I’m banking on Ham demanding it. Neither was Russ and Walker, but I see signs of improvement.

I would take Cam for one of our guards and a second.
I would give up two Firsts for OG, because he’s the type of player that will always fetch a good return if you had to flip him in a few seasons. I just don’t think he moves the needle close enough to “Star!” For our FO to go for it.

Who says Cam is not a good defender?

"...Reddish was the forgotten man entering training camp. His acquisition from the Hawks last January in exchange for a future first-round pick seemed like a major mistake by team president Leon Rose. Now, that deal is begging to pay off. With Quentin Grimes a nonfactor due to a nagging left foot injury and Evan Fournier benched for ineffectiveness, Reddish has emerged — at least for the time being — as the Knicks’ answer at shooting guard.

'He’s so talented. He can really score the ball, but he’s showing he’s [a] two-way [player] and he can lock up and defend, whether it’s guards or wings,” Julius Randle said. “So as long as he keeps doing that his value is amazing to us.'

He has the best net rating of any of the Knicks’ starters, at plus-2.8 per 100 possessions, and his fourth-quarter defense was instrumental in the two road wins. His 7-foot-1 wingspan makes it difficult to pass around or over him, and the 6-7 Reddish can defend multiple positions, offering needed versatility.

'I think he’s taking a lot of pride in it,' Thibodeau said.

With a grin, Reddish added: 'I don’t want my man to score much, simple as that.'"

i haven't followed closely enough to see why he fell out of favor there. looks like he started pretty strong, fell off a bit, had a nice 4-5 game stretch (around when that article came out) then sat for some reason and didn't really find his footing after returning. hasn't played since early december.

i looked at some lineup data, and it was interesting. grimes seems to have taken over reddish's spot in the rotation, but in the same spot, reddish actually does just as well or better (for example, as part of their rj/brunson/randle/robinson lineup). i'm guessing reddish/his agent put up a fuss about this, and thibs just decided to sit him. leon rose can't be happy about that, as the coach's decision (which may or may not have been that great to begin with) made you lose an asset (that 1st round pick was totally wasted now).

i think there's a very good chance reddish finishes the year with us. i think the reason nothing's happened is that we're still looking at bigger things.

That was in November. Do you wonder why Thibs doesn’t play him?

This is why Atlanta let him go:

[Cranjis] Cam Reddish’s defensive impact percentiles (via D-LEBRON). His defensive impact this season grades out the worst of any Wing Stopper over the last 8 seasons in our database.

no, but that's the point of trades like this--foregoing some future value for present value.

to me, with draft picks, it's about when the cost is due. for example--with the AD trade, i was quite fine with giving up picks all the way out to 2025, as his prime as a superstar level player projected out past that. so there was the initial talent in the trade (which we got the better end of), and now there's the continued payments/maintenance. like buying a car maybe? throw some cash (current players down), get nicer new car (new player), and pay off the difference as time goes on. if you get mileage out of the player after you're done with the payments, that's great. if you don't, it's like a lease. if your car breaks down before you're done paying, you lost. if you go to re-sell the car at any point, it's likely you're taking a substantial loss. that has to be factored into all purchasing decisions of all cars, though. it's rare that one appreciates. this latter concept is what i think morey was trying to do when he was always churning the roster in houston, but it really only worked the one time and was largely a failure on the whole, imo.

tl;dr: you don't trade for a player concerned about what you'll get when you have to trade them later. it's likely much less than you paid and too hard to gauge.

ATL let him go in 2021. His teammates and his coach said he was an alright defender less than two months ago. I do not wonder why Thibs does or does not play his guys. I wonder more about why Ham plays PatBev, for example, and especially why he insists on playing three (!) small guards together. Coaches do stuff for reasons known to them. According to every metric Cranjis and similar guys tweet, most NBA coaches should not be playing certain guys, yet they do. Back to Reddish: he has every tool in the world to be a good wing defender, certainly better than our undersized guards who are forced to guard SFs who out-weigh them by 30 lbs.

I'd be happy to give NY one of our guards for Cam and taking a gamble on him. Because we don't even have to take a gamble on some of our guys and what they bring to the team right now -- not much at all. In the worst case, you improved on size and youth.

if it's for nunn and a 2nd, what have you really lost? it's not like nunn's a defender. you get to give reddish one last shot at making a name for himself before he has to start taking lower-dollar contracts to prove himself. and his physical profile is right for us.

yes, i liked stan, too, but we can't have stan.

He suffered a bad ankle injury and played 49 games in 2021-2022, he came back and played through it but played with minutes chopped. You can see the massive difference in that season from others, that's sketchy usage of stats to prove a point to say the least.

If the trade is Nunn + 2nd, you get Cam Reddish tomorrow so you can balance out the roster a bit better.

However, if I'm the Lakers...I'm going after OG or Jerami Grant. For OG, you probably have to give up 2 unprotected 1sts.

For Jerami Grant, I think 1 unprotected 1st + Nunn/Bev would work. The blazers are losing a lot lately...and if that continues, I feel like they'll try to get something out of Jerami Grant before he walks this summer given they gave up a 2025 first round pick (via Bucks) to get him.

Grant solves a lot of the Lebron defensive issues problem. We can put Grant on the big guards, SF and PF...while Lebron gets to coast on the weakest offensive player on the floor.

Grant and AD have some intriguing possibilities in a zone type defensive scheme too. Great agility to go with the length.

I'd give up Bev, Walker and a FRP in a heartbeat. Hopefully we could dump Jones on them too with another 2nd rd pick as a sweetener.

Jerami Grant would be amazing for us. Are they actually actively looking to trade him? Because yeah, I'd send that FRP right away for him.

The last I've seen on him is that he's expiring and hasn't signed an extension. I saw stuff saying that he was enjoying his time in Portland, but he said the same thing in Detroit. He also has listed winning as a top consideration in his upcoming FA. So...I still think Turner is more of a likely option at the moment, but it's the NBA, injuries can happen and change guy's perspective pretty quickly. There is also lot of cash for him on the table in Portland , if he declined the extension and resigned over the summer though. He's still on my wishlist until he signs on the dotted line.

I agree, good for Smush. Kinda happy he's back. He's only three years older than LeBron actually. :)

He's been dissatisfied with minutes there and most likely vocal about it, Thibs is like Belichick in that respect and endorses the STFU policy with young players.
Anyways, Thibs prefers Quentin Grimes and when QG went out recently Thibs played Cam more (interesting since Grimes is a shooting guard) and when QG came back, Cam went out with a groin injury and during that time Grimes slightly cemented himself as a defender Thibs liked and preferred.

This is all 2nd hand info I came across, I've watched 1 1/2 Knicks games this season but it is weird as Cam no doubt is a better athlete and has a lot more size than Grimes. But you know, some guys rub a coach the right way.
