i think i predicted that if we wanted derozan during his recent FA period, we'd have a shot at him via trade within two years. i'm saying the same about paul george now. tor was never going to get over the hump, and they'd eventually balk at the salaries necessary to keep that group together--lest they become memphis east. okc is in danger of that now, but like most capped out non-contenders, they sort of have no choice but to pay up. they'll squeeze a couple more years out, then sell off parts at less than actual value (but more than letting them walk for nothing--such as to avoid being the current lakers).

and i'm with vasashi on adding players: i'd rather overpay for a productive player than hold my cash and wait for superman.

    Yeah, I'm with you abeer!

It doesn't matter if Derozan was a bad fit or not a franchise center piece. Dude still has value and in a league that has small markets that continually rely on harvesting their young draft picks cause no high profile free agents will give them the time of day, those small market teams will always try to trade for a namer on a bloated contract, since that guarantees them a star in a locked in contract.

One obvious example is Dipo (a fringe all-star) on a locked in contract for an Indy team that no high profile free agent is willing to go to. Reggie was home grown...George was home grown...What other legit stars has Indy had in the last couple decades? Ironically another small market team is the one that gave Dipo that bag. Now we're all making fun of OKC cause instead of rerouting George, they held onto him and could face KDeuces 2.0. Meanwhile, OKC just threw the farm at Russ so they're good even if George walks (and that was exactly the end game they were hoping for in trading for George since Russ had yet to sign that max extension that was sitting on the table for months.)

Anyways you throw money at names/all-stars and figure it out later. Meanwhile, you don't throw money at guys in contract years that dont have the resume of being a namer just yet...Unless of course you're the god awful Suns...

And some of y'all want to max out Jules...I need no further proof of how bad of an idea it is. If you're like of mind to the Suns then you need to change the way you think. Capela is taller and more of a rim protector to Jules (nearly 2blks per vs .5 blk) so I understand the value...But max??? I guess that's Houston's problem.... But that is one less destination and less money in the FA pool to offer towards Jules.

    Meanwhile in Sac...

Vash why are you exaggerating again? Jules's max is like 25M and no one here is advocating maxing him. You just expect to have him at 15M or the Lakers will consider anything higher even say 3M higher to be a bad contract.

We've been down this path too often, so I'm just going to refute any "Jules needs to get paid" fan with #DontbeaSunOfaB****

Capela getting maxed is good news for us.

I'd also heard somewhere that the Rockets wanting to pursue James is overblown because they know they'd have to blow everything up to get to him and they feel confident they can challenge the Warriors as is.

Yeah. Not sure why the Rockets would want to mess with what they have. Adding Lebron is always great, but in the Rockets case, they'd have to strip EVERYTHING else away.

Not my point at all. Who here has ever said "max" the guy at his 25M eligible figure if that's what it is?

Have to wonder if the Suns land the #1 pick and end up drafting Ayton, if it'll change their mind on making a big offer to Capela. Obviously acknowledging that Ayton is not a sure thing whereas Capela has proven himself to be a solid C but from a value standpoint, makes more sense for them to just have Ayton be their answer at C long-term and they still have several other bigs to get by in the meantime (Chandler, Alan Williams, Chriss, Bender).

Eddie: I think the Suns are going to go Luka with their pick since they hired the Luka whisper in Kokoskov. They get the #1 pick and I'm thinking they'll look to trade down to a team that is hell-bent on drafting Ayton.

If the Suns draft Luka, they will throws their money at Capela, Gordon or any unrestricted big.

Khmrp: if the Suns tie up their cap with a restricted FA like Capela then that's less money being thrown at Jules while Houston decides to match or not. And that's a win for the Lakers.

Probably because Bender/Chriss suck. I'm kidding but while both have certainly shown the type of flashes that made the Suns pick them so high in 2016, neither has really shown enough consistency to cement themselves as a sure-fire option going forward. As the saying goes, if you have two options, you actually have none. If the Suns can get a proven quality PF or C with their cap space this summer (Capela, Gordon, Randle etc.) it locks down the position and they can probably look to trade one of Bender or Chriss, while they still have "young guy with upside" value.

Now we're talking. Sign PG, tell LeBron thanks but no thanks. Re-sign Randle. Find a taker for the Deng. Win 45 games next year. Get two max slots ready for '19. Sign Kawhi and Kyrie (double K = Special K). Profit!

    2019 Lineup:
Center: Randle / Bryant (Zu is gone in the Deng dump)
    PF: Ingram / Kuz
    SF: Kawhi / Ingram
    SG: Kyrie / Hart
    PG: Lonzo / Kyrie

Unless PG and Randle take big time discounts, there won't be enough cap space in 2019 for two max slots. Even if they salary dumped Deng.

[IMG] .... long as we're smoking here and allowing that could be a realistic plan .... have to say it's not breaking my heart to not see LBJ in the mix. Au contraire.
