The question is, does Simmons make the Hawks more of a legit title contender? Would that trade even make the Hawks better than Philly?

maybe not. if you subscribe to the theory that your title chances are only as good as your best player (and basically, only the 2004 pistons present a great argument against this), then neither atl or philly has a chance regardless.

I'm on the fence with Embiid, if they added those three players and only give up Simmons? I think Philly could be legit if Embiid balled out.

embiid's on the fringe for me as a 1A star. if AD isn't it, embiid isn't it. and honestly, AD is a better defender all-around.

but yeah, in theory, assuming embiid isn't hurt (which he always is--again, AD detractors take note), he could lead a competent supporting cast to the finals. he's definitely a talent.

Clearly not. But that's more on Trae, as he is far of the top tier. But the Suns made it without a top 10 superstar, so you never know. Legit title contenders need to have one of those 10 (prob 7).

But I would do it if I was Atlanta, for whatever package. Because it also attracts FAs. They would neep to ship Capela though, and I don't see the Sixers taking him, so there's that to make it more difficult to happen

I’d argue cp is one of those guys.

Opinions will vary on it but I do think the injuries in the playoffs elevated CP3/Booker into that top 10 last season no matter where we might have slotted them beforehand. We will see how it plays out this year.

DAMN, that would've been something. Three obstacles with that though: 1) Dame doesn't want to be on a team this good. 2) We didn't have the assets to get him. 3) Portland would never send him here, not even if he pulled a Simmons or said he'd only accept a trade to LA.

He's by favorite non Laker though. I just don't think it's in the cards. Maybe he'll Melo it and come here at 37 and surprise me.

Still need someone to explain to me how an alpha guy like that with his obvious great offensive skills can’t find it in him to be a good defender?

dame wants to do what giannis did. the only problem is that he doesn't have nearly the same quality of talent surrounding him

i don't expect him to leave portland unless they go into a full rebuild

Also, small guards don’t really win titles as the main guy. The last one to do it if we are going off like finals MVP was Tony Parker, and before him Isiah Thomas. Even when the Warriors won that first time (to a Cavs team with no Irving or Love), Iguodala got MVP. It’s nice of Dame to stay loyal, I guess, but he’s not gonna win there.

As a former basketball player, I can tell you this: people often say that "defense is about effort". However, players who are not great defenders aren't necessarily lazy. Someone like Melo, for example, who spends a lot of time working on his game is definitely not lazy. Some people simply don't have great court awareness on that end and their defensive IQ is not high. In this respect, Melo is almost the opposite of Ron Artest. Artest had amazing defensive IQ, great instinct and quick hands. But offensively, Artest would take some of the worst, "low IQ" shots you've ever seen and his offensive game wasn't very smooth at all. Not many people are superstars and equally capable on both ends of the floor. Jordan was, so was Kobe (especially early in his career), LeBron and Duncan. Other top 10 players were usually focusing on one end of the floor, and that's, you guessed it - offense.

C'mon man, half of Warriors dinasty is because of Curry.
But I get your point, though I believe it relies on the supporting cast. Dame never had a legitimate team to be a contender.

Portland would laugh and hang up. Hell I’d trade Russ for 2 of KCP, Kuz, and Harrell back.
