going through the archives today and this cracked me up - I remember watching that press conference

DLO no longer seems to say crazy things, so it's nice to see him growing up. Hardly recognize this guy without all the ink though. Wow.

Maybe the Lakers coaching staff has what it takes to open his mind, get him to see the possibilities better. If people are scheming to take him out of his game, he needs to see the floor a little better and make the adjustments. If he is being taken out of the game, someone else must be open. If we have a spacing problem because they are laying off of Vando and leaning into DLO, then play another offensive threat who DLO can pass to. If we need more defense, sit DLO and play someone else. There is a team way through all this, where DLO is a valuable piece of the puzzle. He may not be everything, but I believe he can be better than he showed against Denver.

I know we need him on the roster and it made total sense to re-sign him, but man... He seems like just trade bait. This reminds me of the Jabari Parker Bulls contract and Kwame's Warriors contract.

To me, he got a dime and we have the ability to move on. 36 million!!! That is a LOT of money. Someday we are going to see a player, at the peak of his game and a difference maker just up and walk away. Take his money and leave. This guy doesn't ever have to work again if he doesn't want to.

I can never feel sorry for anyone who has made this kind of money. They are set for life.

I agree. I think he can be a lot better than he showed in the WCF. He had a nice breakout in the GSW series. I just feel like Murray was on a mission and was all in on winning it all last season. I felt like Dlo was still more happy to be there than driven to go all the way. Maybe he will be more determined this season. So far he’s just been a little bit lacking in the desire/seriousness department. Reaves has that, Rui has that. Hopefully Dlo grows into it. But if not he’s on a tradeable contract and we have Gabe Vincent now.

D'angelo is going to go down as having one of the most memorable careers in NBA history.
Payed like all-NBA NBA guy to be a trade chip by 3 teams now?

I actually think the notion that he’s just a trade chip is being overstated

Sure it’s nice to know he waived the NTC and so we do have the flexibility of trading him, but the fact that he has a player option still makes it less likely he’d have many suitors

If we trade him, he could opt out from the team acquiring him next summer. AND they wouldn’t have his bird rights so they’d be limited in their ability to retain him unless they had cap space they wanted to use.

So is anybody giving up significant assets for what is potentially just a rental of DLo for a few months?

Only way I’d see a team interested in that is if they don’t actually mind him walking in the summer, that they’d be trading for him as if he was an expiring contract … but then the PO works in the opposite direction. He could just opt in and then you still have him on the books for another year.

So I think trading him is still complicated, and you likely don’t get a significant return for him unless he was more of just a salary matching piece and the real prize was one of our other assets (future FRP, Christie, etc).

So his Bird rights wouldn't travel to his new team? He's pretty much just salary filler then.

Yeah, that’s my understanding. Since he has a 1 year deal (the PO still makes it considered a 1 year deal) if he’s traded his bird rights wouldn’t convey.

That’s the whole reason the implicit NTC comes with these types of contracts in the first place, as the player would be potentially disadvantaged in a trade.

Although to be honest I don’t quite follow why this is. Pretty sure WE still have his bird rights, as we acquired him from his long term deal where he had already accrued bird rights. But for some reason since he signed a new 1 year deal, they wouldn’t transfer to another team anymore?

So yeah, I think he’d only make sense in a trade if the other team only saw him as salary filler and didn’t care one way or another if he walked in free agency or stuck around another year. They’d mainly be interested in such a trade to either offload a longer term contract on us, or if we sweetened the pot by attaching more assets.

Still think that’s a limited scenario where we’d be unlikely to get a great return. So I think at the end of the day, DLo stays through the rest of this year. I don’t want to sell low on him just for the sake of it, it may be hard to replace what he brings to the table

    I think he's definitely a salary filler.
No team is trading FOR him. There's a huge numbers of guards in the league and many with at least a higher ceilings that teams aren't willing to trade. I mean, even Simons who I thing will be an average guard in his career, you wouldn't trade him for Dlo straight up.

So I think his value is that he's an expiring 2 years. If he's traded, it will certainly be for a star, meaning that team is rebuilding at some capacity. Having Dlo for a year or 2 fits that transition so he has value both this year and next year.

I think it's a great contract for us and it's an asset we can use when we lose LeBron for nothing. This is not talked enough but we will never trade him so we will have him walk at some time and have limited cap space to catch a big fish (which nowadays rarely hit FA). So having this type of contracts gives you options moving forward
