Reposting my question. Must have been overlooked:

Can someone explain what a buyout means exactly? Did Memphis pay off his entire contract and say ‘later, Do,’ or do they agree on a lesser amount, and go their ways?

And is he then off Memphis’s books completely, cap space and all?

I'm not sure what happens in terms of cap space, but as to your first question, typically the two sides agree on a lesser amount and go their separate ways.

Rondo makes zero sense to me if he expects to get minutes.
We're loaded at the Guard position.. Nunn & Monk both need to be in the rotation over Rondo.

A buyout usually occurs when a player is in the final year of his contract, often a lucrative contract, and the player’s employer must decide whether to continue to pay the player’s salary for the rest of the season (whereby the player becomes a free agent that summer and can join a new team) or to proceed with a quid pro quo in which the team cuts their losses and releases the player from their contract and pays a discounted salary.

Rondo played less than 15 minutes for the Hawks, and he would play fewer minutes here with some DNPs. We have to play Russ most of the time (which is 30 minutes every night), and Nunn is three times the player Rondo is right now. Now, Rondo is a very smart guy - he knows what the situation is here. There is zero chance he can beat Nunn for minutes, he's not crazy. He'd only come for some sporadic minutes and player coaching. Vogel definitely had him help coach when Rajon was hurt.

It's a great move just so Rondo can be the Westbrook whisperer. Especially since Kidd isn't on the roster to take the task of being PG coach that other PG's will listen to.

This is my transcript of the Lebron/Rondo conversation today on this upcoming season on how to help Westbrook:
Shoot the set shot Russ (don't shoot the pull up jumper)
Don't take the quick 3 Russ (don't shoot the pull up jumper)
Pass the ball to Lebron Russ and he'll get it back to you (don't shoot the pull up jumper)
Use the lob Russ (don't shoot the pull up jumper)
Post up Russ (don't shoot the pull up jumper)

i'm pretty sure rondo is well aware he'll barely see the floor if he signs in LA

but i still don't see why they'd bring him back with nunn here. go out and get another wing or big man instead

If I understand correctly, IE, Russ should not shoot pullup jumpers?

Rondo will get his minutes in the playoffs. Y'all are forgetting he turns into an all-star performer in the playoffs.

He saved the Clippers against Dallas with his defense. Kind of faded the rest of the two series as Reggie Jackson suddenly morphed into all star

This is, indeed, possible. But in that case he should be saved for the playoffs instead of playing any meaningful minutes during the regular season - which, for him, always results in injured wrist, hand or broken finger. Every single time.

His decision making was always questionable, what can I say...

I never understood why he thinks he's a high volume shooter from outside. He wants to shoot between 4 and 6-7 threes a game, when he should take 2. Wide open ones, at that.

Rondo barely played against Utah and the Suns last year after having a big role against Dallas: didn't hear anyone state he complained or was a bad influence. The dude is older and he's clearly setting himself for a Dudley flight path into a coaching career if he wants to go that route

Meh...Rondo wouldn't make any waves here. He sees an easy ring coming. That's why Dudz was so emotional about not getting a contract. Easy rings don't often come around late in your career or ever really.

the assumption here is that we will keep Rondo on ice until playoffs, right? then we unleash him at a critical time (closeout, knockout, head butt, etc)... i can't imagine we promised him any sort of playing time, especially given the guard rotation

Come on folks...who do you really think is beating a healthy Lebron, AD and Russ 4 out of 7 games?
