That was a long time ago.

Melo isn't anywhere near the same player he was then which was nearly a decade ago.

I'd do it just to get rid of Deng, but not expecting Melo to make a huge impact. He hasn't even been able to make the postseason in the pathetic East the last four seasons so not expecting him to all of a sudden make us all that much better.

It honestly wouldn't keep me from doing the trade. Melo is going into his 15th season I think, and although he's still playing over 30 minutes per game, I think that can start to come down at this point. With a PG like Ball and the other unselfish/skilled passing kids we have on the roster plus Lopez, I think Melo would fit in fine as a catch and shoot player. I think he dribbles the ball a lot in NY because he has to, that team was garbage, but I think he'a capable of buying into team ball. He's not fully comparable to Kobe to me because as much as I love Kobe, Melo doesn't take quite as difficult shots and he isn't coming off an achilles injury. He's still a 20+ ppg scorer.

Boy that'd be a rough way to lose Randle, but I might do it. He's got the ETO for next summer... The problem is, if he opts out and we bring in LeBron and George, there's no room for Carmelo anymore. If there's no room for Carmelo, then why would he opt out? He might as well take the extra year and stick around.

    Seems risky.

Yeah, Melo hated the triangle but its not like he's some selfish star who still feels he needs to be the go to iso player. I think he'd be a good fit and willing to buy into a team game where he's mainly a catch and shoot guy, but also someone we can depend on when the shot clock is coming down to create his own shot from the perimeter.

But to be clear, I only trade for him if it helps unload Deng's contract while keeping the flexibility to possibly add Lebron and George.

That was my exact thinking. Wonder if Chicago would be interested in the same deal for Wade. They're rebuilding, they lost Gibson. Wade is expiring, man I'd love a deal like that.

i wouldn't like giving up on randle this soon, especially with the work he's put in this offseason and the promise he showed last season

I'd much rather make this move for Wade.

I wouldn't be either if it didn't seem more and more likely all the time that he's not in our future plans. Reportedly offered for George for one thing, and Magic always seems to mention him as an aftethought. At the introductory press conference for the 3 rookies he was talking about what we're building here and what to look forward to and he finally got around to mentioning Clarkson and Randle like 8th and 9th on his list, it was almost like a token message. I don't think he's a priority next offseason, it seems to be 2 max free agents and then everything else.

How soon we forget. This is exactly what resulted in Mosgov and Deng.

Ideally I’d like us to give Randle a chance to improve his trade value but I feel like he’s next to go since we have so many forwards.

Why would Melo waive his no trade clause to play here to begin with ?

He might not, but New York was a bigger mess than LA until PJ was booted.

    *Andre Roberson -4

    Middle of the Pack

    Averaging 4.3M/season (good deals)

(People overpaid like crazy for these players last year. These are players I’d consider on MLE-type deals, 5-8M per season.)
    LUOL DENG -6
    Ian Clark -6
Justin Holiday -6 Signs 2 year, $9M deal with CHI (age 28)
Jodie Meeks -7 (Signs two-year, 6.7m deal with Washington) age 29Reggie Bullock -9 (becomes UFA)

    POST ASB BRANDON INGRAM -12*

    *Ron Baker -15
    Brandon Rush -15
    Alex Toupane -15
    James Young -16

    Two SDs Down
    These are Vet Min Players
    BRANDON INGRAM -18

    Forwards
    Three SDs Up

Paul Millsap +13 Signs three-year $30M deal with Denver (age 32)
Two SDs UpAveraging ~7M/season (these are incredible deals, in my view)
Suggested Porter is getting max. The other gents could go in search of a ring. If not, they could be looking at solid paydays. At 30, Johnson could see an incredible deal, approaching 20M per season.
    *Otto Porter Jr. +8
    David West +8 Signs a one-year, $2.3M contract with GSW (age 36)
Amir Johnson +7 Signs one year, $11M deal with Philly (age 30)

    One SD Up

    Averaging 14M/year
There are some excellent players here. Players better suited to SF earned a good deal more money than those who were more PFs last season in this range. If that continues, Johnson, Beasley, Gibson, and Williams could all see huge salaries – in the 15-18M range. The Lakers could add a quality player in Splitter if they want an upgrade on defense. That’s precisely what I’d try to do if I were LA – look at a two year, $19M deal for Tiago.
    James Johnson +4
    Michael Beasley +3
    Taj Gibson +3 Signs a two-year, 28M contract with Minnesota (age 32)
    *Alan Williams +2 (becomes RFA)
    Tiago Splitter +2
    *Nikola Mirotic +2
    Zach Randolph +1
    Brandon Bass 0

