he was a one and done, iirc.

it was funny bc the word was he was raw coming out, but then he played like a vet starting in like, year 2.

When you think of all of the young talent that OKC team had, it makes you wonder if Westbrook actually killed the opportunity for multiple championships with them

i always thought it was the ibaka contract. they paid him a bunch, and they didn't want to pay harden. now, it is true that there was some weird loophole that was going to make harden even more money if he left, iirc, but they definitely couldn't pay both on top of russ/kd.

they were a really good young team that just ran into some slightly better veteran teams. but that's part of why i don't believe in this "build from the ground up with the kids" philosophy that's occasionally bandied about. it's so hard for that to work.

It’s hard to build a championship team no matter how you do it. There are a few teams that successfully built from the ground up with kids. The Bulls, the Bad Boys, the Spurs, the Warriors before KD. But there are FA driven Title teams and Trade driven Title teams too. I think the issue with the ground up approach is you have to be patient and you have to draft at least one all world piece and you have to get lucky with the health issue.

I thought at the time that they should’ve traded Westbrook instead of Harden, they would have gotten more and even back then you could see that Harden was better at running an offense. They also could have made the decision a year later.

65 games in, the Pelicans are staring at going up one slot ahead of the Lakers in this year's draft.

You have to have a mix of young and old. Back in Jerry Wests day, when they finally won a ring, they had replaced Baylor with Jim McMillian and they went on an immediate winning streak. Magic was a rookie when we won with him and then we got Worthy. Really, it took a few years for Kobe to get rolling but he was very young when he won his first ring.

Every single one of our winning teams had young guys who could play, but they also had some superstar vets.

I agree with TIME, that it’s hard to build a championship team no matter how you do it. If it’s championships then yes, but if it’s about being competitive then that’s not that hard to do.

I was one of the ones who you’re talking about: that I would’ve rather built the team around the young ones: BI, D’Lo, Randle, Lonzo, Clarkson, Hart, Nance, etc. As TIME said championships are hard, but competing for them are very possible and I think we would still be in the conversation every year (realistically I mean) had we built our team the homegrown way. Their is evidence for it all the throughout the NBA. I believe as long as you are competing every year, your chances of actually winning that championship is a lot higher than being a one hit wonder.

Facts. This is why I wanted Paul George added onto our young core instead Lebron. He complemented that team way better than Lebron would have/did. Had we got a veteran big man like a Adams or a Nurkic, I believe we would still be amongst the top teams in the conference every year. Sort of like how the Bucks, C Bags, Nuggets, and Warriors have been.

Think of the length and defense of a starting lineup of D’Lo, PG, BI, Randle, Nurkic/Adams. Yikes.
