My hope is the Lakers and OKC work a trade for Deng for Melo. That eliminates year 2 of Dengs contract.

If Melo doesnt want to be a 6th man and be a team guy? buy him out and call.it a day.

Either or works for the Lakers. I would make the deal happen.

For OKC, they dont have to stretch beyond 2 years and they may be able to use Deng as well.

I think the trade works for everyone. I would do it asap.

He can still post up and make defenders work in the half court.

More important, I want the Deng contract to go. This might be our only shot.

    It's not.

And there's no urgency to move Deng unless a marquee FA is signing here.

Wouldn't they get Deng and then stretch him?

I would love to get rid of that Deng contract, but man... I reeeeeaaaally don't like Melo and do not want to help him find a soft landing outta OKC and I have zero interest in rooting for him here. I also don't see how getting a me-first bum on our roster keeps with Maginka/LeBron's vision for this roster. More than anything, I don't want our young guys catching "lazy" from him.

I still hold out hope that it will be HOU that picks him up.

I agree. However, this small ball death lineup SLIGHTLY intrigues my interest:

    Ball or Rondo
    Ingram
    Lebron
    Kuzma
    Melo

deng n melo stretch is roughly same amt per yr (melo @9 deng @7) but melo is over 3yrs, deng would be over 5yrs, okc is gona be in tax for the forseable future i think they're better off with a 3yr stretch or buying him out altogether

Melo put up 16 and 6 on 36% from 3.

Again, I know it’s a big if, but if he actually buys in to a bench role I think he’d be a good addition. Especially if we have to ship out Hart in a Kawhi trade (I hope not).

Coming off the bench for Patrick Patterson in OKC is one thing. Coming off the bench for Brandon Ingram in LA while getting to play with your best friend is a different story.

I would be so pissed off though if we’re holding onto that $5 million in cap for Melo and miss out on Brook. Melo gets here in trade for Deng or veterans minimum, that’s it.

I just don’t know about Melo. He obviously doesn’t have much left in the tank, and he’s often a ball stopper on offense.

He’d likely come off the bench, and between Rondo, Stephen, Kuz and Wagner, it just doesn’t work. McGee would likely join that group.

We need a starting Center and looks like Brook would be that guy.

OKC, by rule still needs to add another player. They have to bring 14 players III bro the new season. If the stretch Melo (or Deng), they are sitting on 12 players and need to add 2 guys in that case.

With 13 currently on the roster, OKC has 159m in committed salary. Let's just assume the lower end of 160m if they add a vet min as their 14th...(but in actuality it would be more).

Also looking ahead, the tax theshold for 2019/20 will be projected to be 132m. OKC only has 5 players with a committed salary of 117m with multiple players having non-guaranteed contracts and options (highlighted by Patterson with a 5.7m player option). So if they swap Melo for Deng, they're looking at 135m for 6 players for the 19/20 season and would be at that time roughly 3m over the tax threshold.

Let's assume they use their taxpayer mle of 5.8m to add to the roster and have Noel and Patterson opt into their options. Also they choose to fully guarantee their non-guaranteed players, so team salary is projected at 155m (I'm projecting this on the higher end) in that case. So they would be 23m over the tax in this scenario.

    2018/19 projected OKC tax hit

    Melo unstretched: 150m
    Deng unstretched: 94m

    Melo stretched: 48m
Deng stretched: no taxes (would be about 3m under the tax threshold).

    2019/20 projected OKC tax hit

    Deng unstretched: 79.25
    Deng stretched: 33.25