    Middle of the Pack
Averaging 10.5M/season Note that Randle is in this group, meaning the Lakers are already in decent shape with their current starter. If he continues to improve with age, he could jump into the next higher group by next season, but there are good options available that offer different skillsets – like Ilyasova for shooting, Tucker for defense.
*Joe Ingles -1 Signs four year, $52M deal (age 29)
    Ersan Ilyasova -1
    JULIUS RANDLE -2
PJ Tucker -2 Signs four year, $32M deal with HOU (age 32)*JaMychal Green -2
    Christian Wood -4
    Jonas Jerebko -5
    Kris Humphries -6
    Thomas Robinson -6
    *Bojan Bogdanovic -6
    Udonis Haslem -6
    Alex Poythress -6
    Dante Cunningham -7
    Patrick Patterson -7

One SD DownIf you’re signing one of these players, it’s either for depth or you’re speculating. I steer clear of Green and Metta like the plague. Motiejunas is the only one in the group that offers a good skill – his defense.
    James McAdoo -9 (becomes UFA)
    Donatas Motiejunas -9
    Omri Casspi -9
    Metta -9
    Luke Babbitt -10
    Adreian Payne -10
    Jeff Green -12

    Two SDs Down
These are end of the bench players, but Troy Williams isn’t a bad prospect.

    *Troy Williams -13
    Derrick Williams -16
    Damjan Rudez -17 (UFA)

    Center-Eligible
Ibaka will be paid as either the best aging Center-eligible player in the crop or as one of the top five Forwards. He’s going to get a max or near max deal.

    Two SD Up

    Average 22M
Serge Ibaka +9 Signs 3 year, 65M contract (age 27)

One SD UpWho’d have imagined this? Olynyk is in line for a max deal. He’s right where Dwight Howard was last year – but five years younger. Zaza was at +5 last year, and he’s been even better slotted into a good team. Even if he falls off a bit, he’s an above average center and a good candidate for a short, high-paying deal or a ring chase. Noel is my favorite among the Center prospects, and both he and Plumlee could be in for massive paydays. Their deals should probably start at around 15M.
    *Kelly Olynyk +8
    Zaza Pachulia +7
    *Nerlens Noel +6
    *Mason Plumlee +5

Middle of the Pack - averaging $6M per season
Some good, quality vets here. The Lakers could do worse than to invite back Hibbert, but McGee might be a cheaper option and a better fit. Nene continues to be excellent despite his age; he was at only +1 last season, and he found a good role on a good team.

    Dewayne Dedmon +4
    Nene Hilario +3 – 3 years, $11M with Denver (age 34)
    *Alex Len +2
    Aron Baynes FC +2
    Mike Muscala +1
    Nick Collison +1
    Roy Hibbert +1
    Marreese Speights +1
    JaVale McGee +1
Cristiano Felicio 0 – signs four year, $32M deal (age 24)

    One SD Down
Center is pretty deep. The Lakers have three just below average bigs. Zubac is likely to improve a good deal next season. He could be into the low average range by next season’s close. Mozgov was at -2 last season, meaning he actually played slightly better this season. Let that sink in.

    Jeff Withey -1
TARIK BLACK -1 (one of the better positional defenders)
Bogut C -1 (still top 5 defender in the NBA over the last three seasons)
    Joel Anthony -3
    IVICA ZUBAC -4

    Two SD Down
Probably not worth a contract. Center is deep.

    Walter Tavares -7
    Lavoy Allen FC -7

    Four SD Down (Ouch)
    Again. Ouch.

*Joffrey Lauvergne -12 (becomes RFA for some reason)

    Dudes I need to add:
Danilo Gallinari F - becomes UFA
Pau Gasol C - becomes UFA
Jordan Hill FC - waived, becomes UFA
David Lee FC - become UFA
Alex Len C - becomes RFA
Kyle Lowry G - becomes RFA Signs 3 year, $100M deal with TOR (age 31)
Luc Mbah a Moute F - becomes UFA
KJ McDaniels GF - becomes UFA
Ben McLemore G - becomes UFA
CJ Miles FG - becomes UFA
    Willie Reed - becomes UFA
Ramon Sessions G - becomes UFA
Nick Young GF - becomes UFA
Blake Griffin F - becomes UFA, signs big contract.
Wayne Selden SG – 22 – becomes UFA, signs 2 year deal with Memphis for $2.9M

The market for Waiters does seem to be somewhere between 9-13M per season, for what it's worth. He's probably not a better player than Patty Mills, who got 12.5. But he's probably better than Galloway.

I wouldn't be surprised if magic/rob are just lurking n waiting for someone to offer them an expiring contract or non guaranteed to free up space with an asset attach.....feel like this team bout to be the bk nets and will be giving up a top 3 pick next draft.

I don't understand how those two thoughts connect really. If that's what the Lakers are hoping for, it's a good plan. If we could net a 1st in next year's draft along with an asset, why wouldn't we want to do that?

Our record... well it sort of sucks because the West is going to be so much stronger this year. Nuggets improved, Wolves improved, I think Houston improved. The good news is the Clippers got worse, the Blazers haven't moved, and Phoenix still stinks. The Kings are going to struggle. We have a great shot at not being the worst team in the West. So no we're not the Nets, but yes we're likely to give up a lottery pick to Philadelphia this season.
