^^ This. I don't care about Kevin Love. Let's lock down a starting SF, grab a vet PG who doesn't break the bank, keep Davis at a decent price, and maybe hold on to Sir Duke.
I'm good with all of that, except TBlack fills the Davis slot for a lot less freeing up more cap for that vet PG who is going to cost more than the minimum. Unless you want to roll with Price behind Clarkson. I'd much rather have a decent shooter like Mo.
Defense wins championships but if I have no defense, I would rather have at least offense. RIght now we have neither and beggars can't be choosers.
i'll repeat my refrain: just get some pieces you believe can and will contribute as lakers in the coming years. time to start winning a few more games, re-building a culture of success. one-year deals to retreads and eating the contracts of rental players for low draft picks isn't going to help.
Pretty much how I felt all year and how I'm feeling now. If we get our #2 pick and feel he's the kind of kid who can contribute right away, go ahead and grab two of the 10 million dollar guys, but it's unlikely we'll go into next season dependent on two rookies and a sophomore. I see the Lakers going after big fish just for that reason alone. We have the luxury of the long-term rebuild now with three young assets, but we still want to be competitive asap. A guy like Love or Aldridge or Gasol (not that we'll get any of them) would help make us competitive now and bring along the young guys on a slower pace.
Even setting playoffs aside (I think Lakers want to contend for PO's next year), Mitch knows it is dangerous to have too many young guys and not enough vets. Too much pressure and responsibility too early and guys learn bad habits, or become overwhelmed. Vets help ease the rooks in, and take the pressure off and speed their development. It also makes the team more competitive, so the young guys learn how to win, which not only spurs growth and confidence, but makes the team more attractive to free agents (a free agent can see himself taking a rising forty win team to fifty wins and beyond far easier than dragging a twenty win team to fifty). And the Lakers know they not only have three years of cap room, but also a likely amnesty in 2017, so age risk becomes a question of having to spend extra money (the wealth of the Lakers being an advantage here), not a long term cap issue.
There is supposedly an amnesty coming? I haven't heard that'll be instituted in the new CBA. Are you just going off of the last two having an amnesty provision?
I agree with all this except the contract eating for picks. We will still need picks moving forward under this new CBA. Free picks for contracts is just one more tool in Mitch's toolbox. The Lin thing was a good move for us. It was possible that Lin could have developed into our long term solution at the #1 and it was worth it to see if he would. That #27 pick is now a nice asset going into this draft.
You won't get offense either. I don't think either guy has played a full season in years. Beggars can't be choosers but that doesn't mean they should be desperate either. Committing to those guys for years could completely derail where this team is headed. Wait one more year and do the rebuild right
Who said these guys have/want to commit for years? These stars are well aware of the impending TV deal and the implications on the cap space so they could easily settle on a 1 year /player option deal to eventually get a much more lucrative offer next year.
Idk why some people want love when we have randle why give the max to him when we have randle at a fraction of the price Top priority should be a big we can build around (okafor/towns) And a defensive sf like carroll. And maybe a pg to share time with clarkson while he keeps developing Love has become injury prone and has regressed since he got traded. Top priority should be drafting a big signing a sf and wait for 2016 and make a splash free agent signing but we must be smart and have a good core to entice the free agents to sign here long term Just my .02
There's nothing ever wrong with TOO much talent. I'd rather have too much talent than have another 2015 year. Worst comes to worst, Randle slides to the 3 or comes off the bench. I mean, the kid still hasn't put in a full season yet, what makes you think he even starts? There's not guarantee we can just go after what we want. And if a player as talented as Love or an Aldridge comes knocking at your door, when a guy like Carroll is probably shopping for a max in NY or something, you go for it. Again, it's not a stretch for some of these star players to come on 1 year or player option deal to test the waters and resign for a bigger deal in 2016 when the TV comes through.
Id take aldridge before i even take a look at love. I dont see carroll getting the max. If he does more power to him but if he came to us on a 3-4 yr deal 8-10mil per id do it in a heartbeat. Im just not so inclined to give love a max especially after he crapped out in the east with lebron of all people. My hope is we have a nice young core that will be appealing to FA next year
Carroll is getting AT LEAST 14M, and that will be a steal when the new 2016 Cap takes effect. I would only personally take Love on a 1 year or 1+Player option type deal, to prove himself. Then he can get a max deal in 2016. We will have a nice young core next year, but we also NEED vets to help teach these youngn's the ropes. San Antonio is a very good example of always having a good mix of vets and new bloods.
