The Los Angeles Lakers traded Kendrick Nunn and three second-round picks to the Washington Wizards for forward Rui Hachimura in a deal Monday that will certainly bolster the Lakers now, but also limit the franchise’s flexibility later, particularly any starry ideas for this upcoming free agency.

The Lakers were exploring options for what Nunn and two second-rounders could have netted Los Angeles to supplement LeBron James’ stellar play this season, sources said, and that included New York Knicks swingman Cam Reddish.

Washington officials believed Hachimura, selected by the Wizards at No. 9 overall in the 2019 NBA Draft out of Gonzaga, commanded greater value, sources said. And over Sunday and Monday, the Lakers and Wizards began a viable dialogue that led to the final trade package.

In what marks the first deal of this unofficial NBA trade season, perhaps this swap will spark some movement across the market. Washington had told several teams it sought a first-round pick for Hachimura, sources said. Will other front offices with high asking prices eventually drop their demands as well? The Pistons are seeking first-round capital at minimum for Bojan Bogdanovic just like Rockets are seeking a first-round pick for Eric Gordon, sources said. But there are plenty of buyers willing to part with multiple second-rounders, like the Bucks’ efforts to turn Grayson Allen and seconds into a postseason upgrade for Milwaukee.

For the Lakers, the fourth-year forward adds frontcourt reinforcement as a career 35.6% 3-point shooter. Hachimura also offers some additional upside in shot creation off the dribble for a team lacking an obvious table-setting point guard — not to mention a young player with upside who has been few and far between for this Los Angeles roster in recent seasons.

Hachimura will be a restricted free agent come season’s end, as opposed to Nunn’s unrestricted free agency, and that dynamic will add an interesting wrinkle to Los Angeles’ offseason plans, depending on Hachimura’s performance down the stretch of this 2022-23 campaign.

The Lakers don’t make this deal without the intention of re-signing Hachimura this summer. While second-round picks hold varying valuations depending on front office opinions, sending out three to acquire Hachimura and obtain his Bird rights is a significant price considering his $18.8 million cap hold. Los Angeles could clear just north of $30 million in space if the Lakers were to renounce Hachimura and other players’ rights, but the team is expected to also look to retain combo guard Austin Reaves. A dream scenario of signing or trading for a max-contract-level player just got a whole lot trickier.

Adding Hachimura now, and his subsequent cap hold this summer, can effectively limit the Lakers to under $15 million in room when the offseason commences on June 30, depending where the Pelicans’ first-round pick lands in Los Angeles’ swap with New Orleans, thanks to the 2019 Anthony Davis trade. At present, Hachimura is expected to command a salary of roughly $10 million — around the non-taxpayer mid-level exception. But what if he emerges as the Lakers’ clear third-best player beyond James and Davis, shows out in Los Angeles’ hopeful playoff push and starts to stretch his value closer to the $20 million average annual salary that every player worth something above mid-level money seems to be seeking?

The Wizards had no intention of rewarding Hachimura that type of money, and this trade says as much about Washington’s goal of re-signing forward Kyle Kuzma as anything else. The Wizards have told inquiring teams, such as the Hawks and Suns, that Kuzma is not available for trade, sources said, despite his objective to decline next season’s player option and test the open market.

There will be at least one more Washington move before the deadline, even if Kuzma stays put. The Wizards are expected to reward backup point guard Jordan Goodwin with a standard NBA contract, sources said, before he reaches the 50-game limit for two-way players, and center Vernon Carey is a trade candidate to keep an eye on. Rival executives also are monitoring veteran guard Will Barton as a potential post-trade-deadline buyout candidate, sources said.

The three second-rounders en route to Washington are headlined by the Chicago Bulls’ 2023 second-round selection, which the Wizards are certainly hoping lands between pick Nos. 30-40, where teams often find players still available but graded by their scouting departments as having first-round value. The selection had actually been in Washington’s possession previously by way of 2019 deals with the Bulls that sent Otto Porter Jr. to Chicago and a separate sign-and-trade with Tomas Satoransky.

The Wizards will also receive a 2029 second-round pick from the Lakers plus the less favorable of the Lakers’ 2028 second or Washington’s own 2028 second.

Hachimura’s acquisition does not preclude the Lakers from making another trade before Feb. 9. They enter the next two-plus weeks armed with two first-round picks (2027 and ’29) and three players (Patrick Beverley, Lonnie Walker IV and Russell Westbrook) they could use as matching salaries when upgrading the roster.

With Davis set to return soon, the Lakers are further evaluating the roster and rotation and still determining if they want to make a minor or major upgrade with their tradeable draft assets. At this point, their most likely move would be trading Beverley and a lottery-protected first-round pick for another wing or frontcourt upgrade. But the Lakers are willing to consider adding more assets to get a better player, depending on Davis’ recovery and the state of the market as the deadline nears.

Detroit’s Bojan Bogdanović continues to be the name most often tied to the Lakers in league circles, but the Pistons are looking for an unprotected first-round pick, at a minimum, in a potential trade, according to league sources. The Lakers’ preference is to only give up a lottery-protected first for the 34-year-old Bogdanović, though that could change when up against the trade-deadline clock.

