pulling things over on other gms, and nobody liked it.

overall, though, i generally agree with you that ainge will work with us if he feels like it benefits his team more than working with someone else.

 

i agree with this, as evidenced by the westbrick trade. but i think the luka trade would've been too much for him and he wouldn't have agreed to be a part of it if he'd known who the lakers were acquiring. i just can't see ainge agreeing to help his most hated rival acquire a superstar talent to set themselves up for the future

 

Maybe, but they got two second round picks for literally nothing. It's not like we and the Mavs wouldn't have been able to find someone else to absorb JHS and receive two free seconds.

I thought KD should have signed with them in 2016. There would have been way less backlash than going to the Warriors. They could have had KD, Kawhi and Aldridge, which is a little weird but they could move Aldridge pretty easily. He's back near Austin where he went to college. It would have made the West much more interesting the next few years. I'll never understand KD being surprised at the backlash from going to the Warriors. How could someone be that incredibly naive.

With KD coming in, maybe they'd part with McDaniels instead of DDV as they need the guard help? Their front court would be KD, Randle, Gobert. We'd probably have to send a 1st to PHX and our pick swaps though.

Sorry for the 3 posts in a row, but any trade for KD from the Wolves starts with Randle, so most likely they'll play KD at PF with Gobert next to him that's an excellent pairing. So most likely you're not getting McDaniels as he'll be their defensive 3. It's a great team with Conley, Antman, McDaniels, KD & Gobert.

I think they let Reid and NAW go. We could maybe just do a Rui, Shake + 1st for Reid. That would total a starting salary of 22-23m. If he wanted more, we could always swap out salaries to get him to 25-30m.
