Currently Ranked 14th in the NBA in Double Doubles. Not bad for a rookie http://espn.go.com/nba/statistics/player/_/stat/double-doubles What's funny too, if you look at 1-15 and the MPG they are playing and then look at Randle at 27.7 its just makes it more impressive.
^Yeah, really amazing numbers as a first year, 28 minutes a game player. Kind of ridiculous to be averaging a double double per.
His Per36 rebounding is at 13.1 rebounds per game. That'd be good for 3rd in the NBA behind only DeAndre Jordan and Andre Drummond, two guys who are at least 6'11" and play Center. In fact Julius is tied right now for 10th in the NBA in rebounds per game. EVERY name ahead of him is at least 6'10" or taller and they play C or PF/C.
I sort of feel the same way. I hate to be the guy that's down on randle but what does the advance stats show? I feel like his numbers are some what empty. That even though his numbers may be good, his impact isn't great.
Just from the eyeball test, he seems to get rebounds where no other Laker is in the vicinity quite often. Like I said, that's just me watching more games of this crappy team that I should, but I've seen a lot of boards where he seems to come from nowhere and jump up between two or three opposing players. I think Lou Williams is an empty stat player. Randle is impactful from my vantage point.
I don't understand how Randle came be perceived as an empty stats guy. The man has CLEARLY improved as the season has gone on in regards to playing more under control, finishing with the off hand, and reading defenses. How is that empty production? His impact is as high as anyone else especially with his great work on the glass.
Is there a stat based on rebounding opportunity ? Because since we are not good on defense, I guess there's less rebounding opportunity for Randle. That'd make his rebounding average even more impressive
there's rebounding rate, which includes opportunity in the denominator: http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/hollinger/statistics/_/sort/reboundRate
Close game, within 3 points. Or performing when it matters most! the theory of empty stats, it's TOAST!
well, i'm not on the empty stats side of the argument, but that list of people, to me, is guys on teams with other guys who you expect to be shooting. in other words, if myles turner (and not paul george) or randle (and not kobe, clarkson, or even russell) is shooting the ball in crunch time, the defense probably stopped the first option. still, it's something to be converting when you get the chance--but that stat doesn't mean what folks want it to mean, imo. all that said, the times i've seen the various rebounding stats i've felt encouraged about randle. i agree that sometimes watching him, it seems like he's grabbing boards when the offense has already retreated, and he's beating nick young to the ball. but if that were true, the team wouldn't rebound better with him on the floor.
It means exactly what you said though and that by itself is a good sign. Just the fact that he converts open looks in clutch situations is great by itself. I don't need him to be creating the look. That's what Russell and Clarkson are for. If he's supposed to be the "Draymond" of the group or the "Lamar" of the group, then that ^^ stat is pretty important to that development. I also think he has the talent and ability to be a guy who can create when the occasion calls for it. I'd like to know how many of those 27 shots he's created himself. It's probably not a ton, but more than we'd expect still.
i'll be shocked if he's ever a 25ppg scorer. i'll be shocked at 20, even. i wouldn't be shocked at 16/10 for several years, though. if that comes with improved defense...yippee!
I think if it's 20/10 then there's something wrong with the makeup of the team. I'd honestly prefer 16/12 with 3-4 assists, one steal, and one block a game. All-around contributions, but makes his bread and butter on the glass.
Probably right at the 25 point level, although with his right hand making serious strides...... if he starts knocking down his Js look the Hell out. This kid with his "kid" muscles (I remember the Top Gun volleyball scene Big Man Muscles at 25-27 years of age discussion several years ago at Clublakers talking about Bynum ) ..... has a LOT of room to grow. Charles Barkley in a similar but yet different kind of way. But questioning whether he can hit 20 points per game ..... nyeh ... I wouldn't go there.