I'd target Gary Trent Jr. with Beverley/FRP/Jones. He's a little redundant with Lonnie but I don't expect to retain Lonnie after this season.

Would love to see this more than Bogdanovic honestly, gives us yet another piece that would be here next season, and adds greatly to our depth and more shooting. A starting lineup of Schröder, Trent, Hachimura, LeBron, AD (or even LeBron, AD, Bryant), and a bench of some combo of Russ, Reaves, Walker, Brown, Gabriel, Christie, super solid.

It’s not hate to want to use his salary to make this team deeper, I’ve been wanting to do that since the off-season, little has changed, only that his value should be higher now. It’s not hate to think that his game doesn’t really work in the playoffs, because my eyes have seen it be the case. He also can’t really be relied upon to close in multiple situations, he still isn’t a good shooter or three point shooter. You can say ok, well, we can just sit him, we can play him situationally, you shouldn’t have to do that with a 47 million dollar player. I don’t think he’s going anywhere, and that’s fine, I think we’ll regret it, but whatever. But I’m tired of seeing legit concerns and criticisms labeled as hate, that’s the easiest way to act like you have some moral high ground in an argument and make it seem like you’re correct because you love the guy or something and some of us don’t so clearly we just want to see him fail. I’d love nothing more than for Russ to succeed here and for us to win a title with him and for him to rub it in everyone’s faces, Russ’ success means the teams success. I just don’t see this happening, so I’d prefer to try to get future pieces we won’t be able to with cap space IF the opportunity presents itself. Oh man what crazy hate, poor persecuted Russ.

Weezy I feel like many times I’m not posting directly at you and you’re taking it maybe as I am. I think you’re a fairly balanced poster that is maybe a bit more down on this team than some of the other ones of us that are a bit higher on it.

I’ve got no issues with any of your objective arguments and I’m fine with all of these:

- We should use Russ' salary for other pieces
- Russ is overpaid
- Russ is turnover prone
- Russ is not a good shooter
- Russ is a poor off ball defender
- Russ has low ball IQ

These are all objective things. I have a problem with subjective arguments others make like: russ is a bad teammate, russ is a stat chaser, russ isn't a winning player and so on and so forth. Most of these are rooted in people's dislike of Russ. Kobe missed two mvps from the same irrational hate.

Hachimura starting makes the most sense to me, I'd rather have him guard the best opposing wing than Bev or Lonnie doing it. It might be unrealistic to expect Bev to go from starting to 3rd string but this Hachimura trade makes it much easier to field more "normal" lineups.

Knicks and Bucks talking (Suns probably involved or listening in on the convo)

New York Knicks swingman Cam Reddish has been benched for 25 consecutive games and counting under Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau with no end in sight before the trade deadline.

As reported two weeks ago in a HoopsHype NBA notebook, the Milwaukee Bucks were one of several teams to express interest in trading for Reddish.

With trade talks surrounding Reddish ongoing, the Knicks have expressed interest in Bucks starter Grayson Allen, a career 39.5 percent three-point shooter, league sources told HoopsHype.

Allen’s name has come up in several trade discussions around the league, including several three-team trade concepts where Suns forward Jae Crowder or Rockets guard Eric Gordon would end up in Milwaukee.

Given the frequency of trade concepts Allen has been linked to involving Crowder and Gordon, it appears more likely he’d be moved – if at all – for one of those players rather than Reddish. However, the Bucks and Knicks have also discussed other concepts involving Reddish going to Milwaukee that wouldn’t involve Allen, so a trade between the two teams could still happen.

If I had to guess, Bucks will spend the next two weeks trying to get a 3rd team in on a Crowder deal. If they can't, Reddish is their fallback (like he was ours, it sounds)

Bojan and Burks: Pistons still high... on them

Typically, a team like the Detroit Pistons, residing at the bottom of the East, would be considered a seller at the trade deadline, but that’s not necessarily the case this season.

Despite numerous inquiries on Bojan Bogdanovic and Alec Burks, rival executives have been met with a consistent stance from Detroit: It’s going to take overwhelming offers to move either player.

While some rival executives believe it could be a posturing tactic, others are taking the Pistons at face value that they want to compete next season with a high lottery pick alongside the backcourt trio of Cade Cunningham, Jaden Ivey and Killian Hayes and veteran presences of Bogdanovic and Burks.

Bogdanovic, who’s averaging a career-high 21.3 points, could force a desperate playoff team looking to get over the hump to offer a lightly protected first-round pick and a good young player. He turns 34 in April and is owed $39 million over the next two seasons, which includes a partially guaranteed $2 million for the 2024-25 season.

Some rival executives believed Detroit could get two second-round picks for reserve swingman Alec Burks, but the current stance from Detroit is that won’t be enough.

