Great post Cookie from what LVD posted elsewhere. You’re LB’s R & D person, and the D sure ain’t for “development”.
Thanks for doing this Panko. This lineup was a problem against the Grizzlies. It just seemed to not have mobility, we gave up a lot of offensive rebounds and weren't scoring particularly well. Not sure what to draw from this yet. Really liked the Westbrook - Reaves - Lebron - Melo - AD lineup in back to back fourth quarters. Reaves 3&D play has been a god send so far with our injuries. Not sure if you guys watched Westbrook setting screens for Lebron in the fourth. That's going to become a great set - Westbrook sets decent screens and when he rolls it's game over. Either AD's guy comes to help leaving AD open or Russ has an easy lane to the basket. Mix that with Lebron's current shooting and two more shooters and it's hard to stop. We ran that set three times back to back. It resulted in an easy dunk for AD, an open 3 for AD that he missed and a fumble by AD on a roll. It's similar to what we use to do with the Lebron and AD pick and roll with Javale or Dwight in behind for the lob. I'd like to see how our offence looks when we start incorporating secondary actions into our primary sets as well. With our big 3 all screening, we should be able to get a lot of open looks for our shooters. And because we have so many of them in Rondo, Nunn, Ellington, Monk, Reaves, Ariza and Melo, we should have at least 1 or 2 hot every night.

didn't see the game, was the reaves/baze OT thing real or just bad luck for reaves? iow: was SA picking on him on either end?
Don’t think anyone has really picked on him yet? He keeps getting hit in the face though, really ought to think about a mouth guard.
Reaves did over help in the paint which allowed a wide open SA three in the corner. That was a mistake he realized he made.
Yep saw that PLUS he threw a bad pass near the camera’s sideline which got picked off. Why I’m taking the dagger in the stomach for the team this morning to make sure he doesn’t get the Big head.
I haven't had time to analyze last night's combos very much, but before tonight's game, I just wanted to followup on the comments above. As people have said, the Westbrook+Rondo combo does not work. It went -17 this game and -15 in Game 1. It did go +11 in Game 2, but those were late game blowout minutes, so it's doubtful that's meaningful, since every single WB+Rondo lineup in G1 & G4 was negative. Also as noted, sadly, Reaves' +/- streak came to an end. Still, most of the damage came when he played next to WB+Rondo. The WB/Rondo/Reaves unit went -14, which means that the rest of the time, Reaves was +1. Hopefully Vogel limits or doesn't play the WB+Rondo combo tonight, and Reaves can regain his +/- mojo.

Not sure if there's much to take away from this game, other than late in the 2Q they just stopped giving effort. It was pretty much all pluses until this unit went -9 for the last 3 min of the 1H: Westbrook/Monk/Baze/Melo/AD However, this same unit went +5 at the end of the game, and in the SA game it went +8 in OT and won the game. Almost nobody likes the Westbrook + Rondo combo, besides Vogel, but it was just a reflection of the team this game - it did good when the going was good, and did bad when the going was bad. Funny (to me) sequence in the PBP in the 4Q where Baze enters for Dwight and simultaneously Dwight enters for Bradley. 8:21 Kent Bazemore enters the game for Dwight Howard 8:21 Dwight Howard enters the game for Avery Bradley
Thought I'd take a look at the numbers when playing 2 bigs vs 1 big, and they're different than what we might expect. For this purpose, I am only counting AD, DAJ & Dwight as bigs. In general, the 2 big lineups do fine, and were positive for every game except G3. However, the 1 big lineup has been negative in every game except G3. This includes the AD at C lineups being negative, often substantially so, in every game except G3. If this trend continues, we may have to re-evaluate our thinking on AD playing at C vs next to DAJ or Dwight. My speculation is that most AD at C lineups are currently too small, since it usually means Melo or LeBron is playing PF and a smaller guard is playing SF. However, if the SF & PF are big enough, then AD at C lineups are fine, as evidenced by the LeBron/Melo/AD lineup being positive in every game played (G1-G3) and +19 overall. However, LeBron/AD at PF/C lineups have not done well so far in a small sample. When Ariza comes back, that could help restore size to the backup SF spot and the AD at C lineups. There doesn't seem to be a meaningful differential to me between when AD plays with DAJ vs with Dwight. The only 0 big lineup was once during 4Q blowout minutes of G2. Cumulative 2 bigs +3 1 big -26 0 bigs +5 AD & DAJ +1 AD & Dwight +2 AD at C -21 DAJ solo C -2 Dwight solo C -3 LeBron/Melo/AD +19 LeBron/Melo/Dwight -1 LeBron/AD -24 G5 2 bigs +2 1 big -10 AD & DAJ +2 AD & Dwight +0 AD at C -8 DAJ solo C n/a Dwight solo C -2 G4 2 bigs +15 1 big -11 AD & DAJ +7 AD & Dwight +8 AD at C -13 DAJ solo C -2 Dwight solo C +4 G3 2 bigs -16 1 big +19 AD & DAJ -14 AD & Dwight -2 AD at C +10 DAJ solo C n/a Dwight solo C +9 LeBron/Melo/AD +3 LeBron/Melo/Dwight +10 LeBron/AD +1 G2 2 bigs +2 1 big -17 0 bigs +5 AD & DAJ +4 AD & Dwight -2 AD at C -8 DAJ solo C n/a Dwight solo C -9 LeBron/Melo/AD +10 LeBron/Melo/Dwight -6 LeBron/AD -21 G1 2 bigs +0 1 big -7 AD & DAJ +2 AD & Dwight -2 AD at C -2 DAJ solo C n/a Dwight solo C -5 LeBron/Melo/AD +6 LeBron/Melo/Dwight -5 LeBron/AD -4
yeah, you can't play AD at the 5 with a guard playing the 3. that's dantoni territory. this is why many of us wanted another big wing, and why ariza's (and maybe THT's) absence might be bigger than we're thinking.
You're a legend mate. The fact that without Ariza and THT we are still not overplaying DAJ and DH it tells us that AD at the 5 more often is really the way to go. I really hope Ariza and THT improve the performance when AD is 5. I like AD at the 4 but with Russ is not possible to play the 2 centers. We could try to sneak in 2bigs lineups when Russ is out and play with 1 when he's in Edit: I thought it through. AD is necessary with Russ and he's mandatory when playing 2 bigs so yeah, not happening because the man needs to rest. Well, I wouldn't mind having 10/12 minutes of Russ and Howard, what do you think?
I agree with you intuitively, and prefer all Russ minutes to be with AD at C. The numbers are mixed so far though. Westbrook + AD at C was good in G2 & G3, but bad in G1, G4 & G5, and has gone -22 overall. Westbrook + Dwight as solo C was bad in G1 & G2, good in G3, and near breakeven in G4 & G5, and has gone -12 overall. Westbrook + DAJ as solo C only played briefly in G4 for -2 in less than a minute. 2 bigs without Westbrook has been positive or breakeven every game, for +8 overall, most of that being AD + DAJ.
