He's been really consistent now for a long stretch. More often than not it's a double double. And also more often than not he's at 50% shooting like tonight. Sometimes he'll dip to 45% but that's about it for some time now. On the season he's averaging a double double at 11.5 points and 10 boards a game plus 1.5 assists. He's got rock solid numbers for this being his first year.
I don't know if it's because DLO's play has been picking up lately, but I'm becoming little by little unimpressed with Randle's game; it's very unrefined and his on court awareness is terrible. There is this particular thing that bugs me the most and I saw it in today's game a few times: he rebounded the ball, if he didn't pass it to a guard right away, he PUT HIS HEAD DOWN and started dribbling; I think a player should keep his head up and look up the court but that's just me. If he doesn't expand his game next season, he's not corner stone material.
That's okay. We have him under contract for another season after that at a very reasonable price (team option?) and then we can extend a QO and make him an RFA. We got dis.
Do people expect every player to be perfect? Every one of our young kids have their flaws. All of them are making mistakes. All of them are getting better, but yet they're still there as expected. They all need to continue to progress. The dude is averaging a double double on the season and his efficiency has gone up as the season has worn on. He's a monster on the boards and he is playing more under control now and not as much of a black hole as before. Even if he's not a cornerstone it's not the end of the world.
Our cornerstone is Russell, Clarkson, Julius, and Nance Jr. We have 4 stones for 4 corners. Each one of them has shown improvement and are vital to taking us to the next level.
You guys are all wrong. Byron is the packed in dirt upon which the foundation has been set. He's grittier than all you guys combined!
More like cheap spackle... Young man just has to keep working. On topic: Randle needs to work a bit on his court awareness. He had a couple of ill-timed passes that became turnovers.
I'd like him to recognize open passes faster. He had that one Magic-esque pass in Summer League as a rookie and I've yet to see him recognize a pass that well since. Where did that vision go? Was it a one-time deal and then he got blinders attached? There's times teammates are open and he either doesn't want to chance a pass or is too late to recognize it. Sometimes it feels like he won't make certain passes because that's not what the play is called for even if it would result in an open lok. I'd like him to be more fluid.
Randle is learning how to adjust to how defenses are playing him and where or when teammates will be open. It will come in time as he gets really used to NBA speed. This is essentially his rookie season. Let the game come to him. In its own way, Scott's method of pacing them as he and the other kids process what is going out there then adjust when they are given the time. I don't like how he handles it by discussing with the media but it does have some benefits. Can't believe I just defended the guy some...
