So we have 23 million in cap space. Another team can trade us up to 23 million for nothing. In return they get something meaningless or small. Last year we took Lin into our cap space along with two picks for just the rights to some 2nd round pick we had. We can do that right now for Hibbert. He'd cost us roughly 18 million because he's got a 15% trade kicker. It'd be essentially the same as us signing a one-year max contract to guy like Jordan or Aldridge in terms of salary for us.

Precisely. It's a lot like Lin in the idea that he fits a need and he's a low-risk and high-reward option. He could reclaim his All-Star form or he could just be a solid guy and he expires. Then, although I hate the idea of doing this again, we'd have 3 max contract slots available to sign guys next summer and could.... *gulp* make a big splash... Or we could re-sign him for a reasonable salary and keep him around and move forward with two max slots.

Lakers need a starting Center and back up Center. Just call Kevin Garnett and JaVale McGee and call it a day.

That might work. I would love to get KJ McDaniels as a competent backup, but Caron makes some sense. Does he have much left in those legs? Last year with Detroit he played 20 minutes a game and averaged 6/2.5/1 points, rebounds, and assists... Still able to shoot pretty well though from outside. I mean that'd make some sense as a stopgap.

    Clarkson/Russell
    Kobe/Brown
    Butler/Young/Brown
    Randle/Kelly/Nance
    Hibbert/Black/Sacre

That's not terrible. I still would like some more depth up top though. Maybe you have to bring back Price.

Garnett is available? What...? He stays in Minny tutor Towns and Karlito. McGee could be a good backup.

Why wouldn't Kosta come here? If we can't pull off a trade we've got up to a max offer to give him. :D :D :D

A starting spot and potentially big money that we need to spend? I think he'd jump at that offer.

We'd have roughly 4 million after his trade kicker assuming we give no salary back to Indiana. If we trade say Kelly or Sacre or Young or all three, we could have up 10 million to spend.

According to Pincus, Hibbert's trade kicker is 15% and would give him roughly an 18 million contract for next season, just like signing a max deal to guys like Aldridge and Jordan for one season

Thanks @therealdeal. I think I for it. So essentially as long as we have open cap space we don't have to send anyone back. But if not then players would have to go back to make the salaries match.

I can dig this, definately worth the risk factors that's for sure. At this point you have nothing to lose. 3 max contracts. Plus a season of development for the young guns, hopefully makes us an attractive option for next years FA class.

If McDaniels is there for the taking...yes. Let's stick with the youth movement. If the m.o. is for these 1st tier free agents this upcoming season to notice that the Lakers have promise...then we should give them something to look at. I can deal with another season of nothing if not we are at least able to fight and won't be pushovers on the floor. Health willing that is... Field a good product...the buyers will show interest. As discussed, that has been our sticking point in this free agency this summer.

    That's my understanding.

Ben Rosales at SBNation seems to think we could actually GET assets in return for taking on Hibbert, but I'm not sure that's the case this time... If it is, then sweet! We might be able to get a pick AND Hibbert. Maybe even one of their prospects and Hibbert. I'm not sure that's the case, but he seems sold on that.

Because as we've shown with our previous two targets, we'll wait on Roy probably for 2 weeks. Everyone will be signed by then. We don't multi task. Plus with several teams with cash to throw around, I have no faith in our ability to close. Other teams will make a significantly better pitch.

I'm not a fan of Hibbert, but we have zero to lose right now and it's a one year rental, so whatever. He's an expensive rental, but he's pretty much one of the only moves we could make right now that I can see. We already suck, he's a legit C with 6 fouls to give, so whatever.

A change of scenery may help Hibbert, but he'll be in LA. The Lakers and their fans demand a lot out of their players.

Will Hibbert respond to that well? Also, who are we trading for him?
