Agree with the Lopez falter. This was a complete L when we could have at least gotten something in return for him if they didn’t want to continue with his services. He even wanted to come back!

At that point in time, DLO was still very early in his career and improved after going to the Nets(he became an All Star replacement). He wasn’t close to this level as a Laker. This also allowed the Dubs to get a better return for him.

See my reply above regarding the later trades, plus the snitch devil tag probably was gone by then.

no it didn't, Dlo was struggling when he got to gsw and was a bad fit. When he was used to dump mozgov, was only 2yrs into his career most teams would still value a high pick even if he wasnt developing into a star right away

Dlo was only 2yrs into his career, even with his issues plenty of teams would still see him with high potential, just like Ingram yr 2, wasnt good all the time but still plenty of teams wanted him

He was NEVER going to develop alongside LeBron. He is a high usage player who needs the ball in his hands to be effective. When he went to the Nets, he developed and became an All Star. He was a bad fit in GSW for the same reason he was a bad fit alongside LeBron.

not sure why we're rehashing this here, but the dlo trade definitely annoyed me. however, i could see that we thought we had a path to lebron (i'm sure he'd communicated as much). plus, lopez was a former allstar still not past his prime at a position of need*. the one i really didn't like was nance/clarkson for the corpses of isiah thomas and channing frye plus cleveland's 1st. this just to clear extra space to sign a second superstar past lebron. i didn't like it at the time because i wasn't sure we had a second star in the bag. when it turned out we didn't, the deal looked even worse, as we just sort of wasted the extra cap space.

*btw, part of why i didn't like the russell trade was that i felt we had no intention of keeping lopez (it was for the space). thus, when we a) didn't need the space for a second star and then b) didn't re-sign lopez, i was not happy.

youre missing the pt...it wasnt about keeping Dlo, using him to dump Mozgov was nothing special, even the dumbest gm in the league could do that trade, we could've gotten more than just a salary dump

Okay fine- I can’t argue that point. I won’t argue against the premise that Rob is not amongst the best GM’s in the NBA.

Let’s just all agree that Rob hasn’t been great in asset management :Kobepuking:

starting with the Randle debacle which they just threw him away for nothing

chiming in once again to say that most of the egregious stuff happened with magic involved and basically stopped after magic stopped being involved. some of those deals were attributed to magic at the time, too. the only terrible things that have happened post-magic have been the russ trade and the caruso situation. each of which could very, very easily be attributed to non-rob factors.

but people want a single human as a scapegoat instead of properly pinning it on a flawed system involving many unqualified cooks in a kitchen. rob may be an unqualified cook, but we have no good way of knowing that with how we're run.

and once again, i *think* he's been given greater control of basketball decisions since his extension, so we'll find out soon enough if he's actually the devil.

Yes. The Big that Magic didn't seem to understand - to me - was Zubac. 30 mins/game this year: 10/10/1 with a block: doesn't look like a world-beater, but he's not a dumb player, he makes his FTs (only 68% this year, I see; thought he was better), and he's so damned big I think his presence on D is just something that doesn't show up in the stats. His numbers don't reflect how heavily the Clips rely on PG13/Kawhi/Jackson/Powell/Morris/Wall for offense.

I never understood what Magic didn't see in him that I did. I suspect some ultra-well-schooled-in-talent people (Magic!) think a Big should be more like Kareem on one hand, or Shaq on the other. I wonder what Magic thought the first time he saw Jokic, for example: did he see the greatness? I suspect not.

i think in general and across the league, everyone decided that centers were dead when they really weren't. dantoni ball still hasn't won anything, and most top teams play a big center for at least 20mpg (more than half of the top 8 in the west start a big slow center). hell, watch our two games against charlotte and how much impact mason plumlee had by simply being large and active, despite being slow and generally unskilled. i think people got on a trend that maybe wasn't even a trend. and the theoretical 3 and d centers like bamba haven't panned out yet. enough so that i wonder if the model will be abandoned for a while.

i still think we probably had a team option on that third year. i remember dennis saying something like that deal wasn't offered, and i think that's what he meant (we offered 4/84 but with incentives and a non-guaranteed final year or something).

honestly, i'd have been fine with that. we would have overpaid, but i think it would have stopped the russ trade.

larger point to me there was that the spirit was right: if we didn't sign him to an extension, we risked losing assets for nothing. in the end, we did, and i think it still hurts us.
