He's a good one on one defender but his size is a real.limitation as he doesn't have the length to be a good help defender, guys can jump over him, and he is a terrible rebounder

Really limits how much he can help the team defense despite his individual D being solid

Gabe, DK, Koloko, and Bronny finished with a negative +/-. Three of those played garage time, one started. He at least was better at moving the ball tonight.

For comp sake: Smart was a game high +24

When LeBron returns he’ll be DNP/CD hopefully, looks like it is locked rotation is why Smart is not starting

I actually thought Gabe was quite good tonight, played good POA defence, especially on Antman. Moved the ball with energy, cut well and was always an option with early transition.

Not everyone can be a chief, we need some villagers in the team and Gabe is a good one.

Nah he's not a starter and need to be replaced by Vando because the starters are just too small with him on it. The Wolves just destroyed the Lakers in offensive rebounding in the 1st half

I agree that Vando should start over Gabe due to size, but Vincent did a great job against Antman last night.
We were getting destroyed on the boards in the first half and they scored 18 second chance points because of it.
Vando would have reduced this dramatically.

Starting Smart over Gabe is the answer. In both games so far, in either the 1Q or 3Q, Vincent+starters has put us in a big hole, and then when Smart comes in and replaces him, the team has gone up. It's a gigantic difference. 14 point turnaround in the 1Q this game (-9 w Vincent+starters, then +5 w Smart), and a 22 point turnaround in the 3Q of Game 1 (-16 w Vincent+starters, then +6 w Smart).

Yeah Gabe didn't play bad either he hit some good shots

But the lack of size is just a big problem for this team. As a POA defender ANT just elevated over him. And the lack of boards along with Rui is just bad for your defense. Ayton can only cover so much of that up

Only issue with starting him I think you need to have Smart with AR when Luka sits. AR with Gabe is awful in that scenario so they might not pull the trigger and Smart is old too so got to watch his minutes

    Lebron fixes this pretty easily?

Yes, Smart is better with AR, but Vincent can hold his own against bench units. Against starters, not so much. In last night's game, Vincent/Reaves went +1, while Smart/Reaves went +5. Better to let this happen than let Vincent tank the starters down -9 or -16.

    2Q
    12:00-6:34 Vincent/Reaves/LaRavia/Rui/Ayton 5:26 +1
    3Q
    3:58-0:00 Smart/Reaves/LaRavia/Rui/Vando 3:58 +5

    -

    In Game 1, Vincent/Reaves went +0 and -2, while Smart/Reaves went +0 and +0.

    Game 1
    1Q
    1:54-0:00 Smart/Reaves/LaRavia/Vando/Hayes 1:54 +0
    2Q
    12:00-8:51 Vincent/Reaves/LaRavia/Vando/Hayes 3:09 +0
    4Q
    9:48-8:41 Smart/Reaves/LaRavia/Rui/Hayes 1:07 +0
    8:41-7:50 Vincent/Reaves/LaRavia/Rui/Hayes 0:51 -2

    -

Imo the rotation should probably be something like

    1Q/3Q
    6 Smart/Reaves/Luka
    3 Vincent/Luka
    3 Vincent/Reaves

    2Q/4Q
    3 Vincent/Reaves
    3 Vincent/Luka
    6 Smart/Reaves/Luka

No he’s the Devil and can’t wait til he’s gone …. seems the attitude of many here.

But yes of course we will be much stronger when he plays.

We were getting beat on offensive rebounds but there was also some lackluster effort to box out in that first quarter. I also think Ayton improved on the boards in the second half tremendously. I wouldn’t really put that at Gabe’s feet.

I have no issues with Smart starting, but I do think keeping him healthy is importsnt and so I think Gabe continues to start until LeBron’s back at which point I’d consider replacing both Gabe and Rui with Smart and Lebron.

Really didn't like what I saw from Gabe tonight. When ball pressured he tried to pull a steph move and shot a terrible 3 which had as much chance as me shooting an NBA 3 in the game.

He needs to go - real weak link in the roster. Down both Luka and Lebron he's not even a dependable PG in terms of getting the team into actions

Almost a Snell game before the injury.

Ankle injury. Let me guess...2 weeks away?

    Update:

    Doesn't sound promising

well, this season has started pretty poorly in this regard. i know gabe's been giving us zilch, but that's now the third member of the presumptive top-8 out for a stretch. not great, bob.

and one thing that's important about gabe is that he's not bronny. i just don't think you can survive long with bronny on the floor right now. and i don't like the idea of ramping up smart's minutes, either, as i feel like it results in him getting injured.

    gabe's a minutes-eater in the regular season.

16 down to 4 is so pathetic. Esp w 26 minutes. We still need him for depth, so hopefully he's healthy or recovers quickly. But he needs to go to the bench and be able to play against bench players, not starters. As shorthanded as we are, I think we need to start Smart/Reaves/Vando/Rui/Ayton. That unit went +7 in the 4th Q last night.
