oh, much, much better. though none of them are as good a shooters as robinson, but all of them beat him out for spots in the rotation. my big issue is that steve novak was one of the best shooters i've ever seen. and swider reminds me of him in many ways. and most people probably don't even remember steve novak, even though he played less than a decade ago. also remember that i don't actually think of our shooting situation as "sky is falling". and it wouldn't be remedied by a backup pf/sf who can shoot, anyway. our issue is that two of our stars are poor shooters from distance. to me, that can't be fixed by just putting one-dimensional shooters around them. you have to defend and get into transition.
My bold prediction: Steve Novak is Swider’s career floor. Swider’s ceiling is Kyle Korver or Mike Miller.
Good pickup on Novak I think you make good points. Seems you're already buying him Ham's philosophy. He also seems to see that way. Curious to see if we eliminate the problem of spacing with this new system
I think it's harder to be a really elite NBA level shooter too (just for bleeps and giggles assuming he has a shot at that like @TIME with the Big Balls) says above ..... than learning to become serviceably better and quicker physically, just starting his first NBA quality physical training at this point in time with great size.
Theoretically it's possible to be a good defender even when you aren't athletic - I mean look at Joe Ingles.
Look at later career Marc Gasol. Just depends how smart Swider is to learn the great angles to take and tricks of the NBA trade.
This is a different situation. Gasol is a man mountain. He wasn’t ever trying to rotate out to the perimeter. But Joe Ingles did and used anticipation to get there.
also, what joe ingles (and marc gasol) has in spades is hoop iq. would you say you've seen evidence of that from swider?
I did say theoretically. I don’t know Swider’s IQ, I’m not sure if any of us realistically could either.
you mean us or anyone? because i think 4 years of college ball should provide some ability to estimate.
Us forumers. I think his coaches very well could or those who follow college ball intently. But most of the IQ is seen in the first two years of NBA development for me.
i think hoop iq can be developed, but like athleticism, there are limits. jason kidd and luka doncic were basketball savants from their teen years, much like shawn kemp was an obvious athletic freak at an early age. anyway, i'm wasting a lot of time dampening hopes on a guy who doesn't figure prominently into any plans. i'm not sure why. maybe i remember people saying rashard lewis was kuzma's floor when he was a rookie only to have some of the same folks calling for his head when rashard lewis was above his ceiling. that wasn't kuzma's fault, it was outsized fan expectations. steve novak is a healthy bar for swider at this point. mike miller is setting oneself up for bitter, bitter disappointment.
He stays locked and loaded and ready to fire. I like that. 6-9 is still 6-9. He is a spot player but you can plug him in with the bench, or with the big 3 and he won't be shy about letting it rip. If he's on the court, teams are going to respect his shot. Give me more of what he showed last night throughout the preaseason, and he gets some burn this season IMO.
I think Swider gets some minutes as well. Just for his shot alone. Bev, Nunn, Lebron, Swider, AD is defensive enough to work while providing some solid spacing.
