This is kind of moving the goal posts though.

Now you're changing the argument to "look at all the stuff we lost the last few years" instead of "look at what we could have gotten this summer if we'd taken on deals for picks".

Obviously it's easier to look in hindsight at all the pieces lost and be critical because we didn't land Kawhi. But that's a completely different argument to "we messed up this summer badly".

"So our real loss is only 32y/o Danny Green and possibly Mcgee (vet min of 2.7m vs his current deal of 4m). Yeah, I can live with that."

Versus the Clips these next two years you're down with that huh? The "ring is the only thing" mantra these next 2 years we're now set up, health willing, to have a great shot at ...... you're going to walk back 2 BIG very useful pieces on us for the sake of your argument that any other way than the way Rob Pelinka did it would have been better. What it boils down to it seems to me.

i'd prefer kawhi, too. but it's incredibly unlikely to build that team. hell, people are throwing a parade for the clippers building...basically the same thing we've got.

another axiom is that the team with the best star wins, imo, not necessarily the most. between lebron and AD, i feel we've got as good of odds as anyone.

plus, if our support players play well, they can be traded for a third star. at worst, they're all expiring year after next and could be used to absorb a fallen star if need be. all of this is better than a vacuum that we continually beg people to fill.

Well I agree with that. It did take some time to build up enough assets to trade for Davis though, that was the lynch pin to the operation.

I'm just saying to be fair to the Lakers, they did a perfect job of building a home for a third star to join and create a dynasty and the dude passed on the opportunity. After that they pivoted perfectly. Moving forward, we're in just an insanely better situation than we've been in so, so long. We can reset too in about two years and start moving in another direction, I think it'll work well at that point too. Davis in his prime, maybe Kuzma has stepped up at that point, and LeBron eeking along to maybe a 2nd or 3rd title here.

Classic slippery slope case. You can't pursue all of them. You have cap space for 1. Who do you choose? Stars and their egos aren't going to wait. So we were forced by situation to go all in on Kawhi which was the right play. As it turn out, damned if you and damned if you don't. Imagine the backlash if you signed Kyrie or Butler right away and didn't bother with Kawhi. In hindsight, it was arguably the right play to forego Kawhi, but imagine the backlash from fans and media if you DIDN'T pursue Kawhi at all....

If we had to do it again, only way to divert that happened was to go full cloak and dagger. Plant bugs everywhere. BC we all know Dennis and Kawhi been lying to AEG, New Balance and Lakers FO.

I think he's an average player who might be an above average player, but I also think that's unlikely. That's not bad at all for 27th pick. Comparing him to Harden is a disservice to him.

Kyrie was working the back side too, just like Kawhi. The only difference is he didn't string other teams out too far. Our best bet would have been to straight up pursued Butler, as he seems to be more straight up without a bunch of his own angles. That being said, not sure he would be a better fit/outcome for us than our Plan B was.

I think all along it was:
    1. Kawhi
    2. Kyrie
    3. Plan B
    4. Butler

Both of the first two guys would have likely ended up the way Kawhi ended up, so Plan B or Butler???? I chose Plan B and wait to punt again in a couple of years.

yep. i'll add that i'm not a "title or bust" guy. so much has to break right (particularly health) to get a ring. you just want a chance each year, and i think we have that now. honestly, 2007-8 was one of my favorite seasons, and we lost to the damn C Bags! it was just a fun ride and a good team that was easy to root for. hopefully, we're back to that. and we've got a new set of bona fide villains in lac and hou.

i'd love to hear why we weren't pursuing butler. he was a natural fit, imo. but he was locked in on miami from the get-go. you telling me he wouldn't have considered seeing how our kawhi pursuit went had we registered interest? or would that be insulting? don't know. but that was the only backup plan better than what we did, imo. and it was out the door early.

What's been my point of contention? Rob's finesse game is lacking.

Don't just throw assets away. We didn't have to salary match if the max bag wasnt going to get a max player. So hold onto Moe, Bonga, JJ, 2nd round pick and dump it once Kawhi commits. Otherwise take in AD's deal partially into cap space and still have 28m in cap space to get s*** done.

Again Rob is the common link, so even if it's majority Magic's fault, Rob had a hand in it. Waiving Beas is all you needed to potentially bring in Melo last year. You didn't have to attach Zu and if he got in the way of our cap this summer we renounce him. Or conduct a s&t, which was the theme this summer. We didn't even get a future 2nd round pick for Zu. Then there's Jules and that came after the George "commitment" to Okc, so who were we clearing up additional cap for?

Hypothetically, if you swap out Jules/Nance/JC's expiring deal you can trade that for Beal this coming year.

Kcp can block a trade, so Green/Kuz/Mcgee aggregated still is not enough salary to bring back Beal. And once again we have exhausted our assets, so we would need more to get that type of deal done.

I don't understand why you guys think its not a good idea to get a more savvy cap exec to assist Rob through all of this.

You want to win and compete for a chip, but you want to be smart and efficient about it as well.

Yeah...don't think rob "doesn't understand the cap".

He may not value youth and be allergic to RFA, but that's not the same thing.

he was overpaid, and NY is regretting it.

Hey, we see a mole on your MRI, and not sure you're going to be able to play the full year. Let's talk renegotiation since the free agency money has now dried up.

For all the Morris fans here.

If he does go to the Knicks, that'll be them getting 4 power forwards this off season.

So you completely moved the goal posts again. You're again talking about moves that happened before this summer and assigning them to Rob and saying we failed. That's a crazy argument to make. Not only is it impossible to blame Rob for all of that, but to conflate those previous moves with what happened this summer makes no sense. It's trading in hindsight and honestly doesn't apply to the original argument we were having.

The only shred of assets you can hold on to for the original argument (this summer was mishandled) are Mo Wagner, Isaac Bonga, and a 2nd round pick for what amounts to 4 million in cap space. I'd rather have the space than those assets which honestly aren't strong assets in the slightest. You're taking up 2 or 3 roster spots for players who cannot contribute to a title this upcoming season. I'd rather have McGee, Dudley, and Daniels than Bonga, Wagner, and Jones and a 2nd round pick. No question.

We're trying to win now not collect at best middling assets, but at worst roster fodder we'd likely have to cut anyway.
