Max has starting PG potential he has the build of a penny w maybe less hops has the handle vision needs more quickness he can be our big pg of the future
I think the point is more Max value vs those 3 guys as they have similar contracts. I agree with the point, I expect Max to provide similar value to those guys on the court. He has to be a top8 man in the roster to justify this bet. I think he can do it
i think in the current nba, 8 per is fringe top-8 money. also worth noting that all three of those guys are wings who are 5-6 years older and/or took several years to catch on. the idea for us is to have one of those guys under contract already going forward rather than having to use an exception to bring one in. i think people expected way too much out of 19 and 20 year old max. reaves was 23 when he was drafted. it's not the same. nickeil alexander walker flamed out twice before finding a role at age 25. max (and jhs) is a developmental project, imo. i know the team says things like they expect them to be part of the rotation, but i think that's partly just to keep morale up. him not being a rotation player now doesn't mean he won't be or that this contract will be a dumb one.
If Max can improve his jumper, and add a little strength, he could get some burn this season. Maybe make a great understudy for Klay.
Thing is, he's top 8 in contracts. And we have 3 spots already with guys that won't count. Outside our top 8, we need 2 backup bigs. Then it's either a wing or a Gabe insurance. The other guy is Knecht. So there's really not many options, even if we do trades, Max should be a rotation player this year. But agree there's still many open things about our roster. Let's see in a couple weeks how it looks like and then understand Max role
I don't think you "become" a PG at this stage. You need someone with those instincts already IMHO. That is a tough transition.
Max is going to surprise you and I will admit, as good as you are with evaluations I'm surprised you aren't higher on Max.
Bingo. Same reason it took so long for most to get on board with AR. They will be changing their tune soon and acting like they knew it all the time....lol.
Unfortunately he’s just not good. He can’t shoot under pressure. Can’t shoot when he gets space. He’s too weak on defense to guard anyone of significance. He’s a 11-12 roster spot on a good team.
Weird the polarization with Max. He's a project. I don't think prospects typically get the contract he just did but he's with the Lakers so maybe they're seeing stuff that we dont I can see a path where he does become a solid rotation piece but a lot of red flags with him as well. I don't get the confident predictions each way with him. I also frankly don't get the Ham hate. Ham gave him a. Lot of chances and Max f***ed up a lot of those chances.
I think the narrative was, that we were supposed to keep letting him f*** up, and play him anyway. Supposedly the team would be better for it, eventually.
By f up, I'm assuming you mean make mistakes like every young developing player does. Sitting everyone that made mistakes you would soon have an empty court and you could tell everyone you told them so...lol Despite what some think, teams do get better as players develop. Novel concept, I know. Eventually....lol.
Making mistakes is f***ing up. Some are afforded more mistakes than others, it's like that on every team.
Not to derail this too much, but my all time favorite SNL sketch. I've watched all the Celeb Jeopardy hundreds of times during those early internet days. FAMOUS FLICKS...Ursula Andress. "I don't remember how it ends but your mother's a *****" "BUCK FUTTER" Man, it didn't get any better. Back on topic: $8m could be a deal or could be a lot for Max. We don't know thanks to dear ole' Darv. Buha was hearing $6m-$8m before it was done, so that is unfortunate that we had to pay the higher rate and give out another PO, Rob's kryptonite. I like him and his game, but he's being paid to be our backup SG and be relied upon in the rotation. We'll see if he's ready for that role.
I agree I think we slightly overpaid him. This could end up being another THT situation where we end up giving up on him and dumping him for an old vet and we'll all hate the trade. We'll overvalue him until he's sold off for bits and pieces. Just the way it's been. Is he going to get PT next year? Not completely sold that he will...will also depend on if our own rookie KNECHT can outplay him...we'll see. I love Christie but I also think that he's gonna have to show A LOT very quickly to earn that $8M and he's either gonna be a BARGAIN or he's going to be overpaid and ppl gonna look at him differnetly then
