I think retiring a number is stupid. They can honor him in other ways.

If it pisses of lebronze, I’m for it

    11 championships in 13 years

probably the actual GOAT, except society seems to glorify scoring more, offense over defense, etc

Kobe had 2 numbers retired. LLLLL can now never match that. Such a sad day

Bill wore a Lakers jersey to honor Kobe. We can get give Bill a pass on that one.

Clarification on Jovan’s “report” that the Lakers are now offering both first round picks.

Not sure I follow the logic in that second tweet about Brooklyn possibly being incentivized to tank this year. That would be a good rebuttal to the point I was trying to make a few pages ago where I was skeptical of Brooklyn’s interest in our trade package because I assumed they’d still want to remain competitive. Maybe I overlooked something about their pick/swap situation.

But yeah, pretty much confirms what some of us thought; Jovan isn’t reporting anything. He doesn’t seem to have any actual inside info. This has all just been speculation.

Really seems to me that Jovan made his rise to fame when he was covering the Clippers because he had Trez as a source, and Trez was willing to spill a lot of tea. That helped him get a job covering us, but now that Trez is gone, I don’t know if Buha has many sources that are actually privy to the inner workings of the team. Sounds more like he just knows sources around the league and on the periphery of the organization that feed him more speculation.

The ironic thing about the KD situation is the media are now saying that KD issued the "them or me" demand regarding Nash and Marks to create behind-the-scenes discord to lower the Nets asking price for him.

The irony is KD is lowering his offering price from teams who don't want some 34-year-old spoiled thug coming in and issuing demands and causing general dissent. His only chance is a championship-right-now team. No middling team or building team wants a prick like that. Even most contending teams don't, it seems, like Phoenix.

Bill with the 6 retired league wide .... maybe .... except for all the other players who maybe have had and wanted the number all their basketball playing years. But to go as far as a C-Bag clover logo on the Lakers hardwood floor, that sucks. Probably was made up for the series but would not doubt Auerbach capable as depicted in Winning Time of being a D*** to Jerry Buss when he acquired the Lakers and dropping a cigar on the floor at The Forum and stomping it out. :swear: :p

I get it, it's an american sports thing to honor the biggest legends of each sport, and I have nothing against it, but too much is too much.

in european soccer, there would be fans rioting if they told most teams fans they would have to carry a symbol of their bitter rivals on their own pitch, regardless of the respect for the player who passed.

I actually know Jovan personally - I can tell you this much, he's a lot more plugged in than he even leads on.

best i can figure is this:

basically, it's about the fact that houston is also tanking. so if they're bad this year, worst case is swapping down a couple spots to houston. i get it from that angle. though i'm not sure it incentivizes tanking so much doesn't disincentivize it heavily?

weird thing is i believe he knows people. but what i'm saying--and jovan is saying, actually--is that he's very rarely actually reporting things. he's giving his vibes based on things he does know, but isn't reporting.

I think that's fair to say - he's not actually reporting anything, yet.

Oh I’d be fine with Bill’s number or name on the floor and/or lakers jerseys. He has always had my respect as a player.

But I’ll be damned if I accept a shamrock on anything Lakers related.

Suffer not the mark of the beast!

The Bill Russell finals mvp award was a nice tribute, plus he was alive to see it. I just don't like retiring a number to the whole league, then it's going to open the door for others , what about Jordan, Kareem, Magic, Bird, Kobe etc.. leave the numbers alone unless a franchise chooses to retire their own number.
