I really like that Jimmy Butler reminder... Now Chicago has already said they'll max Butler if they feel they have a contender. That was before Rose's injury though. Do they still feel that way? I don't know. My two favorite scenarios now:

    1. Draft Okafor/Towns, sign Butler.

    2. Draft Winslow/Johnson, sign Monroe.

    Butler/Monroe's max- 16.85 million

To play #1 out a little bit:

    1. Draft Okafor or Towns, find a way to draft Hollis-Jefferson.
    2. Sign Butler to a max extension. Chicago will have to figure out if they want to match or rebuild. If they match, that's fine. We'll have Hollis-Jefferson.
    3. If Middelton hasn't signed yet, do the same thing for him. If he HAS signed, throw a decent contract at Wes Matthews.
    4. Use the remaining money to fill out the bench. Get rid of Sacre. Keep Davis, Ellington, and maaaaybe Lin (replace him with Mo Williams maybe).

    Clarkson/Williams
    Bryant/Ellington/Brown
    Butler/Young/Hollis-Jefferson
    Randle/Black/Kelly
    Okafor/Davis

Whoa mama. If you want to replace Butler with Middelton, I ain't mad at you. If Butler and Middelton don't work out and we get Wes Matthews in a few months that's fine too.

If we got Butler and Okafor over the summer I would probably have a heart attack from excitement. Talk about instantly turning the team completely around.

^ That would be the perfect offseason. Even Okafor and Middleton would be amazing.

If a team has smart management, they'd want to get something in return. For example, if Chicago knows the Lakers offered a Max to Butler, they'll make the Lakers wait until they give Jimmy an offer thus allowing not time to go after other FA's because we're waiting on the impending decision on the Bulls during FA and/or demand something of value for Butler to trade him and his BIRD rights.

You're not getting Butler without giving up the pick. Chicago isn't stupid and they'll make sure they get something for Butler on his way out the door...

No, we're not. However, we're in a unique position. We trade our pick for an established, we keep our pick make the selection, and have a hybrid model adopting an approach of implementing our rookies and going through Free Agency to add to our existing core nice young talent we're adding...

^Just to clarify, we could take any number of approaches, but we need to see forward progression next year or at least create an atmosphere where we are more competitive than the last 2 seasons...

I only agree with this statement if the lakers keep their pick this year. if they lose it, the smart move is mega tank next year.

I can't endure another season of this, and I highly doubt Jeanie, Mitch, and or Jim would agree with tanking for another season. I just don't see that happening. Let's just pray we keep this pick and everyone will be happy...

If Clarkson continues to develop, Randle is back at full strength and is as good as we think he might be, and Kobe comes back at full strength, I'm not sure we could mega tank. Clarkson/Randle/Kobe/Swaggy might be enough to win us enough games to keep us out of tanktasticness.

Yeah, I agree. That team is not bad enough to tank.

oh, I'm tanked out, too--especially since the lakers totally suck at it. but if you finish with the 4th worst record in the league, have no high picks and don't pick up a superstar in FA (not happening), you're not making any leaps. best hope is to be even worse next year.

No way we tank again. Next season the pick is Top 3 protected. We're not doing this again and we're certainly not doing even more tanking than this.

^He's referring to only doing it if we lose the pick this year; in that scenario, our pick would not have a protection on it. I still wouldn't want to do it under any circumstances next season...