Burks, who’s shooting a career-best 44.4 percent from downtown, turns 32 in July and has a $10.49 million team option for next season. If Burks remains with the Pistons past the trade deadline, Detroit is expected to exercise that team option with potential extension talks on the horizon for Burks as well, league sources told HoopsHype.

Clippers and Nuggets like Reid

Minnesota Timberwolves center Naz Reid has drawn interest from various teams on the trade market, including the Los Angeles Clippers and Denver Nuggets, league sources told HoopsHype.

With the Timberwolves reportedly gauging the trade market on point guard D’Angelo Russell, could the Clippers entice Minnesota executive Tim Connelly with guard Terance Mann as part of a trade package, or the Nuggets with guard Bones Hyland, whom Connelly drafted in Denver?

Reid, who will become an unrestricted free agent this summer, could potentially command an average annual salary around the full taxpayer or non-taxpayer mid-level exception as one of the notable free agents on the market.

In seven games as a starter, Reid has averaged 15.4 points in 25.9 minutes with a plus-14.8 rating, per Basketball-Reference.

The Spurs guys

The San Antonio Spurs are considered a potential trade deadline seller in the eyes of NBA executives around the league with a trio of enticing veterans.

While the current asking price for Jakob Poeltl is two first-round picks, multiple executives who spoke with HoopsHype believe the Spurs can get one first-round pick for Poeltl, but two is unlikely given he’ll enter unrestricted free agency and could potentially earn roughly $20 million annually this summer. If the Spurs can get a first-round pick and a solid young player, it might be the middle ground to get a deal done.

If San Antonio keeps Poeltl past the deadline, the Spurs would seemingly pay to keep him since they wouldn’t want to lose an asset of his caliber for nothing.

If traded, Poeltl’s new team would also have pressure to retain him in free agency, especially if the team gave up a first-round pick to acquire him.

Veteran sharpshooter Doug McDermott could command one or two second-round picks on the trade market depending on the pick number and any protections, league sources told HoopsHype. McDermott has shot 41.8 percent from downtown during his Spurs tenure and is owed $13.75 million next season.

Veteran wing Josh Richardson is also available for a second-round pick, league sources told HoopsHype. Richardson, a 29-year-old 3-and-D swingman, will become an unrestricted free agent this summer.

How about Bev, Walker, Jones and a few seconds for McDermott and Richardson?

Then sign whatever big shakes loose in the buyout market for center insurance using that open roster spot. Richardson is a better defender than Walker and I don't think the offensive role Walker had on the team to start the season exists any more. Mcbuckets has shooters gravity. That's why I'm in on that move. When it involved a first, any Spurs deal was very low in my target rankings. BUT if they're only costing 2nds, gimme.

The Ibaka market

Several teams are monitoring Ibaka, including the Brooklyn Nets, Miami Heat, and Atlanta Hawks, league sources told HoopsHype. The sense is that Milwaukee would be willing to part with Ibaka for a second-round pick, according to NBA executives who spoke with HoopsHype.

Brooklyn is searching for a veteran frontcourt bench player who can protect the paint and stretch the floor. It’s also worth noting that Ibaka also has ties to Kevin Durant dating back to their days as teammates with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

With Miami center Dewayne Dedmon considered expendable, as noted in a recent HoopsHype podcast episode and echoed by Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, Ibaka could be a veteran alternative at center for the Heat.

OG speculation

One team that would be a very intriguing fit for Anunoby is the Grizzlies. For Memphis, trading assets for a player like him would be a departure from their approach of drafting and developing most of their players in-house. But with the NBA Finals in reach, adding a player of his two-way versatility could put them over the top in the West. Now is as good a time as ever for them to make an aggressive move like this.

Memphis has all their first-round picks going forward and a Top 4 protected Warriors first-rounder for 2024. A combination of those could serve as the foundation of an Anunoby package. Who they move on the roster gets more interesting. Would a combination of Danny Green and a young player like Ziaire Williams or one of their recent draft selections be enough? Or could the Raptors push for Dillon Brooks, an Ontario native, as well? Although Anunoby could start and close over Brooks, having both gives the Grizzlies more lineup optionality in the playoffs if they wanted to play small.

The Blazers previously tried to acquire Anunoby for the No. 7 pick ahead of the 2023 NBA draft, according to Chris Haynes. Perhaps this could be revisited, especially with Portland on the outside looking in of the play-in picture. Would they consider trading future picks and Shaedon Sharpe, who they selected with that pick? A package featuring him and Josh Hart would allow the Blazers to remain under the luxury tax for this season.

New York can easily get in the mix since they have all their first-rounders and four owed by other teams. The Knicks have a good combination of young players they can trade who could also make up the $12.4 million matching salary required.

The Kings are another team that could use help on their perimeter defense and could be a sneaky aggressive team now that they hold the No. 3 seed. Would they be willing to part with Keegan Murray already to get that done?

The Suns are another team that could make sense with a combination of Cameron Johnson and future first-round picks. A frontcourt featuring Anunoby and Mikal Bridges would give the Suns the unfair advantage of having two players who can defend the best guards and wings in the league.
