After he opted out, the 1+1 is the only move that made financial sense. To sign a long term deal after opting out, would have netted him less money than if he just opted in and signed an extension. By doing 1+1, he can opt out again next year and eligible for an even more lucrative deal since he’ll have accrued 10 years of experience.

But I almost wouldn’t be surprised if Kawhi has secretly taken some private meetings with some other teams ever since he opted out. Not with the intent to sign with them now, but moreso as a pre-emptive meeting to discuss the framework of how they could possibly sign him next off-season.

So I wouldn’t be surprised if Kawhi basically has the Clippers pay him max money while he rehabs this year, and then next summer he ditches them to go elsewhere.

    Snake gonna snake

Kawhi is playing a dangerous game. He hasn’t been the healthiest player lately. He just needs to look at Boogies situation to see how his plan could go south with one more big injury.

Kwame was a bad player...but only because he was taken #1 in the draft. He had an OK career if he was the 25th pick in the draft. It's not his fault someone took him first.

Also, not only was he abused by his father, but MJ drafted him #1 and proceeded to play for the Wizards where he berated Kwame nonstop, 24/7 in practice and games. Kwame was a 18 year old kid who had the second greatest player of all time screaming his ear off. His confidence was eviscerated.

I don't think there's any risk involved, as he's probably not going to play next year. He's going to opt out of the 1+1 next summer and sign a $246 million 5-year contract. The only way his plan could go south is if he decides to play next year, but he won't. He knows, and his uncle knows, what's at stake.

Things can happen health wise and they don’t have to be on the court. He could get hit by a car tomorrow.

True, but you could say younger players signing shorter contracts (ie Nunn, Monk) are taking a higher risk since they haven't even seen their payday yet. Kawhi's career earning would be $230M by the end of this 1+1 and I guess he could lose $80M-ish if he does get hit by a car, earthquake or tsunami this season.... not really a risk imo.

He has already made north of $150m in career earnings with another $70-80m in this contract unless he opts out. If something really terrible happens, he'll be ok.

Sure he'll miss out on $200m more, but it's still nothing to sneeze at.

Sure Kawhi has made a ton money, he could lose out on a ton of money too. He’ll be rich either way. Losing out on 100+ million dollars isn’t smart anyway you look at it. s*** happens everyday and he better hope it doesn’t happen to him.

Yes, he has more money than several generations should be able to spend, but what’s really gained by holding the organization’s feet to the fire at this point?

He lives and plays at home and makes the most he can make. If it’s about legacy, he already screwed it by signing with the wrong la team.

As a fun fact, remember the Lakers did try to get Westbrook a while back, and the interest was mutual on Westbrook's end. See my post about it here (not sure how to quote it). Obviously it didn't work out then, but finally both sides are united!!

As much as i hate to say it (if the claps when a title I'll be super upset) you're wrong. If he gets a title with the claps that will further his legacy especially since they've never won a title. He will have something in common with LeBron and won a title with 3 different teams. He's already been finals mvp twice. If the claps win a title with him leading the way the story writes itself much to the dismay of the Laker faithful

yeah, not sure how i can be "wrong" in this case. or you can be. i disagree with this opinion.

and it doesn't matter, as you're sort of making my larger point: does kawhi changing teams again help further this goal? not unless he joins a super team, which undermines this particular goal.

to me, it's a clear vote of non-confidence in the organization in that he'll put leverage over them ahead of 100 million dollars.

both our top guys took the money this last time, and people took it only as a vote of non-confidence in themselves. i took it as they were happy where they are, so why not protect against worst-case scenarios?

Wow good call back then. Of course RW was upset, as we just became aware of several days ago by some new reporting, this is a major reason for Westbrook to hate Leonard since he brought up the original idea to him of himself leaving OKC to come join him, and hate his bro in OKC, George who did it instead per Snake’s request.

Additional “fun facts” were the sky is falling comments about KCP and Rondo and West working with the Clippers instead of Lakers where we only had Magic and Rob, and lots of typical other panics ahead of our championship season.
