I don’t agree with this personally, but it’s a logical argument and I can’t fault it.

There was probably a good chance in trading with the Hornets before the Bridges thing. Now its less of an urgency to free up cap space for them while they rethink future plans.

I'm just speculating.. it's all fun. I don't think we intend on moving Russ honestly. Beverley was acquired through a trade, he could be traded immediately. I doubt that was in the plans either, unless somebody preferred Pat over Talen.

Maybe Nunn, Gabriel and a 2nd rd pick or 2 might snag something. The future FRP have no money value in a trade. A 2nd rd pick is worth around 5 million I believe. So that's maybe 13-14 million. Now tack on 1 future FRP and we're still in reach of Turner. It's a long shot..I know... but I haven't quite given up on keeping Westbrook , and still aquiring Turner just yet.

I think you’re right about Beverly. The restriction that the Jazz had was that they couldn’t aggregate him with other players they received in the TWolves trade until a certain date, but otherwise were free to trade him. Since we didn’t get anyone else with Beverley, I assume then we could trade him at any time if we wanted.

For your other idea, I don’t think second round picks have any monetary value in a trade though. So if we assume we don’t want to move Beverley, I don’t think we currently have enough tradable salary to match anything significant.

Here’s an idea though. Do the Utah trade while keeping one FRP. See how that team fares for a few months. Then once our summer FA signings become trade eligible, I think we suddenly can scrounge together enough salary to match Turner (or another impact player in that salary range).

I haven’t quite done the math, but I’d have to think something like Walker, Nunn, Jones would be close enough to Turner’s salary. Add the FRP that we preserved from the Utah trade into that package, and I think Indiana might bite.

Losing Nunn would hurt our PG depth, so maybe you sign Schröder soon before we get to that point. So after it all shakes out, we have:

    Beverley / Schröder
    Reaves / Fournier / Christie
    James / Reddish / Brown
    Davis / Bogdanovic / Toscano-Anderson
    Turner / Bryant

I'd have to look it up or get Abeer to chime in here, but I believe that current year draft picks, count as salary ,but future ones don't. I think we have a 2nd rd pick of our own this season.

I would have to see who actually got moved in a Mitchell trade first. But yeah..adding Turner, Bogdanovic, Fournier and Schroder...that's a haul..no doubt.

Edit.. From what I've read so far, draft picks don't count as salary period. Kills my idea..

afaik, picks have no monetary value until the contract is signed by the player. so not even directly after the draft does the player have monetary value in trade. for example, draft rights to 2nd rounders overseas have no monetary value.

I thought there was a cap hold for draft picks, but maybe it's first round only? Maybe that went away with the G League situation.

you may be right, but that doesn't translate to trades, i don't think. they have no value in trade.

this technicality doesn't matter because FA always opens after the draft, so the draftee has a cap hold, but the pick slot itself does not.

Yeah, I think Bridges being a piece of s*** really screwed us. I think the Hornets were willing to get a Russ trade done quick, would have given us a lot more leverage against other teams.

Whoah! Did not see that coming. Well I assume that means trading Russ to Utah is dead.

I like trades that come out of nowhere.
Teams are giving away draft picks like they're Arby's coupons. Crazy

Looking at the Cavs salaries, I wonder if this ends up just being Kevin Love and the picks for Mitchell. If so, I’d take Love after his inevitable buyout. Front court would be crowded, but he had a resurgence in Cleveland last year.

    EDIT: Well nevermind then…

Honestly that’s a pretty good trade for Utah compared to the NY offer
