How Mitch waved his wand with the Nance selection, from this new Kupchak speaks and covers for Clown Boron's handling of the young guys.

Larry's not even a 100% by the book back from his ACL tear yet according to everyone. Going to get even more athletic and mobile, perhaps. :MitchWand:

Mitch Kupchak praises Julius Randle, D'Angelo Russell, and Larry Nance, Jr., details dynamic with Byron Scott
    By Harrison Faigen

As the second overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft, D'Angelo Russell was the Lakers' most highly touted rookie heading into the season, but he was not their only first round pick. The front office shocked almost everyone when they selected Larry Nance, Jr. with the 27th overall pick, and Kupchak detailed how he first became aware of the springy forward:

"My son was recruited by Wyoming, and he's now at UCSB, but we visited Wyoming, and coach Shyatt at Wyoming kept mentioning to me 'you know we have Larry Nance's son here who had an ACL tear. You know Mitch, I think he has a really good chance to be a player in your league and you should really take a look at him," recalled Kupchak.

"Now a lot of coaches say that to me and to our staff, and so you've got to take it with a grain of salt, but [Nance, Jr.] was in Chicago for the pre-draft camp, he was in our board, and we did bring him in regardless of what the people at Wyoming told me. We felt he was going to get better and better," said Kupchack, "We knew he had an ACL tear that wasn't completely healed, so we knew that even what we saw was going to get better and better."

Kupchak and the front office's prediction is looking more accurate by the game, with Nance, Jr. catching fire from midrange and taking a stronger hold on his starting spot by the game, but even Kupchak was surprised by how quickly Nance, Jr. has adapted to the league.

"Now nobody can predict that a player drafted at that place in the draft is going to make an impact this quickly, so while I'd love to say we have a crystal ball and we're that good at what we do, but there is always a degree of luck in this thing," Kupchak told McGee. "He's fit right in, he's been unselfish, he's learning to take a shot when he's open, you know sometimes he hesitates because he doesn't want to take a shot and upset a veteran, but you can't do that in this league."

Great story on how Larry nearly quit basketball. Really speaks to his level of character and dedication to the game to be able to endure a severe illness like that. He's becoming one of my favorite Lakers. It's easy to root for a guy like Larry because nobody thought he should've been picked where he was. Nobody thought he'd make such an impact so soon. Just love the way he plays the game. His energy, toughness, overall effort defensively, basketball IQ, selfless player. and he's become more aggressive offensively. Jump shot is much improved. Doesn't get out of character. Is a ball mover. Excellent screen setter. Good roll man. Between him, Jordan, and Julius we have some ridiculous athleticism on this roster now.

I'm happy with him now but would be ecstatic if he develops into a SF.

Should give him & Randle a look together in the 4/5 spot interchangeably.

Nance or Randle can't play the 3

Larry is just such a talented rebounder. Has a great nose for the ball and is always hustling. Was on full display once again tonight.

Don't be so sure about with some match ups Nance not being able to do well at the 3. He's even handling the ball a little in the open court tonight. He looks more polished by the game. Seems as his confidence grows more and more of his game and offense are surfacing. He's quick as well on defense. I'd definitely like to see some quarters with Randle at 4 and Nance at 3. Better than either I think at 5. According to Serena or some other Lakers beat writer yesterday Boron is thinking about taking a look at that too.

Nance is going to play his way into being a 3/4 I think.

I love this kid. Solid play all the time and I love the way his defense is coming along.

    Draymond Green of our future.

Another GREAT pick by the FO. You have to give them that: they have been drafting superbly. This is why I'm loathe to throw the baby out with the bathwater. Their coaching picks have been DISGUSTINGLY horrible. Why can't they pick a good coach like they do players in the draft? Clarkson was a steal, Randle was excellent, Russell was an inspired pick and is paying off, and Nance looks like another total steal. Now do the right thing and get them all a good coach who can develop them!!

So true. Couldn't agree more. Russell was an inspired pick. Great choice of words. We need to make an inspired choice for a head coach. That's for sure. On topic, Nance has been great. That's what 4 years of playing collegiate ball will get you and fits our pattern with picks in the lower round. Players with lower ceilings but a higher floor to produce.

Nance is fun to watch. I'm not even sure of his weight but he just looks like a solid dude out there and he's one of those athletes that has a grace and explosiveness to him.
